After his father passed away in 1994 James embarked on a quest to find out his story. After visiting the Island of Iwo JIma and talking to countless veterans and family members about their experiences, he decided to write a book about his experiences. The only issue was that no one would publish it. After receiving 27 turndowns from publishes, Flags of Our Fathers became a New York Times Best-seller.
