[See post on tinyways.com to listen to audio]
River of Dirt [MP3]
Marissa Nadler’s “busy mind”, as she puts it, recently released a fourth album. Titled “Little Hells” it continues Marissa’s haunting tradition, layering it with more and more complex music. This comes to show on stage as well, when she at times steps back from the microphone, into the shadows of her instrumental realm. In general this album continues Marissa’s exploration of musical instruments and effects. It seems like the natural next stop for her journey that started from such a vocal place. It’s definitely a fun ride so far.
Marissa performs with Alela Diane (one after the other, not collaborating) throughout her tour.
IMG_6097IMG_6101IMG_6123IMG_6126IMG_6159IMG_6168
Tour dates:
Don’t be fooled by the seemingly ridiculous moniker Monsters of Folk. Thursday night live at Paramount Theatre, Seattle (third show of their U.S. tour), the supergroup featuring M. Ward, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and Bright Eyes‘ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis proved to be real folk monsters, bursting with energy for their nearly 3 hours long show. The show varied from folk to Americana, from rock to country sounds. During the performance the band members would come and leave the stage and change dozens of guitars. MoF kept things dynamic and musically intriguing by joining each other for duos, trios, solo efforts, just as well as for their songs written together as Mosters of Folk. Oberst’s, Ward’s and James’ vocals and guitars blended flawlessly in a variety of styles and rhythms, while the group’s multi-instrumentalist Mogis could play pretty much everything from keybords to mandolin. From up-tempo tracks (”Whole Lotta Loosin’ “) to breezy playful folk tunes (”Goodway”) and Southern vibes (”Man Named Truth”) the Monsters of Folk enchanted the audience.
IMG_5994IMG_5999IMG_6002IMG_6008IMG_6044
Fall Tour Dates

A perfect fit for our period: when autumn leaves and winter comes. Nobody can hang on the mic with such despair like Beth Gibbons. Nobody can make the loneliness of the whiskey haze so desirable and so sweet as Beth. Oh, sweet loneliness.

An unofficial video for Boom Pam’s song (that was mixed by Radio Trip). Guess what they do in the clip? He began his career with a series of cartoons featuring beautiful girls and their far from handsome beaus. His work coined the term “Petty Girls” to describe the carefully airbrushed girls with brilliant smiles and sexy poses. He left Esquire, to be replaced by Alberto Vargas who we will be featuring here soon, and became a freelance commercial artist. His girls soon ended up gracing magazine ads and calendars for such unlikely products as Tung-Sol Radio Tubes and the aptly named, Ridgid Tools.

The exaggerated almost comic nature of these illustrations is extraordinary, especially since they were made with the most serious intention. It’s like a the 40s housewife on acid, a lot of acid. Except being such an eye candy and inspiration for nightmares, it’s a quite extraordinary example of American perception of women at the peak of the cold war.
Via ASIFA.

Mili Presman’s paintings fade into the canvas in a chaotic whirlwind of colors. It’s obvious that her drawing are far from photo-realistic. It seems like she is trying to convince the viewer of the unrealness of the world. However, her drawings also maintain a certain truthfulness in them, they are, after all, loyal to our real and limited world, or at least to the way we perceive it. This comes less in form but more in content. In her constant return to the street, the long forgotten heart of the urban soul, she maintains a strong grip on reality while being anything but real. A fantastic paradox.
Links:
Official website
Via traveling with the ghost.

Since the debut of Mazzy Star in the early 90’s, Hope Sandoval has been a modern icon of psychedelic dream pop. “Trouble”, the fresh single from her upcoming album Through the Devil Softly (2009), features Hope’s hypnotic and soft vocals interwoven with hypnotizing ethereal arrangements. Hope Sandoval’s much anticipated full-length, her first in eight years, will be released via Nettwerk on September 29.

And a small reminder of why we are looking forward for this album so much:

Links:
MySpace profile
Official website

Mostly known as a part of the dream pop duo Azure Ray, Maria Taylor just dropped by with her third solo effort LadyLuck (2009). As a post-relationship creation, the new album marks a whole new chapter in her life and ranges from melancholic to wistful and hopeful. Maria’s first single from the album “Time Lapse Lifeline” standouts for its dynamic bittersweet harmonies, gorgeous vocals, powerful guitar and dramatic orchestral strings. The closing track, up-tempo alt-country styled number “Cartoons and Forever Plans” featuring R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe on backing vocals is an absolute favorite and leaves the listener with a lighter note and optimistic outlook.
Links:
MySpace profile
Official website
