It was about formation. It was about where leadership really begins. About the spaces that quietly shape courage, discipline, and voice long before someone earns a title. Heart-centered leadership in a changing world In a time marked by workplace disruption, AI acceleration, and shifting expectations of leaders, the need for leaders who can combine performance with empathy, courage, and community-building has never been greater. Throughout the conversation, one idea becomes clear: the leadership lessons cultivated in the Black church are not confined to the church. They are transferable, teachable, and urgently needed across corporate, academic, and community spaces. Since then, I spent more than 25 years as a strategic communicator for global agencies, my own along with a Fortune 10. Before the credentials. Before the awards and the accolades, there was a corporate executive with a podcast--and that was not cool, I was told. My, how far we've all come! #FlashbackFriday to the year 2020 when The Culture Soup Podcast had only been streaming for two years. I was invited to be on WFAA's Good Morning Texas for a segment called "Another Popin' Podcast" to discuss the show. This is a wonderful opportunity to align on the values that the show was built on. It's hard to believe that it's been seven years since we first launched, and you can tell that there has been an evolution. For one, my credentials shifted the topic from entrepreneurship to leadership. Secondly, The Coaching Corner morphed into it's own audio podcast on my Substack, Her Next Power Move; however, the substance of The Culture Soup Podcast has remained the same. Known for it's indepth conversations with the movers and shakers at the intersection of tech, business and culture, all of them my friends--and it's been quite a lineup for more than 300 episodes. I launched this show to expand my reach to engage a global audience that would be ready to consume by books. Four books later, here we are. Every book launch has begun on the show, and Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church will be no different. Understanding the intricacies of our brain function and its profound influence on our actions in various settings can empower us to excel, even when faced with formidable odds. The reality is that women, particularly those of color and individuals on the margins, grapple with unique challenges compounded by political dynamics and toxicity. These hurdles can be surmounted by grasping the fundamental science underpinning them: When we are depleted and discontent, our capacity to thrive diminishes. It's as straightforward as that. So, the key lies in discovering what brings us joy, how to preserve our energy—this is our strategy for maneuvering through spaces where we may feel marginalized, lest... In 2019, I did what many corporate types would call "the unthinkable." I walked away from opportunities at a Fortune 10 after being "surplussed" without a job lined up. Sure, I had opportunities externally. Yes, I had a seedling of a business that I had started, but I wanted to take the time to think through my next step methodically. I had a mission that only a few were aware of, and that drove me to seek out the one thing that I needed to activate it. Could I do it and remain in corporate? I had interested organizations telling me that I could do both-pursue my calling to author books and speak across the country and internationally and work for them. But I knew that would eventually cause friction. I'd lived it already. That one piece was missing that would activate my mission, and a scroll through Instagram and an ad from a longtime sisterfriend and former client would ultimately become the the gateway to my destiny. I let that sisterfriend turn the tables on me this week, and I thought it would be great to finally share my story: how I went from there...to here, five years later with a thriving, global executive and personal coaching and consulting practice, a publishing journey that has been extraordinary and the speaker tour that began in 2015 and has yet to end. What took me from a 25+ year-long career in strategic communication, agency side, agency owner, and client side to here? I pass Valorie Burton, MAPP, MCC the mic on my show, The Culture Soup Podcast as she featured me in her global preview call for The Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute. When you're outnumbered and singled out daily, it can kill your confidence... Even when being singled out comes in the form of a compliment. WATCH as I reassure women and women of color that even something as seemly benign as a compliment can work on your mindset in a negative way. We have to recognize the issue in order to deal with it, and many times this confidence killer that is all about perceptions and can lead to perfectionism can not only distract us from our true focus at work, but can have an adverse effect on our self image. Yes, even a compliment...in the workplace.

And Sis, you can, but when you do, consider that people do not tend to compartmentalize you as a person, so it's probably time that you stopped as well. In today's #YesPlease Ask me Anything, I share 5 questions you should ask yourself about your social media presence if you are an executive or C-Suite leader or have the aspirations to be. And trust me, I've seen high ranking women leaders get this right, with the perfect balance of sharing their interests, sharing their thought leadership or inspiration and sharing a bit more of their personal selves. Here are some tips: ~ Always elevate. Keep it positive. ~ Unless you have a serious interest in reviewing food or cooking, save the food photos for your stories or less accessible platforms ~ Remember, you are who you say you are at all times ~ Talking about work or referencing situations at work is ill-advised ~Have a close friend or colleague that you trust provide their honest opinion about your online presence ~ If you really must have fun that may confuse your community-- have it off line and with a tight circle of friends. Go with your mind first

Second guess yourself often? Ladies, I'm talking to you, especially my sisters--the high performing ones who are mid-to-late career yet still stuck in the middle of the leadership pipeline. You know, it isn't that we don't arrive at a decision as quickly as men do. It is that men tend to trust their first mind and then act on that decision. We tend to question our first notion. While some of that is rooted in the fact that we are painfully aware of perceptions of gender differences in the workplace--that we may be judged differently based on our decisions, that we may be scrutinized--our brains are simply wired differently to be more exploratory. Who can relate? One is not better than the other...it just is. And since maleness is centered in the workplace--that quick decision, quick action, seemingly risk-taking way that men attack things--is rewarded, applauded. (I've placed links to a couple different articles on the topic of the decision making of men v. women here and in the comments.) As I sit with a full case-load of clients each day, it is very interesting to see who knows the answer to their own question and then proceeds to ruminate over all the reasons why their answer is probably not the right one, when their very own behavior demonstrates that they know their first mind was the best. All this week my social campaigns have been discussing languishing, the blahs, brain fog and I’ve provided some guidance on what you can do; however, there is nothing better than sitting with a licensed therapist to really get underneath what is bothering you. So that’s what we are doing on episode 165, and I didn’t have to look very far. My friend of more than 20 years, fellow singer and leader at a well- known non-profit Tina L Robertson, LCSW-S graced the show and we talked about what’s ailing us all in the midst of our current crisis sandwich. She is a licensed clinical social worker and practicing trauma therapist. In this two part series, we discuss everything from "TikTok psychology" and the need to label everyone with some ailment that actually requires a diagnosis or professional designation (ie narcissism to bipolar or sociopath) and even the trend of unqualified coaches, counselors and therapist who are now swarming the Internet. She even provides tips on how to know the real ones from the others. Can a date gone wrong simply be a mismatch, or do we instantly resort to to "cut-off" culture or brand them with one of the many popular terms that are swirling? In fact, like most of us, back then, she didn't even know what that role actually was. Mostly, it didn't exist yet. But she stepped out on faith and had a conversation with a mentor who helped her see her skill set in a different light. Now, she is the head of multicultural content for Audible. When Abby West (she/her) worked for the likes of People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and Essence, you couldn't have told her that one day she would be leading the charge for digital audio content for creators of color at one of the most cutting-edge content and tech companies on the planet. In fact, like most of us, back then, she didn't even know what that role actually was. Mostly, it didn't exist yet.

But she stepped out on faith and had a conversation with a mentor who helped her see her skill set in a different light. Now, she is the head of multicultural content for Audible. Abby met back in 2016, and we sat down recently to discuss the power of the medium, and what special magic creators of color bring to it—storytelling and the spoken word.

How One Word Can Hold You Back

I know. You're killing it. Slaying everyday, but do you know the one word that could be holding you back from moving forward? The year was 2018, and while I knew about the calibration process, I had no clue how subjective and biased it could be. In fact, these sessions had gone in my favor in the past. After you've received consecutive exceeds ratings, calibration really isn't a word that shakes you. But if there are people in the room who want to see you crash and burn—they can not only impact your rating, but they can also hit you where it hurts most—your compensation. It happened to me, and I think the most surprising part was the negativity came from people who had no real experience with my work or with working with me. They fed into the gossip mill, shared false information that had nothing to do with my work and ultimately impacted my compensation. Not all calibration processes are horror shows like the one I just described. In fact, many of them are not only transparent, but they have a process that must be adhered to and leave very little room for "opinions," especially from people who have very little to do with your work. Still, there are those who may not have one thing against you, but are willing to go to bat from someone else and don't mind your being the collateral damage. It can get ugly. That said, it is imperative that you know about the calibration process in your company. Knowledge is power, and it also yields the ability to impact the outcome by having some awareness of who will be involved. How's the strength of your brand? How's your reputation? How many strong advocates will you have in the room? (Ready and willing to counter attacks?) How are they positioned politically? How many detractors? What could be their political motivations? Moving forward blindly could hold you back. Get to know your calibration process... good, bad or ugly.

It's pretty handy for me as well since I just took some time off for myself and went on holiday with my family. With two books on the way, I'll continue to work while you enjoy.

Sports is culture, and culture is sports, but recently, we have seen where some have suggested that sports has no voice in social issues, especially the racial ones. But more and more, we are seeing teams, players, executives and even leagues making their positions clear. Most recently, we've seen sports figures advocate for themselves in the realm of mental health. There's a lesson in it for all of us. When you have the money and the clout, you can call the shots despite the risk. That's one of the leadership lessons that I discuss with @Larry Lundy, sports industry expert and marketing leader.
