St. Paul is traveling in Derbe and Lystra, which is in modern day Turkey. He meets young Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish mother and a Greek father. Timothy’s parents must have had a strong influence on their son, because he is highly recommended by the believers of that area. Paul invites Timothy to join him in his travels from city to city proclaiming the love of God for all peoples. 

Paul and Timothy also spread the decisions reached by the apostles and presbyters in Jerusalem, commonly known as the decrees of the Council of Jerusalem. The Council of Jerusalem basically said the following (Acts 15): that Gentile converts did not need to follow the Mosaic Law of the Jews, specifically circumcision, to be saved. It affirmed that Gentiles - and all believers - receive salvation through God’s grace alone. 

The Council of Jerusalem also listed four other requirements. Believing Gentiles were to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, sexual immorality, meat from strangled animals, and blood. They were also asked to continue to remember the poor within their churches, something which Paul was happy to comply. 

Perhaps some explanation is needed about “meat from strangled animals and blood.” Ancient pagan practices of drinking blood and cooking animals in blood was not an accepted practice in the dietary law of the Jews. It might have been a compromise to help make nonbelieving Jews more comfortable in sharing meals with believing Gentiles. 

The Gospel of John highlights the difference between living in the world and not being of the world. The “world” can desensitize us. When we watch a steady stream of violent programming, for example, we lose something of our basic human compassion for others. When we let ourselves be consumed by sensuality, we can lose basic respect for the other person and everyone’s uniqueness in the eyes of God. 

Believers know their limits. St. James (1:27) puts it this way: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” James is saying that we must strive to maintain personal holiness by avoiding corrupting influences, selfish values, and the compromising sins of society while still engaging in it. 

We serve and honor God through our thoughts and actions. As Christians, we must make every effort to turn aside from the capital sins of pride, envy, wrath (anger), sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. These sins are counteracted by their corresponding virtues: humility, generosity, chastity, meekness, temperance, kindness, and diligence (zeal). Overcoming laziness, for example, is the result of persistent effort and devotion to spiritual and daily duties. We cultivate all of these virtues through prayer and grace, correcting habits through small acts of charity, utilizing the sacraments to strengthen our willpower, and regularly examining our lives to keep these capital sins at bay. 

It is exciting to follow Paul and Timothy’s travels around Asia Minor, but God’s invitation to radical conversion and new life is just as alive today. Instead of asking, “What is God calling me to do?,” the better question might be: “Who is God calling me to be?”

Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que ellos son sus elegidos. Lo dice con estas palabras: No son ustedes los que me han elegido, soy yo quien los ha elegido y los ha destinado para que vayan y den fruto y su fruto permanezca .Uds. y yo somos también los ELEGIDOS DE JESÚS. Sobre todo Uds. y yo hemos elegido seguir a Jesús. Es mas Uds y yo hemos elegido, DECIDO vivir estas palabras de Jesús cuando nos dice: : “Éste es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado¨ Lo digo así. UDS. Y YO SOMOS LOS ELEGIDOS QUE HEMOS ELEGIDO AMAR, SEGUIR A JESÚS CON EL MISMO AMOR CON QUE JESÚS NOS AMA A NOSOTROS. .…y lo dice a nosotros también porque somos también los elegid Jesus says to the disciples that they are God´s ELEGIDOS. 

En la lectura hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles Pablo y los demás le ennvian una carta a los nuevos cristianos de Antioquía.  Hacen esto porque otras personas le han dicho a los nuevos cristianos de Antioquía que están obligados a hacer cosas de la ley judia que ahora no tienen tanta importancia.  Le dicen a los cristianos que ellos para seguir fielmente a Jesús deben hacer lo que Jesús nos dice en el evangelio de hoy…AMAR A LOS DEMÁS COMO DIOS LES AMA A AELLOS.

Uds. y yo sabemos que Jesús ofreció su vida en la Cruz para que conociéramos el gran amor que Jesús y el Padre llevan para cada uno de nosotros.  Cuando los nuevos cristianos de Antioquía leyeron a esta carta consoladora dice Hechos: Al leer aquellas palabras alentadoras, todos se llenaron de júbilo. Ellos entendieron que lo importante en seguir a Jesús es amar a los demás. Inclusive ellos entendieron como nosotros entendemos que debemos amar y perdonar hasta a aquellas personas que nos hayan herido y nos hayan causado tristeza y dolor. Porque eso es lo que hizo Jesús mismo.  Jesús ama hasta aquellas personas que no le conocen todavía o aquellas personas que tratan a los demás con desprecio . Uds y yo debemos vivir con lo que llamo LA ESPERANZA DE JESÚS. La esperanza de Jesús lo expresó al final del evangelio de hoy cuando, al terminar su discurso en la Ultima Cena dijo esto:  Padre justo, el mundo no te ha conocido, pero yo te he conocido, y estos han conocido que tú me enviaste. Y les he dado a conocer tu nombre, y lo daré a conocer aún, para que el amor con que me has amado, esté en ellos, y yo en ellos.  Esta esperanza de Jesús debe ser la mia y la suya también.

Estas palabras de Jesús se las dice a Tadeo y los demás discípulos en la Ultima Cena. Es la noche antes de será Jesús crucificado en el Calvario. Son palabras de ternura y cariño. Jesús les recuerda que el Padre y él mismo los ama tanto. Les asegura que el Espíritu Santo les irá ayudándoles entender y vivir mejor las palabras de Jesús que son, a la misma vez, las palabras del Padre Celestial. Entonces viene esta pregunta de Judas Tadeo:“Señor, ¿por qué razón a nosotros sí te nos vas a manifestar y al mundo no?” La respuesta de Jesús a esta pregunta de Jesús es sencillamente que Jesús repite las palabras que ya les he dicho sobre como el Padre y Jesús viniendo para hacer su morada en ellos.  Yo me atrevo decir lo que Jesús pudiera haberles respondido. Creo yo que Jesús podría haberles dicho esto: “Tadeo y todos Uds. mis queridos discípulos. Eso va ser la tarea de Uds.  Uds. mismos van a manifestarme al mundo. Uds. con su amor, con sus palabras, Uds. con compartir con los demás todas las cosas que han vivido, todas las cosas que Uds. han Visto, todos los momentos hermosos y bellos que hemos vivido juntos…Hermanas, Hermanos en Cristo hacen dos semanas varias personas entraron la Iglesia por el Bautismo, la Confirmación. Esas nuevas cristianas, al comenzar recibiendo el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús mismo en la Eucaristía…esos nuevos seguidores de Jesús se juntaron a Cristo y se juntaron a nosotros para ser IGLESIA. Sabemos que la Iglesia, el Cuerpo Vivo de Jesús, su tarea diaria es manifestar, mejor dicho, hacer visible la presencia y el amor de Jesús en el mundo de hoy.  Si alguien me pregunta: Padre Martín, ¿Conoces tú a Jesús?  Lo que yo les respondo es que. YO VOY CONOCIENDO A JESÚS CADA DÍA UN POCO MAS.. Le doy un ejemplo. Hace dos semanas mi querido amigo y compañero de Ordenación, Padre Damian me compartió su decisión de dejar el tratamiento de diálisis, sabiendo que su muerte, mejor dicho, su encuentro con Jesús , la Virgen y todos los santos iba a llegar pronto. Yo, al ver la valentía, la fe y   el gozo de Padre Damian, pues yo conocía a Jesús un poco más…al ver yo la obra de Dios, del Espíritu Santo en mi querido amigo.

Vivo acá con otros redentoristas y sacerdotes. Tengo los 86 años. El mayor acá es Padre Bobby que tiene los 95 años. Celebramos la Santa Misa juntos cada mañana a las 8 y media de la mañana. Tomamos turnos siendo el sacerdote que es el sacerdote principal. Ese sacerdote siempre predica una breve homilía sobre el evangelio y las lecturas. A mí me gustan mucho las homilías de Padre Tomás Travers que tiene el mismo nombre que yo. Padre Travers siempre habla de ABBA, el Papá de Jesús y el papá de Uds. y yo también. Hoy Jesús le dice a la gente esto: Dice: Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen. Yo les doy la vida eterna y no perecerán jamás. El Padre Travers nos diría hoy algo así.  Jesús vino al mundo para que Uds. y yo conociéramos nuestro Papá nuestro Abba en el cielo. Es más Jesús quiere que hoy y cada día Uds. y yo conociéramos un poco mas ese gran amor y ternura y cariño que nuestro Papá Celestial tiene para cada uno de nosotros. Y eso a pesar de los pecados, de los errores y malos pasos que hayamos hecho.  Nuestro Papá Celestial quiere que cada uno de nosotros seamos como Pablo y Bernabé en la primera lectura hoy. Pablo, por cierto, había hecho muchos pecados y errores cuando perseguía y apresaba a los cristianos. Dice la lectura hoy sobre la labor misionera de Pablo y Bernabé: Cuando llegaron estas noticias a la comunidad cristiana de Jerusalén, Bernabé fue enviado a Antioquía. Llegó Bernabé, y viendo la acción de la gracia de Dios, se alegró mucho; Hermanas y hermanos en Cristo, hoy Jesús y Nuestro común Papá Celestial desean que Uds. y yo permitan que el Espíritu Santo actúe en nosotros para que toda la gente que veamos en este día de hoy se llene del amor y de la alegría de Dios.

Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to John.

The crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”

So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

So they said to Jesus, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

     Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Homily

Today’s readings ask us to examine where our lives of faith are grounded. Are they grounded in the words and actions of Jesus or are they simply a set of practices with which we have become comfortable?

In the gospel the crowd asks Jesus for a sign to believe in him. Remember, Jesus had just fed the crowd with the five barley loaves and two fish the day before. But they wanted something like the manna which had accompanied their ancestors in the desert for forty years, which they called bread from heaven. Jesus tells them that the true bread from heaven is what God is prepared to give them now, which will not just sustain the body, but will give life to the world. Of course, the crowd responds asking him to give them this bread always. Jesus then says to them: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

When we hear these words, we immediately think of receiving the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion; but Jesus is not speaking just of the Eucharist. He is calling each of us to share in his way of being: to love as he loved, to forgive as he forgave, to relate to God as his beloved children and to see in others our brothers and sisters and bring them consolation and healing as he did. That is just as difficult for us today as it was for those listening to Jesus’ words. The bishop St. Augustine liked to tell his people: “become him whom you eat.”

One who did just that was Stephen, whom we hear about in today’s first reading. St. Luke tells us that Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and fearlessly proclaimed Jesus as the Lord and Savior promised by God through the prophets. This did not sit well with the elders and the scribes of the Jewish people. They thought they were done with Jesus by crucifying him, but Stephen accuses them not only of being blind to the law of God, but also of being in the line of those who murdered the prophets. He then proclaims Jesus not only as risen, but seated at the right hand of God. This was all too much for them. They threw Stephen out of the city and began to stone him.

In this moment of facing death, Stephen remained a faithful witness to Jesus. He shared Jesus’ way of being by his attitude toward his murderers: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And he died as Jesus did: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” A young man named Saul witnessed the stoning and may even have incited it; but I am sure he was affected by the manner of Stephen’s death, because when Jesus appeared to him on the way to Damascus, he was quickly converted.

The question for us is whether our lives witness to the power of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus? In a world where our Pope and bishops are being attacked by figures in authority who feel threatened by their preaching the gospel, may our way of living and speaking in and of Christ Jesus be a witness that can transform the world.

Pope Francis, visibly moved, responded, “Only when we are able to cry are we able to come close to responding to your question. There are some realities that you can only see through eyes that are cleansed by tears.” 

Naturally, any person comes face to face with the question: “Why does a God who is good and loving, permit or allow such suffering to enter into the world?” People suffer all around us. No doubt we ourselves at times need to embrace the mystery of suffering. Perhaps the most difficult suffering of all is to lose someone, to have someone we love, a spouse, a parent, a sibling, a close friend, or, God forbid, a daughter or son die. 

There are no easy answers to suffering. One can read every theology book in the world and still be left wondering about the question of suffering. But Jesus was crystal clear about how his earthly journey would end. He said his disciples: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to these things.”

On Good Friday, we see our Lord Jesus face tremendous suffering, humiliation, unjust judgment, scourging, beating, crowning with thorns. He is made to drag his cross to Calvary, being cursed and spat upon all the way. Nails are pounded into his flesh and his is lifted up, struggling to breath. But perhaps the greatest suffering of Jesus on the cross is not physical. He’s been abandoned by all his disciples except for John, his mother Mary, and a few faithful women. He cries out to his Father, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” 

On the cross, Jesus is saying to his Father: “Are you here with me? Am I dying alone? Are you in the this horrible dark place?” And then he says, trusting, knowing that his Father is with him, that the Spirit of God is present, “Into your hands, Father, I commend my spirit? 

When God became a human person, he did not run from suffering. He faced the cross. And so when we face the cross in our life, be it on a physical plane, be it emotional suffering, spiritual heartache. Being it just watching the news and seeing how much pain there is in the world. We look at the cross and say, “If God was at Calvary, and he was. If God was dying on the cross, and he was. Then God is in every place of pain and suffering. God is there. God is present. God has not abandoned the poor and pain-filled people of the world.”

But it’s important to remember, that our faith is not only a Good Friday faith. Good Friday leads to Easter Sunday. It leads to Resurrection. It leads to Christ overcoming the bonds of death and being raised up in the Spirit to life eternal with God the Father in heaven. We live that hope. The funeral mass prayer sums it up: “There comes a time when every tear shall be wiped away and we shall see you, our God, as you are and become like you and be with you, face to face. 

El evangelio de hoy trata de los dos discípulos camino para Emaús y el momento cuando San Pedro sana al tullido frente al templo.

Te invito pensar en un momento cuando tú sabías que Cristo estaba vivo y que Cristo te ama inmensamente. Momentos como eso son hermosos. ¿No es así? Pues hoy el evangelio nos habla de un momento hermoso que tuvieron Cleofás y su compañero. Porque ellos, pensando que Jesús estaba muerto iban caminando, por suerte, muy tristes para el pueblo de Emaús. Entonces Jesús mismo se puso a caminar con ellos y ellos con Cristo. Poco después en la mesa en casa Jesús les partió el pan para ellos y lo reconocieron. Fue un momento muy hermoso para ellos dos.  Entonces unos días después hubo otro momento hermoso. Un hombre tullido se le acercó a Pedro pidiendo una limosna. Pero, en vez de darle una limosna, Pedro invocó

 a la persona de Cristo Resucitado le devolvió al hombre dos piernas sanas. Fue para aquel hombre un momento hermoso. Es mas pasó al lado de una puerta que tenía el nombre…PUERTA HERMOSA. El hombre, ya sano iba brincando y glorificándole a Dios.  Así que, hermana y hermano te invito de nuevo pensar y recordar otros momentos hermosos que has vivido tú y tu familia. Momentos cuando Uds. sintieron el amor, la compasión y la ternura de Dios, de Cristo hacerse vivo en tu vida. Dale gracias a Dios en este tiempo Pascual por tener Cristo Jesús vivo…Cristo te invita ir con él para crear otros momentos hermosos en el mundo que hace mucha falta la hermosura.

La Vigilia Pascual esta noche nos recuerda de aquel Sábado Santo  después de la muerte de Jesús en la Cruz. El dolor de Pedro y los demás discípulos era muy  fuerte. Es posible que en aquel momento de tristeza y dolor que  no recordaron  la promesa de Jesús de que él iba resucitar a la vida en tres días.  Hay otras personas ya bautizadas que van a recibir esta noche la plena fuerza de Espíritu Santo en sus vidas. Además muchos de esas personas esta noche  recibirán a Jesús en la Eucaristía por primera vez.  Esta noche el  Pregón Pascual nos habla al igual que esta lectura de San Pablo  sobre la hermosura y grandeza del Bautismo.Termino compartiendo unas bellas frases cantadas del Pregón Pascual :

1.Porque éstas son las fiestas de Pascua, en las que se inmola el verdadero Cordero,cuya sangre consagra las puertas de los fieles………2.Ésta es la noche que a todos los que creen en Cristo,por toda la tierra, los arranca de los vicios del mundo y de la oscuridad del pecado, los restituye a la gracia y los agrega a los santos……3.Necesario fue el pecado de Adán, que ha sido borrado por la muerte de Cristo…….4..¡Feliz la culpa que mereció tal Redentor!........5.Y así, esta noche santa ahuyenta los pecados, lava las culpas, devuelve la inocencia a los caídos, la alegría a los tristes, expulsa el odio, trae la concordia, doblega a los poderosos………

Hermanos, Hermanas por favor ruegen for los nuevos cristianos de esta noche para que sigan viviendo la compasión, ternura y justicia de Dios en Cristo.

Jesús por supuesto sufrió mucho por la traición de Judas. Jesús además sufrió también al ser negado por Pedro. Es mas sufrió cuandoquiera uno de nosotros no viva el amor y la compasión con los demás.  Pero lo que Jesús más comparte con nosotros hoy es el gozo y la alegría que él está viviendo…Es la alegría que Jesús siente para ensenarnos en creces su amor para cada uno de nosotros. Jesús nos dice: Ahora ha sido glorificado el Hijo del hombre y Dios ha sido glorificado en él. Si Dios ha sido glorificado en él, también Dios lo glorificará en sí mismo y pronto lo glorificará. Para Jesús su Pasión y Muerte va ser un momento de gloria. Un momento doloroso por supuesto pero un dolor seguido por la alegría de su resurrección.  Hoy Jesús les recuerda a nosotros, sus discípulos. nos recuerda Jesús que nosotros mismos vamos a seguirle…amando y sirviendo a los pobres y sufridos durante toda nuestra vida al igual que hizo Jesús durante los treinta y tres años que pasó acá abajo con nosotros. En este martes de la Semana Santa Jesús nos invita a sentir el dolor de todos los que sufren: en nuestro país y en los países metidos en la guerra en Irán, en África, en Israel. Jesús nos invita orar y hacer esfuerzos a que la gloria de Jesús, la gloria y justicia de Dios. A que aquella gloria de Jesús y un santa unión y comunión entre todos los países del mundo se vaya apareciendo.

¡Qué triste el sacerdote Caifás! Porque Caifás tenía la razón y a la misma vez Caifás se equivocó grandemente. Porque Cristo se ofreció para morir en la Cruz para que Uds. y yo conociéramos el inmenso amor que Dios tiene para nosotros. Digo yo el inmenso amor que Dios, que Jesús tiene para personas equivocadas como era Caifás y como somos nosotros mismos muchas veces. Caifás dice hoy, cuando va planificando capturar y matar a Jesús: “Ustedes no saben nada. No comprenden que conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que toda la nación perezca” Lo que Caifás no entendió fue que aquel solo hombre, Jesucristo fue el Hijo Único de Dios que había sido enviado por su Padre Celestial para enseñarnos la inmensidad del amor de Dios para cada uno de nosotros. No leí la lectura hoy del profeta Ezequiel. Pero dice cosas que nos explican este inmenso amor de Dios para mí y para cada uno de Uds.

Ezequiel nos dice: ellos van a ser mi pueblo y yo voy a ser su Dios”…. ellos no tendrán más que un pastor…. Voy a hacer con ellos una alianza eterna de paz……… yo voy a ser su Dios y ellos van a ser mi pueblo………Como nos acerca la Semana las palabras de Jesús y de Ezequiel nos hacen sentir dolor por Caifás y por todos que todavía no han llegado a conocer y aceptar el inmenso amor de Dios, del Padre Celestial y nuestro Buenísimo pastor Jesús…que nos ayuda conocer la inmensidad del amor de Dios.

Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to John.

Some in the crowd who heard these words of Jesus said, "This is truly the Prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But others said, "The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not Scripture say that the Christ will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this man." So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed." Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, "Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee."

Then each went to his own house.

In today’s gospel we do not hear Jesus speak, but he is the center of everyone’s attention. They all have an opinion about him, but they cannot figure out who he really is. Some think he is the Messiah, and for that the Chief Priests and Pharisees sent their guards to arrest Jesus. Other question Jesus’ Galilean origins: "The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he?” The Pharisees are adamant: “Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." Others say that the Messiah must come from Bethlehem. They did not know what we know from Matthew and Luke that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and is of the house of David.

Jesus, however, makes little of his human origins, whether he is from Galilee or Bethlehem. In the verses that come before today’s gospel reading, he declares that he comes from the one who sent him. He comes from above; it was God the Father who sent him.

For saying that the Chief Priests and Pharisees were even more anxious to arrest Jesus, but the guards returned empty handed, saying: "Never before has anyone spoken like this man." So. They ridiculed the guards and the crowds who were beginning to believe in Jesus.

Interestingly, a lone voice spoke up in Jesus’ defense. It was Nicodemus, the Pharisee who some time before had gone to see Jesus by night. He asked: "Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" The other Pharisees ridiculed him for his efforts; and then each went off to his own house.

Listening to Jesus can bring ridicule and following him may even be dangerous. That was true in Jesus’ day and is still true in our own. Even now, people are not in agreement over what Jesus represents. Jesus himself said that he had come not to judge the world, but to save it. His compassion for the outcast, the suffering and hungry drew an attentive following, but today compassion is considered weakness and attention to the needy a wasteful use of resources.

Christians who adopt this attitude overlook Jesus’ humanity on this earth and concentrates on his reigning in power at the right hand of God. This is a Jesus who will come in judgment for the earth, and will come at the head of a victorious army of angels. Thus, they can bless wars, whether in the Ukraine or in Iran.

Of course, Pope Francis and now Pope Leo have questioned and sharply criticized this self-styled form of Christianity. Scripture teaches us that Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. When he comes in glory, he will gather to himself all who have imitated his life of love and reconciliation. As he said in the famous parable of judgment: “what you have done to the least of my brothers and sisters you have done to me.”

We need more Nicodemuses today who are willing to stand up for the justice that flows from recognizing the dignity of every human being as created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed in the blood of Christ. We may not be able to do much on the world stage, but we can begin by recognizing the dignity of each person in our home, our school and our work.

Naaman, the army commander under the King of Aram, was appalled that the Israeli prophet, Elisha, did not come out of his house to administer a cure for his leprosy. He was even less impressed with the Elisha’s directive to bath in the Jordon River seven times. I’m sure Naaman was right to say that the rivers in Syria were far more inspirational than the lowly Jordan River, but he was missing the point. Fortunately for him, his servants were more perceptive to the smaller, less noticeable ways that God works in our lives. Naaman had more faith in his servants than in Elisha, but after his cure, he was moved to say: “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel.” 

We have all experienced moments of God’s extraordinary grace. Perhaps it was an answer to a prayer, a conversion of a loved one, or even the bending of the laws of nature. But we must remember that Jesus comes to us in humble, tasteless wafers. He does not make a show of his presence. He waits patiently for us to step into the waters of faith, to believe that God is present and wants us to experience God’s abundant life within us. 

When we listen with understanding; when we care to be engaged in the lives of the ordinary people around us; when we demonstrate love and gratitude for the gift of another day and all the promise it offers; then we will be well on our way to becoming the perceptive and malleable disciples of love that God envisions. St. Alphonsus would be proud.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo Jesús,

Les doy la bienvenida a "LA BUENA PALABRA", nuestro podcast diario en el que los Misioneros Redentoristas de la Provincia de Baltimore comparten la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Soy el Padre Manuel Rodríguez, redentorista, de la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

Hoy es el 9 de marzo del año 2026. El Evangelio de hoy nos habla de la ocasión cuando Jesús fue expulsado de su propio pueblo de Nazaret. Lo empujan. Lo rechazan. Lo quieren matar.

Y al final…Él se va. Se aleja. En silencio.

Jesús vino a los suyos. Vino a los que amaba. Y lo rechazaron. Y se fue.

Hoy, hermanos, Cristo sigue tocando puertas. Toca la puerta de tu corazón.

No para pedir dinero. No para quitarte nada. Solo quiere entrar. Solo quiere estar contigo.

Pero a veces nosotros le decimos:

“No ahora.” “No quiero cambiar.” “No quiero dejar ese pecado.” “No quiero comprometerme.” Y cerramos la puerta.

Y Jesús… no obliga. Se va.

Pero hoy, en la cuaresma del año 2026… Jesús todavía está tocando, una vez más.

Tal vez hoy sea tu oportunidad. Tal vez hoy es el día de abrir la puerta de tu corazón.

Porque un día en el futuro…quizás sea demasiado tarde.

Un día queramos volver…pero el tiempo habrá pasado.

Hermanos, no dejemos ir a Jesús.

No repitamos el error de Nazaret. No repitamos el error de ese hijo.

Abramos hoy. Aquí. Ahora. Y dile en tu corazón:

Señor, perdóname. Entra en mi vida. No te vayas. Quédate conmigo.

Porque hermanos…La mayor tragedia no es que Dios muera…

La mayor tragedia…es que lo rechacemos mientras esté vivo y tocando nuestra puerta.

Amén.

Hoy en las comunidades donde hay personas preparándose para ser bautizadas y entrar la Iglesia…ser miembro del pueblo de Dios en la próxima Vigilia Pascual. Hoy se lee esta bella historia sobre cuando Jesús llega a Samaría y se encuentra con una mujer. Escuchemos.

Entonces llegó una mujer de Samaria a sacar agua y Jesús le dijo: “Dame de beber”. (Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida). La samaritana le contestó: “¿Cómo es que tú, siendo judío, me pides de beber a mí, que soy samaritana?” (Porque los judíos no tratan a los samaritanos). Jesús le dijo: “Si conocieras el don de Dios y quién es el que te pide de beber, tú le pedirías a él, y él te daría agua viva”.

         La mujer le respondió: “Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua y el pozo es profundo, ¿cómo vas a darme agua viva? ¿Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dio este pozo, del que bebieron él, sus hijos y sus ganados?” Jesús le contestó: “El que bebe de esta agua vuelve a tener sed. Pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré, nunca más tendrá sed; el agua que yo le daré se convertirá dentro de él en un manantial capaz de dar la vida eterna” …PALABRA DE DIOS

Hoy en llos llamados escrutinios miles de personas en varias iglesias católicas del mundo entero todos ellos, al igual que la mujer samaritana todos ellos están deseando beber de esa misma agua para que ese mismo manantial capaz de darles la vida eterna. Están esperando con gozo y esperanza la Vigilia Santa. El escrutinio va así. Primero todos oran para los elegidos para que ellos tengan fortaleza a vivir el don de la libertad como hijos de Dios. Después la comunidad ora para ellos que

Ellos saboreen la Palabra de Dios y su sentido profundo. Entonces, al igual que la mujer samaritana ellos revisen sus vidas. Reconozcan los pecados que hayan hecho. Como se les acerca el día feliz de su bautismo ellos oren para tener un gran deseo para el Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesús en sus vidas. Ellos se preparan compartir con nosotros el asombro de conocer y amar a Jesús.  Después   el sacerdote les anima a que rechacen a satanás y abracen el bello yugo de Jesús. El sacerdote le pone la mano sobre cada uno de ellos y pide que el Espíritu Santo tome posesión de ellos. Finalmente el sacerdote les recuerde que la persona de Jesus es aquel Manantial que ellos buscan para sanar sus heridas, satisfacer su sed y darles la paz.

Hoy los apóstoles pelean sobre quienes de ellos iba ser el más grande en el reino de Jesús. Jesús mismo acaba de hablarles sobre la Pasión y Muerte que él va a sufrir. Habla también sobre su resurrección. Pero los discípulos no entienden. Inclusive la mamá de Santiago y Juan acaba de pedirles que ellos, sus hijos fueran a sentarse al lado de Jesús en su reino. Ella tampoco entiende nada sobre la Cruz venidera de Jesús. Porque cuando Jesús les pregunta a Santiago y Juan: ¿Podrán beber el cáliz que yo he de beber?" ellos le dicen que sí. Pero no entienden que beber el cáliz de Jesús quiere decir que ellos, y todos nosotros que amamos y seguimos a Jesús TODOS NOSOTROS VAMOS A SUFRIR AL IGUAL QUE JESÚS.  Porque seguir a Jesús y vivir como Jesús nos obliga a ser, al igual que Jesús, ser un siervo de Jesús y un siervo de la gente más pobre, más sufrida, más olvidada y maltratada de este mundo. Jesús no pone así hoy. Les dice a sus discípulos y eso incluye a mí a todos nosotros:  El que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea el que los sirva, y el que quiera ser primero, que sea su esclavo; así como el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar la vida por la redención de todos".

A M I GO…..AMIGO....E N E M I GO.....Si no fuera las letras EN La palabra sería AMIGO.  Pero eso de dejar de o ser o de tener un enemigo  para alegremente SER o TENER un AMIGO, pues no es cuestión de cambiar letras.  Porque eso de oír este bello consejo de Jesús de amar y hacer el bien hasta a esa gente  que nos hayan hecho o los que te hayan hecho el mal…eso es dejar que el Espíritu Santo de Dios hacer su obra potente y maravillosa en la mente y el corazón de nosotros.  Yo personalmente no deseo mal a nadie. Yo personalmente no conozco a nadie que me desea hacerme daño. Quédate!!! Me corrijo. Hay alguien que quisiera no fuera mi enemigo. Pero tristemente lo es. No lo odio ni nada de eso.  Pero lamentablemente él o ellos tomaron la decisión hace mucho tiempo atrás de ser mi enemigo . No quisiera tener este enemigo.  El u ellos (ahora Uds. van a saber quienes son!!!) uno de ellos fue por un tiempo un ángel.  El tenía un nombre que aquel lejano entonces  era muy bello. Lo llamaban el Portador de la Luz…En latín eso se dice así: LUCIFER. Durante este tiempo de la Cuaresma cuando nos preparamos para celebrar la Pasión, Muerte todos tenemos un solo enemigo. Entre otras tentaciones este enemigo no quiere que Uds. y yo amemos  a los demás incluyendo y quizás mas que otros a la gente olvidada, pisoteada y maltratada de este mundo. En la lectura de hoy Moisés le dice a la gente, después de darles los Diez Mandamientos: "El Señor, tu Dios, te manda hoy que cumplas estas leyes y decretos; guárdalos, por lo tanto, y ponlos en práctica con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma. Hoy Jesús, después de animarnos a amar hasta quienes nos aman Jesús nos recuerda de lo que será la recompensa si hacemos caso a sus palabras. Nos dice: para que sean hijos de su Padre celestial, que hace salir su sol sobre los buenos y los malos, y manda su lluvia sobre los justos y los injustos. Así llegaremos a ser como era una vez Lucifer. Portadores de la Luz…la Luz que es Jesús mismo. Así sea.

Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Saturday after Ash Wednesday.

Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to Luke.

Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him. Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them. The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”

In our gospel today we hear Jesus call Levi, a tax collector, to follow him. In the gospel according to Matthew, he will be called Matthew. The name is not so important as the fact that he was a tax collector, a class of people who was despised in Jesus’ time because they because they were agents of the Roman occupiers. So, we might ask, along with the Pharisees, why would Jesus call such a person?

Jesus obviously knew Matthew/Levi’s heart better that he did, because that tax collector left his post immediately and followed Jesus. His joy at being chosen by Jesus was so great that he threw a great banquet and invited his friends, tax collectors and other outcasts, of course, to get to know Jesus.

The Pharisees were not impressed. They tried to shame Jesus’ disciples: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” They implied that anyone who would associate with tax collectors had to be a sinner. Therefore, the disciples must shun such company.

Jesus wasted no time in coming to the defense of his disciples: “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.” To follow Jesus, one must humbly recognize that he or she is in need of God’s saving grace and that Jesus is the source of that grace.

In our polarized society, where we are expected to show our allegiance to our own group by despising and bad mouthing those of other opinions or cultures, the call of Matthew/Levi should serve as a wake-up call. Jesus invites the outcasts to follow him and restores their value as children of God. We, each one of us, has been called by Christ, not because of any merit we may think we have, but because of the inner value he sees in us, and wants to bring forth.

The prophet Isaiah in today’s first reading shows us the way. “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.”

The Pharisees erred not by calling those who associated with the tax collectors sinners, but by thinking that they themselves were not. Jesus corrects them, not by denying that those with whom he was associating were sinners, but by saying that those were the very ones he had come to find and to save.

As we enter the season of Lent let us recognize our need for forgiveness for the many times we have not acted as children of God and thank Jesus for calling us into his light. Then we must invite others to share in this moment of grace, as did Matthew/Levi.

El Evangelio de hoy, 9 de febrero de 2026, nos muestra cómo, durante el ministerio público de Jesús, la gente enferma y necesitada lo buscaba sin descanso.

Aparece una frase verdaderamente hermosa:

“Le rogaban que los dejaran tocar siquiera el borde de su manto.”

Y el Evangelio nos dice que, efectivamente, todos los que lo tocaban quedaban curados.

Es impresionante notar que aquella gente no buscaba explicaciones teológicas, ni discursos doctrinales, ni milagros espectaculares, ni señales del cielo. Tampoco pedían audiencias privadas, ni tenían que pedir citas.

Le llevaban su dolor, su sufrimiento, sus necesidades y sus esperanzas.

Intuían que en Jesús había vida… y eso les bastaba.

Hoy, nosotros, discípulos de Jesús, estamos llamados a continuar esa presencia suya en medio del mundo. En nuestros distintos ambientes —en el trabajo, en la escuela, en la familia, en la comunidad— también estamos llamados a llevar vida.

Cuando enfrentamos una situación tensa, podemos llevar la paz de Jesús.

Cuando consolamos a alguien que sufre, podemos ser un instrumento de su consuelo.

Cuando escuchamos con paciencia, acompañamos con cariño o simplemente estamos presentes, hacemos visible a Cristo.

Cada encuentro con una persona herida, cansada o necesitada puede convertirse en un pequeño milagro de cercanía.

Que quien se encuentre con nosotros pueda irse un poco más aliviado, un poco más animado, un poco más en paz.

Por eso hoy pidamos en oración:

“Señor Jesús, haznos conscientes de que nuestra presencia puede ser un reflejo de la tuya. Que nuestras palabras, nuestros gestos y nuestra cercanía sean como ese manto que consuela, acompaña y comunica tu Vida a todos los que sufren.”

Porque cuando dejamos que Jesús viva en nosotros,

quienes nos tocan… también puedan encontrar sanación.

Pope Francis, visibly moved, responded, “Only when we are able to cry are we able to come close to respond to your question. There are some realities that you can only see through eyes that are cleansed by tears.”

Today’s Gospel reading about people rushing to their homes to gather the sick and bring them to Jesus tells us that the question of suffering is one of the most challenging ones of any time to address. We see physical suffering, people with medical conditions and serious diseases carrying great pain. We know there are people suffering from depression, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. And then there are people spiritually suffering - lost, without hope, in despair - no faith, no meaning to their lives. People suffer all around us. No doubt, we ourselves at times need to embrace the mystery of suffering. Perhaps the most difficult suffering of all is to lose someone, to have someone we love; a spouse, a parent, a sibling, a close friend, or God forbid, a daughter or a son die. 

There are no easy answers to suffering. One can read every theology book in the world and still be left with the question of suffering. There is a famous Austrian poet, he is dead now, Rainer Marie Rilke, who said this: “Sometimes we can only live with the questions, stay with them, mull them over in our mind. Perhaps slowly, over time, we gradually live into the answers.” 

The people living on the shores of the Sea of Galilee knew where to look in trying to understand the mystery of suffering. They looked to this simple, loving man from Nazareth. They learned from Jesus that God is in every place of pain and suffering. God is there. God is present. God has not abandoned the poor and pain-filled people of the world. 

But it is important to remember that our faith is not only a Good Friday faith. Good Friday leads to Easter Sunday. It leads to resurrection, to Christ, overcoming the bonds of death and being raised up by his Father in the Spirit, to life eternal with God the Father in heaven. We live that hope. The funeral Mass prayer sums it up: “There’s comes a time when every tear shall be wiped away and we shall see you, our God, as you are and become like you, and be with you, face to face.

Jesús nos invita a mí y a cada uno de Uds. que oyen a que seamos sal y luz de la tierra…MUSICA…Hace ya son los cincuenta y tres años que yo oí esta hermosa música tratando sobre este evangelio de hoy…MAS MUSICA…La música fue compuesta por Vicente y Rosi Morales y sus trece niños de un pueblito pequeño de España. Que se llama Huelva…La música de Vicente y Rosi y las bellas voces fueron Sal y Luz de Cristo para Huelva y pueblitos de España y muchos países de Hispanoamérica…Rosi falleció el julio pasado. Pero Vicente vive todavía…El grupo de sus 13 hijos se llama BROTES DE OLIVO. Hoy día siguen cantando y trayendo la luz y la sal de Jesús a pueblos de España y otros países. Uno de los trece hijos de Vicente nos dice esto sobre su labor musical: “Al cabo de los años, hemos constatado con gozo, y liberados de la responsabilidad de la historia, que el Mensaje está siempre por encima del mensajero. Y que por su enorme riqueza nos mantiene en búsqueda tras del rastro de Dios. ”…..Ahora les invito oír un trozo de Rosi y Chito del Brotes de Olivo cantando Nada Nos Separará del Amor de de Dios:

sal de la tierra será

mas si la sal se adultera

los hombres la pisarán

QUE SEA MI VIDA LA SAL

La gente oye a Jesús hablando con sabiduría y inteligencia. La misma gente ve a Jesús curando los cojos y sanando los enfermos. Pero a pesar y eso ellos dicen: ¿De dónde le viene esa sabiduría y ese poder para hacer milagros?. Tengo una familia muy amiga. Los dos son doctores en medicina: Daniel y Lisa. Tienen ocho hijos: dos varones y seis hembras. Daniel y Lisa vivieron en el Sur del Bronx, Nueva York. Se habían enamorados trabajando con las hermanas de quien es ahora Santa Teresa de Calcuta. Ya han pasado 30 años. Cada uno esos ocho hijos además de Daniel y Teresa se han enamorado de Jesús y María. Viven su fe en Dios, en Jesús y viven su amor de familia con un gozo que yo he podido palpar. Yo podría haber preguntado, al igual que esos vecinos de Jesús: ¿De dónde ha venido esa fe y ese amor para Jesús, para María, para la oración y Eucaristía? Pero más nunca haría esa pregunta. ¿Por qué?  Porque no sé muy bien donde ha venido esa fe y ese amor de Dios que brilla en Dan y en Lisa, en sus hijos y ahora nietos.  Viene del mismo lugar de donde Jesús sacó su sabiduría y su amor para la gente que sufre.  Viene del Espíritu Santo de Dios que estaba con Jesús siempre y sobre todo en el momento de su nacimiento. El mismo Espíritu Santo que llenó y guía a María desde su Inmaculada Concepción. El mismo Espíritu Santo que le prestó su fuerza y luz a  San José. Creo que nosotros mismos, sobre todo desde el momento de aceptar a Jesús como nuestro Divino Maestro y hermano mayor…recibimos desde el momento de nuestro Bautismo y Confirmación. Es mas recibimos en cada momento de oración, y sobre todo cuando recibimos a Jesús en la Eucaristía…recibimos todo el amor y toda la fuerza de Dios para crecer al igual que mis amigos Daniel y Lisa…crecer en la fe y el amor.  Así que cuando dejamos que Dios haga su obra de amor y bondad en nuestras vidas… ¿Saben Uds. lo que va a pasar?  Les digo. La gente, cuando ven nuestra fe, nuestro amor. Cuando ven la dulzura de Dios en nuestras vidas nos van a preguntar:  ¿Dónde aprendiste vivir así? Entonces les podemos compartir con ellos nuestro camino hacia Jesús, hacia esa fe y amor que ellos habrán visto en nosotros.

Hoy es la fiesta de un santo que luchó por el bien de los jóvenes sobre todos los que hoy día llamamos “niños de la calle.  Un cohermano redentorista de nosotros, Padre Patricio pasó toda su vida en Brasil ayudando esos niños abandonados y traviesos de las calles de Brasil. Nuestro Padre Patricio, al estilo del mismo San Juan Bosco tomó mu y en serio lo que dice Jesús hoy cuando dice esto: “¿Quién es el más grande en el Reino de los cielos?” Jesús llamó a un niño, lo puso en medio de ellos y les dijo: “Yo les aseguro a ustedes que si no cambian y no se hacen como los niños, no entrarán en el Reino de los cielos. En los años que viví yo en la Republica Dominicana conocía muchos buenos Salesianos y Salesianos. Ya que San Juan Bosco animó a María Mazzarello que fundara la Hijas de María Auxiliadora de Cristianos.      Nosotros los Misioneros Redentoristas al igual que los y las Salesianas nos fundamos en el siglo 17.  Hoy día los y las Salesianas siguen muy comprometidos a la juventud: varones y hembras. Porque, además de dirigir escuelas para enseñar gente profesional se preocupan sobre todo formar jóvenes enamorados de las personas de Jesús y María y los valores del evangelio.  Como dice hoy Pablo en su carta a los Filipenses: “..hermanos, aprecien todo lo que es verdadero y noble, cuánto hay de justo y puro, todo lo que es amable y honroso, todo lo que sea virtud y merezca elogio”…San Juan Bosco puso estas palabras en los corazones de los jóvenes. Mucha gente me ha dicho como ellos en las escuelas Salesianas llegaron a amar a Jesús y María al Estilo del mismo Juan Bosco. San Juan Bosco les enseñó a los jóvenes unir en sus vidas la fe, la Esperanza y la caridad…el amor. Los Salesianos hacen esto. A mi me gusto tomar el pelo de los Salesianos porque mientras que San Juan Bosco tenía una apariencia muy bien parecida. San Alfonso, fundador de nosotros los Redentoristas no tenía nada de apariencia elegante. Pero no siempre sabía al igual que los Salesianos que lo que atrae los jóvenes a vida religiosa o al sacerdocio son otros religiosos, religiosas y sacerdotes que brillan con el amor y la bondad de Dios. Amen. ¡¡Así Sea!!

• Fiesta de Santo Tomás de Aquino

Hoy celebramos la Fiesta de San Tomás de Aquino. Esa música es el primer verso de un himno Pange Lingua que habla de la Eucaristía, de la Presencia Real de Jesucristo el El Santo Sacramento. Antes de poner el último verso de Pange Lingua les quiero compartir unas cosas que Santo Tomás nos dice sobre esta Parábola del Sembrador que acabamos de oir. El Sembrador, claro, es Jesús mismo. Jesús salió de la casa de su Madre María para sembrar entre nosotros semillas de amor. Tomás cita el profeta Isaías porque dice: Jesús salió para sembrar a gente rica al igual que gente pobre, y a gente sabia al igual que gente necia. Porque al igual que había dicho el Profeta Isaías Jesús nos dice: Mis amados ¿Que mas podia yo haber hecho y no he hecho para Uds.?” Sobre la semilla pisoteada por el camino San Tomás nos dice es porque cayó en mentes llenas de pensamientos malos. Sobre la semilla caída sobre la roca San Tomás dice que es porque a veces gente deja que su corazón se endurezca. Pero es hermoso como San Tomás describe lo que es la tierra buena que produce abundancia de buenas frutas.  Tomás dice que es la gente que tiene su mente dulce y obediente a la palabra de Dios. Y sobre el calor del sol que seca y daña la palabra de Dios, San Tomás dice que son las persecuciones duras que la gente tristemente no resisten. San Tomás interpreta la profundidad de la tierra siendo mentes de personas que saben cuándo fuera necesario sufrir y resistir la maldad. La frase final de Jesús es para nosotros prestar la atención para poder ser esa buena tierra. Jesús dice: El que tenga oídos para oír, que escuche. Ahora escuchemos el verso final de Canta Lengua Gloriosa que es Pange Lingua en español.

January 21, 2026 – Memorial of Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr

Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Wednesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr.

Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to Mark.

Jesus entered the synagogue. There was a man there who had a withered hand. They watched Jesus closely to see if he would cure him on the sabbath so that they might accuse him. He said to the man with the withered hand, "Come up here before us." Then he said to the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" But they remained silent. Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, Jesus said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him to put him to death.

At the center of today’s gospel is Jesus’ question to the Pharisees: "Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" The question concerned the man with the withered hand. He was someone Jesus could help and to not help him, even on the sabbath, would be to do evil.

The whole purpose of the sabbath was to take time to give glory and praise to God. The whole purpose of Jesus’ life and ministry was to give glory and praise to God through his preaching and life-giving acts of healing, forgiveness and reconciliation. At his baptism by John, God had declared Jesus his beloved Son in whom he was well pleased. By healing the man with the withered hand, Jesus was being faithful to whom he was and gave glory to God.

The Pharisees probably had not witnessed Jesus’ baptism or heard the voice from heaven. They did not recognize Jesus as the beloved Son of God; they simply saw him as a miracle worker doing forbidden work on the sabbath. Their dedication to the law and their power of interpreting the law blinded them to the law of charity. In the end their sense of dedication and power made them unfaithful to the very law they were trying to protect.

In today’s first reading we hear the story of David’s defeat of the Philistine giant Goliath. In facing Goliath, David remained true to himself as a shepherd and to his faith in the God of Israel. By the grace of God, his sling and stone became more powerful than Goliath’s armor and sword.

David’s defeat of the braggart Goliath is thrilling, as is Jesus’ put-down of the smug Pharisees, but victory on the side of God often comes with a price. David would run afoul of king Saul’s jealousy and the Pharisees would take counsel with the Herodians to put Jesus to death. Nevertheless, Jesus remained faithful to God his Father all the way to the cross and resurrection.

We see the same in the life of St. Agnes, whose memory we celebrate today. She was a Virgin in the early Church who had pledged her life to Jesus Christ and believed in his promise of the resurrection. She preferred to serve the poor and attend to the widows and orphans in the Church than to get married. When the governor’s son proposed marriage to her, she replied that Jesus Christ was her only spouse. The young man denounced her to his father for being a Christian. She was true to herself and cheerfully accepted being beheaded rather than betray her spouse Jesus Christ. Her example is remembered and honored to this day.

Hopefully, none of us will have to face death for our faith in Jesus Christ, but there come moments in our lives when we have to choose between being true to ourselves as children of God by attending the needs of others or to give in to social pressure by excluding them from consideration. We celebrate the fact that the victory belongs to God who is always at our side and we ask St. Agnes to intercede for us that in those moments we place our trust in the God of mercy.

Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help

On a deeper level - and John’s writings always have many layers - the leper’s cleansing is a sign intended to point beyond the act itself. Turning water into wine, for example, or raising Lazarus from the tomb is meant to focus our attention more on the Doer rather than the deed. These events, as wonderful and extraordinary as they are, are meant to stir in us, in the words of scripture scholar E.A. Blum (1985), an active, continuous, and vital trust in Jesus. The man in the Gospel did not resign himself to suffering. He desired to be healed and sought out the only Person who could make it happen. 

It is the same Jesus today that healed the man on that Galilean road. It is the same Jesus who knows that we carry our burdens around for far too long. And the healing that Jesus offers does not stop with the physical. He also heals our emotional and spiritual isolation. We become light for others through the gift of believing that Jesus wants to make us whole. And it is not just some of us, it is all of us. 

Perhaps Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa and went on to become their President and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, said it best:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us the most. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? 

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. 

It is not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Les doy la bienvenida a "LA BUENA PALABRA", nuestro podcast diario en el que los Misioneros Redentoristas de la Provincia de Baltimore comparten la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Soy el Padre Manuel Rodríguez, redentorista, de la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

El evangelio de hoy, viernes 9 de enero de 2026, nos presenta a un leproso que se acerca a Jesús con una súplica humilde y profunda: "Señor, si quieres, puedes limpiarme.”

Este hombre no pide explicaciones por su enfermedad, no reclama derechos. Reconoce su sufrimiento, pero también reconoce el poder y la misericordia de Jesús. El ciego no duda de que Jesús puede sanarlo; deja en sus manos el querer. Ahí está el corazón de la fe.

La lepra, en tiempos de Jesús, no era solo una enfermedad física. Era una condena social, religiosa y espiritual. El leproso vivía aislado, excluido del culto, separado de la comunidad. En cierto modo, estaba “muerto en vida”. Es como una película que trataba de un condenado a la muerte en la silla eléctrica y lo llamaron, “hombre muerte caminando”, en inglés, “dead man walking”. Así eran los leprosos.  Por eso, su acercamiento a Jesús era un acto de valentía, pero, sobre todo, de esperanza.

Y Jesús hace algo escandaloso: extiende la mano y lo toca. Jesús no se limita a hablar desde lejos. Toca lo impuro, se acerca a quien nadie se acercaba. Con ese gesto, Jesús no solo sana el cuerpo del leproso; le devuelve la dignidad, lo reintegra en la comunidad y le devuelve la vida.

Luego Jesús dice: “Quiero, queda limpio.”

No es una sanación fría o automática. Es la expresión clara de la voluntad de Dios: Dios quiere la vida, la sanación y la restauración del ser humano.

Este evangelio nos invita a reconocer nuestras propias enfermedades, nuestras “lepra”: heridas interiores, pecados, resentimientos, miedos, situaciones que nos aíslan de los demás y de Dios. A veces, nos sentimos indignos, alejados, y no podemos acercarnos a nadie. Pero el leproso nos enseña el camino: ir a Jesús tal como estamos, con humildad y confianza.

Jesús sigue tocando hoy, especialmente en los sacramentos: la Eucaristía y la Reconciliación. Y sigue diciendo: “Quiero”. Él quiere perdonar, quiere sanar y quiere restaurar. ¿Por qué? Porque nos ama y donde hay amor, hay perdón. Los dos van de la mano: el amor y el perdón. No puede haber perdón sin amor, ni amor sin perdón.

Pidamos hoy la gracia de acercarnos a Jesús con fe sincera, de dejarnos tocar por su misericordia y de ser también instrumentos de su compasión para tantos “leprosos” de nuestro tiempo.

Hay personas que aman a los demás. Sobre todo, hay personas muy comprometidas con los pobres, olvidados, con los obreros explotados y perseguidos…pero son personas que sí han conocido a Jesús. Pero por varios motivos no se bautizan, ni se unen a ninguna iglesia cristiana. Una de esas personas fue la mujer Simone Weil, nacida en Francia de parientes judíos. Simone Weil vivió esta frase de la carta de Pablo que dicen: El que ama a Dios, que ame también a su hermano.  Y:” quien no ama a su hermano, a quien ve, no puede amar a Dios, a quien no ve.” …Simone vivía durante el final de la primera y al comienzo de la segunda guerra mundial. Ella vio el odio y la violencia de la guerra. Simone sentía un afecto especial por los pobres obreros. Con apenas los cinco años Simone dejó de usar azúcar porque ella sabía que los soldados franceses en la guerra no tenían nunca el azúcar. A pesar de ser una filosofa brillante que había sido profesora ella se fue a trabajar en una factoría de automóviles para sentir en carne y hueso el sufrimiento de los obreros. Ya que era corta de vista físicamente torpe se quemó las manos con aceite caliente. Cuando iba muriéndose en un hospital en Inglaterra no quería comen más que los soldados allá en su nativa Francia podía comer. 

Una vez Simone vio un joven en el momento de recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía.  Ella vio el rostro del joven brillante de gozo.  El joven le aconsejó a que ella recitara un poema sobre el Amor. Al hacer esto sus jaquecas de aliviaron. Simone dijo que fue en Aquel Momento que Jesús tomó posesión de ella.” Ella tenía los 29 años.

Un Domingo de Ramos Simone pasó en un Monasterio Benedictino. Sufría fuertes dolores de cabeza. Pero seguía Simone recitando una poesía sobre una persona que no se sentía merecedora del Amor. Pero en aquel momento Simone,  pensando en la Pasión de Cristo y los dolores del pueblo se sentía  ella abrumada por el amor de Cristo. Dijo ella que el pensamiento de la Pasión de Cristo entró el núcleo de su ser. 

Simone dijo que cristianismo es la religión de los esclavos. Creo yo que su amor para los pobres y para Cristo la logró una buena y santa comunión.

Hoy es la Fiesta de los Santos Reyes. Pero también hoy es la Fiesta de la Epifanía.  Los Tres Santos Reyes tuvieron una epifanía. Esto quiere decir que estudiando las Estrellas que fue la ciencia de ellos pues vieron una estrella. Y parece que Dios les ayudó entender que iba nacer un nuevo Rey en el pueblo de Israel. Así que ellos, los Tres Reyes iban de viaje para conocer este nuevo Rey.  El profeta Isaías tiene dos frases que parece hablan sobre esto. Dijo Isaías: Levántate y resplandece, Jerusalén, porque ha llegado tu luz y la gloria del Señor alborea sobre ti. También dijo Isaías: sobre ti resplandece el Señor y en ti se manifiesta su gloria. Hoy el evangelio de Mateo cita la pregunta de los reyes.  Dicen los reyes a Herodes: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”. En la segunda lectura hoy San Pablo nos habla sobre una epifanía que él mismo tenía que le hizo un siervo del mismo Jesús, Rey del mundo. Pablo nos dice esto: Por revelación se me dio a conocer este misterio, que no había sido manifestado a los hombres en otros tiempos, pero que ha sido revelado ahora por el Espíritu a sus santos apóstoles y profetas: La epifanía de Pablo, claro ocurrió muchos años después de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús.  Hermanas y Hermanos míos las palabras de Dios en las Sagradas Escrituras y momentos cuando palpamos el amor y la verdad y el mensaje de Jesús con una nueva y especial claridad, creo yo que esos momentos en nuestra vida son epifanías. Así como vamos comenzando este año nuevo yo oro que cada uno de Uds. y yo mismo sigamos, al igual que los Reyes, al igual que San Pablo sigamos teniendo nuevas epifanías que nos unen mejor a la persona y a la misión de Jesús

Hoy es el final del Año Presente. Pero esta noche es tiempo de esperar con esperanza un Año Nuevo. Yo, al decir ESPERAR CON ESPERANZA yo entiendo que, en el mundo de hoy, sobre en los barrios más pobres de todos los países hay mucha gente asustada y desesperada con esperan con temor, con miedo con terror a que caigan ellos en este año nuevo en más pobreza, más guerra, más amenazas de muerte.    El evangelio de Juan nos acaba de decir: Todas las cosas vinieron a la existencia por Cristo y sin él nada empezó de cuanto existe. Juan dice también:    De la plenitud de Cristo hemos recibido todos gracia sobre gracia. Pero sabemos que hay mucha gente que no cree esto.  Como dice Juan en este hermoso comienzo de su evangelio el “otro Juan”. O sea, Juan el Bautista había dicho que la luz era Cristo. Juan decía que él, Juan el Bautista, no era la luz. Porque el trabajo de Juan el Bautista fue señalarle a la gente la Persona de Cristo, de Jesús quien era la LUZ que con su vida, su amor, con sus palabras y dulzura iba iluminar el mundo. En esta víspera del Año Nuevo yo les invito orar, hablar y luchar a que la gente, sobre todo la gente en Ucranio, en Gaza, la gente y atormentados lugares del Sudán, y de los países más desesperados y pobres y mal tratados a que reciban esa plenitud que trajo Jesús pero sigue siendo una plenitud, una justicia, un trato justo que otras personas, sobre todo líderes injustos les siguen negando.  Que la plenitud de Cristo, su amor y justicia y trato justo lleguen a las manos, mejor dicho a las vidas de sus hijas e hijos más necesitados en el año mil  2026.

Hoy celebramos la Sagrada Familia de Jesús y su Madre María y su 

padre de crianza…Joseé.  Al igual que los niños matados por el Rey Herodes Jesús también fue un inocente ,un santísimo inocente. Hoy, dos días antes de celebrar el Nacimiento de Jesús, hoy en todas partes del mundo se están dejando de morir y hasta matando muchos niños inocentes. Niños y gente adulta, hijos de Dios igual que Adán igual que Moisés viven tantas personas víctimas del hombre, de la guerra y de miles otras amenazas a sus preciosas vidas.  A Jesús lo llamamos a veces el NUEVO MOISES.  Porque Jesús, al igual que Moisés escaparon los dos de la Muerte dos veces. Moisés huyó de Egipto. Jesús con sus papás huyó de la Muerte al mismo Egipto.  Cuando Moisés, por defender uno de su raza mató a un Egipto, el Faraón le buscó para matar. Pero de nuevo igual que como la hija del Faraón le había Salvado, Moisés por Segunda vez escape de la muerte.  Lo mismo le pasó a Jesús cuando por poco la gente de su mismo pueblo de Nazaret le quiso matar pensando un blasfemo. La Navidad, el nacimiento de Jesús en Belén la hemos celebrado hacen tres días atrás.  A pesar de nuestra alegría por su nacimiento nunca debemos olvidar el hecho que llegó el día, en el Viernes Santo cuando Jesús no se escapó de la muerte. Pero la Muerte de Jesús, igual que su nacimiento fue un regalo, un don para nosotros. Como dijo Jesús mismo: Nadie me quita la vida. Yo doy mi vida. El amor que Jesús tiene para nosotros. Ese gran amor es lo que no dejó que él huyera de la Muerte. Así Jesús es verdaderamente el NUEVO MOISES quien nos ama, no guía y nos lleva hacia la Nueva Vida. Lo que Moisés comenzó en el Mar Rojo Jesús lo llevó a cabo en el Calvario. La primera lectura nos enseña hoy como Podemos ser santas y sagradas familias.  Dice:  Puesto que Dios los ha elegido a ustedes, los ha consagrado a él y les ha dado su amor, sean compasivos, magnánimos, humildes, afables y pacientes. Esta fiesta nos reta a que oremos y luchemos a que cambien los corazones de los herodes y Faraones de hoy.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo Jesús,

Les doy la bienvenida a "LA BUENA PALABRA", nuestro podcast diario en el que los Misioneros Redentoristas de la Provincia de Baltimore comparten la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Soy el Padre Manuel Rodríguez, redentorista, de la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

Hoy es el 9 de diciembre del año 2025. Estamos en la temporada de Adviento. El Evangelio nos presenta al Buen Pastor que deja a las noventa y nueve para buscar a la oveja perdida. Esta imagen es perfecta para este momento del año, porque el Adviento no es solo nuestra espera por Dios: es la certeza de que Dios viene a buscarnos primero.

Todos, en algún momento, nos alejamos un poco de Dios y de la comunidad: sea por cansancio, distracciones (por ejemplo, el consumismo de este tiempo), preocupaciones diversas o por el pecado. Pero el Señor no se resigna. Él sale a nuestro encuentro, se acerca a nuestras oscuridades y nos llama por nuestro nombre. Eso es la Navidad que se acerca: un Dios que nos busca y no nos deja solos.

Jesús dice que el Padre del cielo no quiere que se pierda ni uno solo de estos pequeños. En Adviento, esta verdad nos invita a dos cosas:

1. Primero, dejarnos encontrar por Dios, permitir que Él cure nuestras heridas, renueve nuestra esperanza y anime nuestro regreso a nuestra familia y comunidad.

2. Segundo, buscar también a quienes están lejos: un hermano triste, un familiar herido, alguien que no se siente digno, un enfermo o un envejeciente que se siente solo.

Me hace pensar en varias personas que durante toda la semana no reciben ni una sola visita, excepto el Ministro de la Eucaristía, quien les lleva a Jesús en la hostia todos los domingos, y en la alegría que sienten con esta visita, especialmente al escuchar el toque a la puerta o el sonido del timbre. El Adviento nos pide tener un corazón que no se acostumbra a la ausencia de nadie. Tanto debemos entristecernos por la ausencia de un ser querido en nuestros encuentros familiares.

Que este tiempo nos prepare para recibir al Dios que viene a cargarnos sobre sus hombros y a traernos de regreso a la alegría.

“Not many of you were wise by human standards,

   not many were powerful,

   not many were of noble birth.

Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,

   and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong…” 

Juan Diego was not expecting anything special to happen to him as he was walking from his home to the Franciscan mission station for religious instruction. As his route passed by the hill at Tepeyac in the Sierra de Guadalupe Mountain Range, he encountered the Virgin Mary, who revealed herself to him as the ever-virgin Mother of God. He was instructed to request from the bishop that a chapel be erected in her honor so that she might relieve the distress of those who call upon her in their need. 

The bishop, as might be expected, did not initially go along with the plan. Bishop Juan Zumarraga asked Juan Diego to come back another day so the bishop would have time to reflect upon the request. Returning home, Juan encountered the Virgin again and announced the failure of his mission. Juan suggested the Blessed Mother ask someone of more importance to speak to the bishop, but she insisted that it was he, Juan Diego, that she wanted for the task. Juan returned to the bishop the next day, which was Sunday, December 10th, 1531. The bishop then asked Juan for some proof that this apparition was truly from heaven. 

Juan returned immediately to the hill at Tepeyac, and the Virgin met him again. She told Juan to return to the bishop and she would provide the proof needed. Overnight, however, Juan Diego’s uncle’s health had deteriorated to the point where Juan felt he had to get a priest to administer the sacraments. It was two days later that the Virgin met him on the road and gently admonished him for not trusting in her intercession. She instructed Juan to climb to the top of the mountain and bring her back some of the flowers that were growing there. He found the flowers, even though they were not in season and were not expected to be found on the rocky outpost where normally cactus and shrub only grew. He gathered them into his mantle and brought them back to Our Lady. She arranged the flowers and Juan set off to find the bishop. When he was allowed into the bishop’s presence, he opened the mantle of his cloak and when the flowers dropped out, what remained was an impression of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Lady of Guadalupe. 

In the words of the Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Our Lady “is the friend who is ever concerned that wine not be lacking in our lives. She is the woman whose heart was pierced by a sword and who understands our pain. As mother of all, she is a sign of hope for peoples suffering the birth pangs of justice…As a true mother, she walks at our side, she shares our struggles and she constantly surrounds us with God’s love.”

The words of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego after he missed their meeting due to his uncle’s illness could be addressed to everyone privileged to know her : “My youngest son, what is the matter? Do not let it disturb your heart. Am I not here, I who have the honor to be your mother?”

Cuando una familia me pide venir para bendecir su casa este es el evangelio que siempre leo para ellos. Porque una familia que oye y ama las palabras de Jesús tiene su casa, mejor dicho, tiene sus vidas puestas sobre la persona, el amor y sobre todo las palabras de Jesús. Hace tiempo mi amigo Padre Bill Gaffney, ya con el Señor, Padre Bill promovía el llamado Entronazimiento del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Al final de unos días de enseñanza sobre la persona y sobre las palabras y el amor de Jesús hubo el entronazimiento a la imagen del Sagrada Corazón de Jesús en un lugar de la casa de la gente. Pero lo mas importante del entronazimiento no fue tanto la imagen del Sagrado Corazón, hermoso como fuera sino el hecho que la familia hizo del interior de su casa o de su apartamento UN LUGAR SAGRADO DE FE Y DEL AMOR PARA DIOS. Fue el entronazimiento un compromiso firme y sagrado de mantener el interior de su casa o de su apartamento un lugar donde fe en Dios y la vivencia de sus mandamientos no se lastimaba nunca, ni por nada ni nadie.  Nada de drogas! Nada de pornografía. Nada de malas palabras ni odio ni insultos. Fue cuestión como dice el evangelio de hoy de todos en la casa y todos que fueran a entrar la casa de mantener sus vidas, sus palabras y sus conductas sobre la roca que es la persona de Jesús. Jesús cuya primera venida recordamos durante este tiempo de Adviento y cuya segunda venida esperamos dentro de nuestras casas entregadas a sus palabras y a sus hermosas promesas.

Quiero hacer comentario sobre lo que Jesús nos dice hoy cuando dice esto: Podrán dejar de existir el cielo y la tierra, pero mis palabras no dejarán de cumplirse". El domingo próximo  empezamos el tiempo de Adviento.. tiempo de esperanza . Por eso quiero que oigan unas palabras que dice Jesús en la última Cena. Con todas las guerras y confusión y temor que vive el mundo en estos días quiero que es bueno que oigamos unas palabras que Jesús dijo poco antes de enseñarnos su gran amor en la cruz. Espero que esas palabras de Jesús, como él mismo nos dice, se vayan cumpliéndose en estos días en mi vida y en la tuya también:”Si yo, su señor y maestro he lavado sus pies uds. deben lavarse los pies los unos de los otros”…..”Yo les he dado un ejemplo para seguir para que lo que he hecho yo uds también deben hacer”…..”Les doy un mandamiento nuevo: ámense los unos a los otros”….. “Como yo les he amado, así uds. deben amarse los unos a los otros”….”Así todos sabrán que uds. son mis discípulos, si tienen amor los unos para los otros”… “Jesús le dijo: Yo soy el camino, la Verdad y la vida”…… “Nadie viene al Padre sino por mi”. ……”Quienquiera tiene mis mandamientos y los obedece es quien me ama”……”Y quienquiera me ama el Padre le amará y yo le amaré y me revelaré a él”…….” Quiero yo que  estas palabras de Jesús sigan siendo vivas en la vida mia y  en la tuya y que vaya siendo nuestro mundo de un lugar de menos guerra, odio y rencor y que sea un lugar que  refleja mejor cada día el Dios amoroso que lo ha creado y quien lo ama tanto.

Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Thursday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to Luke.

Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, saying to them, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.

The celebration of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in Jerusalem in the 6th century and then slowly spread through the Christian world. The story does not come from the Bible, but is based on a third century document that tries to fill in the blanks in the lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, that are not told in the Gospels. It is a devotional work and can be fanciful at times. The story of Joachim and Ana presenting Mary in the Temple in Jerusalem at three years old is based on the Old Testament account of Samuel’s presentation in the Temple and expresses the truth of Mary’s giving herself in service to God.

This brings us to today’s readings, where in the gospel, we hear of Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple by driving out those who were selling things, saying to them, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” Once he had restored the sacred space of the Temple, Jesus began to teach the people there.

The first reading from the first book of Maccabees has a similar message. After Judas and his brothers had driven out the pagan invaders who had profaned the Temple, they purified and rededicated the Temple, so that sacrifices could once again be offered to God. This is the origin of the feast of Hanukkah, which the Jewish people celebrate to the present day.

From this we see the necessity of a sacred space where the faithful can safely gather to worship and offer prayers to God. Of course, our heart is the first sacred space, where we offer ourselves to God in obedience to the commandments of love of God and love of neighbor. But it is difficult to love our neighbor if we do not first pray for and with our neighbor. And in the busyness and noise of our daily lives, we need churches and temples to help us create the space where our hearts feel the presence of God and find the peace to speak to God.

The presentation of Mary teaches us that she learned at an early age to open her heart to God and participate in the sacred space that was the Temple. This forms the basis for her receptivity to the message of the angel in the annunciation and her response: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Just as Mary learned as a child to respond to God’s calling, the children of our Christian community need to do the same. How do we bring up children to recognize God and revere the sacred spaces? One way is for parents to teach them their prayers and to pray with them. Another is for the children to accompany the family to church from the time they are little. Mary grew up in a devout and faith filled family. Today’s children should have the same opportunity.

Cuando y era un sacerdote de apenas veintisiete años traje la Santa Comunión a Quintín Nieves. Quintín fue un hombre pobre que vivía en un Campo. Antes y después de yo orar con Quintín y darle el Cuerpo de Cristo, la Santa Comunión Quintín me dio muchos consejos. Me aconsejaba seguir puro y orar mucho. Tocó algo para mi con su pequeño mandolín. Quintín era una de muchas personas que Dios puso en mi vida para ayudarme crecer en la fe, la esperanza y a caridad como buen sacerdote Redentorista. Quintín para mí para este ya joven Padre Martín era uno de los que San Pablo llama mi nube de testigos. Quiere decir esto que Quintín para mí fue un instrumento de Dios para acercarme mas al corazón de Jesús.  Esto fue el motivo de yo leer ese trozo de la carta de San Pablo a los Romanos. Porque Pablo nombra y saluda nueve personas que fueron personas que le ayudaron vivir y predicar la fe en Jesús: en a Prisca y a Aquila, Epéneto, María, Andrónico y a Junías, Ampliato, Eustaquio. Entonces Tercio que escribía la carta, Tercio saluda y nombra otros ocho personas Stachys, Apelles, la familia de Aristóbulo.,Herodion. La familia de Narcisso.  Tryphaena , Persis,  y

 Rufus,* A lo mejor tú que oye mis palabras tienes, al igual que yo, varias personas como era para mi Quintín Nieves allá en aquella loma dando me consejos que me han ayudado perseverar como hijo de Dios, como amado de Jesús y de nuestra madre común María. Les invito a que durante el día de hoy vayas pensando en todas las personas que te ayudan conocer, amar y seguir a Jesús vivir mejor su mensaje de esperanza. Dale gracias por tus propia nube de testigos.

La frase de este evangelio que mas profundamente me toca el corazón es cuando Jesús nos dice: "Dichoso aquel que participe en el banquete del Reino de Dios".   El banquete del Reino de Dios es la Santa Misa. Y como el amo se sentía tan triste por los que no vinieron su Fiesta creo yo que Jesús hoy día se siente triste por los que no vienen a participar en la Sagrada Eucaristía.  Dentro de quizás un año más  del alguien decir estas palabras a Jesús, pues Jesús y estos mismos discípulos iban a sentarse a una mesa de nuevo. Será una celebración de la Pascua Judía. Fue esa Cena lo que llamamos la ULTIMA CENA de Jesús con sus discípulos. Aquella noche lo iban a capturarle a Jesús sus enemigos en el Huerto de Getsemaní para luego llevarle a la muerte en el Calvario. Pero Jesús les dice que va a ser una Nueva Cena. Jesús en esa Cena les dice: “Con gran ansiedad he querido comer esta Pascua con Uds. antes de sufrir, porque les digo: No volveré a comerla de nuevo hasta que se cumpla en el Reino de Dios.” Sabemos que después de Jesús resucitó de la muerte volvió a ver a sus discípulos y con mucha alegría volvieron a sentarse a la mesa juntos de nuevo. Lamentablemente Judas Iscariote que le había traicionado a Jesús ya no estaba con ellos. Cosa muy triste.  Para nosotros Cristianos la Mesa de Jesús, la Mesa del Reino Nuevo es la misma Santa Eucaristía… La Santa Misa.  Uds. y yo conocemos muchas personas, quizás en nuestras propias familias que antes sentaba con nosotros en la Eucaristía la Misa Dominical para alimentarse del Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesús. Pero ahora, muchas veces por motivos que desconocemos han dejado de participar en la Eucaristía y han dejado de alimentarse del Pan del Cielo que es la propia persona de Jesús.  Hace unos meses hice yo unos 33 días de reflexiones antes de consagrarme de nuevo para amar de forma mas intensa a Jesús en la Santa Eucaristía. Un libro en español para eso. Le llama 33 Días Hacia la Consagración Eucarística   y su autor es un hombre de Australia llamado Matthew Kelly. La palabra de Dios hoy nos invita orar a que personas que hayan dejado participar en la Eucarística vuelvan a ella y personas que todavía no hayan llegado conocer y participar en la Sagrada Eucarística la descubran y la amen.

Les quiero decir algo sobre la tristeza de San Pablo. Como sabemos Pablo llegó a conocer a Jesús cuando fue tumbado de su caballo. Iba Pablo en aquel momento para capturar y poner en la cárcel personas que conocían y seguían a Jesús. Como sabemos Pablo al caer de su caballo se puso ciego. Pero Pablo oyó la misma voz de Jesús. Jesús le dijo a Pablo: “Pablo, Pablo. ¿Por qué me persigues? Entonces desde aquel momento Pablo conoció a Jesús. Pablo comenzó a seguirle a Jesús. Además Pablo desde aquel momento comenzó a compartir con sus hermanos Judíos como él había llegado a conocer y amar a Jesús.  Unos le creyeron y también conocían y seguían a Jesús. Pero una gran mayoría de sus hermanos judíos no aceptaron a Jesús. Por eso en la lectura que les acabo de leer de su carta de Pablo a los Romanos Pablo expresa su tristeza. Dice estas palabras emotivas: “tengo una infinita tristeza y un dolor incesante tortura mi corazón. Hasta aceptaría verme separado de Cristo, si esto fuera para bien de mis hermanos, los de mi raza.” Pablo mas nunca rechazó ni mucho menos condenó sus hermanos judíos. Jesús mismo fue así. Porque en el evangelio de hoy Jesús cura un hombre de una fuerte enfermedad nerviosa del cuerpo. Pero a pesar de Jesús hacer esta amorosa curación algunos de quejan porque dice que fue malo sanar una persona en lo que hoy para nosotros sería el domingo.  Jesús nos enseña siempre que la COSA MAS IMPORTANTE ES AMOR A DIOS SOBRE TODAS LAS COSAS Y AMAR AL PROJIMO…y amar a los pobres y enfermos todos los días de la semana y todos los días del año entero.  Creo yo que la palabra de Dios hoy, el día antes de la fiesta de Todos los Santos es que, al igual que Jesús, al igual que Pablo, al igual que todos los santos amemos a Dios y a los pobres con todos nuestros corazones.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de Simón y Judas. Digo Judas el que siguío a Jesús al final. A veces le llamamos Judas Tadeo para distinguirlo del otro Judas…Iscariote quien, a pesar de ser amado y escogido por Jesús llegó a traicionarle a Jesús. Cosa, por suerte muy triste. Simón el otro apóstol que celebramos hoy tenía el apodo “el Fanático”.  Esto porque antes de ser llamado por Jesús, Simón le pertenecía a un grupo llamado Los Celosos porque usaban violencia para poder acabar con el imperio romano. Simón dejó eso. Simón siguió a Jesús quien llegó a ser en el Calvario víctima de la violencia. Ambos: Simón y Judas Tadeo al igual que los demás apóstoles. Seguían a Jesús que llamamos el Príncipe de la Paz. El evangelio hoy habla del momento cuando Jesús, después de una noche de oración con su querido Abba Celestial, Jesús escoge a Simón, a Judas Tadeo, al mismo Judas Iscariote y los demás nueve para seguirle y ser como dice lo que leí de San Pablo en su Carta a los Efesios…” la familia de Dios, edificada sobre el cimiento de eso mismos 12 apóstoles y  los profetas, para que ellos fueran con Cristo siendo la piedra angular…..lo que llamamos LA IGLESIA.  San Pablo habla con palabras que se parecen a la construcción de una casa o un edificio. Pero, como San Pablo nos dice somos en Cristo un Cuerpo Humano e Divino en Cristo. Pablo llama Simón y Judas Tadeo y los demás apóstoles…EL CEMENTO. Diría yo que nosotros unidos a Cristo y a los apóstoles somos el CEMENTO HUMANO DE DIOS. Como Pablo dice con estas palabras potentes: FORMAMOS el templo santo del Señor, y unidos a él también ustedes se van incorporando al edificio, por medio del Espíritu Santo, para ser morada de Dios.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants."

Homily

In the gospel we hear Jesus tell his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.” The master, of course, is Jesus himself who comes knocking at our hearts. We open our hearts, by welcoming him into our lives and trying to live in radical obedience to the Father as he did, repeating with him in today’s Psalm: “To do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!”

Jesus taught that the Law can be summed up as Love of God and Love of Neighbor. Or, as John the Evangelist interprets it, “Love one another as I have love you.” Jesus is the expression of God the Father’s love and mercy toward every human being.

Jesus’ life was service to others. When his disciples argued among themselves over authority, he told them: “let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. ... I am among you as the one who serves.” He always had time to attend the sick, to cast out demons and make people whole. He accepted dinner invitations from the Pharisees, and he also visited the homes of outcasts, like tax collectors and people considered sinners. He brought the good news of salvation to all, not just in word, but also in deed; and he asks the same of us. As we hear in the parable of the last judgment: “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

When Jesus comes knocking at the door of our hearts, he does so through other people who call on us in their need. Because of our human limitations, there will be times we can do little, but we must respect the humanity of the one in front of us. In our present polarized society this can be difficult. We are constantly being bombarded by messages that dehumanize certain groups for political purposes, and we may find it frightening to stand up for the gospel message of love and mercy as disciples of Jesus Christ.

St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans tells us not to fear, because Jesus has already won the battle. Comparing Adam and Jesus, he declares: “If by that one person's transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.” We may have to face our moments of failure, but we can rise above our sinfulness, because “Where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more, so that, ... grace might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

There is a joy that awaits those who are faithful in opening the doors of their hearts to the poor and marginalized. Jesus says that “he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.” This is an image of the heavenly banquet, but it all begins here. The love and welcome we share in this life carries over into eternal life. It sounds like one great party. May we all meet there.

Cuando los discípulos de Jesús de piden: “Señor, enséñanos a orar” Jesús les enseña el Padre Nuestro.  El Padre Nuestro dice esto: “perdona nuestras ofensas, puesto que también nosotros perdonamos a todo aquel que nos ofende”. Jesús, ya que es el mismo Hijo de Dios, sabe mas que bien que Dios es llenísimo de la bondad y la misericordia.  El mismo salmo responsorial de hoy nos habla sobre la misericordia de Dios cuando nos dice esto: “Tú, Señor, eres bueno y clemente.  Ten compasión de mí, pues clamo a ti, Dios mío, todo el día. En la primera lectura de hoy nos dice que Dios le envió a Moisés para la gente pecadora de Nínive.  Jonás mismo sabía bien sobre la misericordia de Dios. Porque cuando Dios le pregunta por qué no había predicado a la gente de Nínive Jonás le dice esto a Dios: “Bien sabía yo que tú eres un Dios clemente y compasivo, lleno de paciencia y de misericordia, siempre dispuesto a perdonar”.  Parece mentira, pero Moisés no enoja por la misericordia que Dios quiere darle a la gente de Nínive. La palabra de Dios hoy a mi y a todos nosotros nos pide pensar en personas en el mundo entero, personas que causan guerras y hambre y dolor y otras personas, por ejemplo en Gaza, en el Sur de  Sudán en África. La palabra de Dios nos invita unir nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones con la bondad y con la misericordia de Dios quien es Nuestro Padre, Nuestro Hermano Mayor y Salvador. Jesús y es el mismo Espíritu Santo de Dios que viven todas ellas en cada uno de nosotros.

Paz y Bien…Santa Alegría!!  Dicen algunos que este saludo viene del mismo San Francisco de Asís cuya fiesta celebramos hoy. Puede ser que algunos de Uds. traerán sus mascotas: perros, gatos y otros animales para que los padres de tu parroquia los bendigan hoy. Viene o no viene este saludo del mismo San Francisco sabemos que él era un hombre, un santo hombre lleno de la paz y la misma alegría de Jesús. El evangelio de hoy dice esto: En aquella misma hora, Jesús se llenó de júbilo en el Espíritu Santo y exclamó: "¡Te doy gracias, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has escondido estas cosas a los sabios y a los entendidos, y las has revelado a la gente sencilla!  Entonces Jesús les dice esto:Alégrense más bien de que sus nombres están escritos en el cielo". En su famoso canto Cántico al Sol San Francisco habla de Sus Hermanos: Sol, Luna, Viento, Agua Fuego y de su Hermana Madre Tierra. Porque Francisco sabía que todos que nos atraen a Dios, todas las cosas de la tierra que nos animan a vivir en Santa Comunión con Dios y en santa y alegre y generosa santa comunión con los demás pues son todas esas cosas motivos de Paz y de Bien para nosotros.  Además de todo eso San Francisco habla de la Hermana Muerte. Porque la muerte es para los que hemos amado y seguido a Jesús la Muerte es para nosotros la PUERTA hacia la Paz y Bien y la Santa Alegría con Dios.

Como sabrán Uds. que nos conocen a nosotros los Redentoristas nuestro lema o consigna: EN CRISTO HAY ABUNDANTE REDENCIÓN. San Alfonso nos fundó para predicar la Palabra de Dios a los pobres. Eso mismo hemos hecho desde nuestro inicio hacen casi 300 año atrás en las lomas del Sur de Italia. Predicamos la palabra de Dios a los pastores de ovejas y chivos o cabras. San Alfonso nos animó a vivir cerca de los pobres y a vivir de una forma sencilla y humilde. La historia del Hombre Rico y el pobre Lázaro habla de lo que el evangelio llama “un abismo inmenso” o un barranco en Lázaro en el cielo y el rico condenado al infierno.  Porque cuando Lázaro le pide a Abrahán que le dejara cruzar para estar con él y con Lázaro, Abrahán le dice que hay aquel inmenso abismo o diría yo un profundo barranco que no se puede cruzar nadie. Pero acá en la tierra podemos cruzar los que tienen hacia los pobres que no tienen. El gran Sobre esta historia del pobre Lázaro y el rico tacaño nos dice quién fue el Papa Gregorio :Los Lazaros pobres están frente a nosotros todos los días. Ellos necesitan los alimentos que diariamente caen de nuestras mesas. ..Diariamente vemos al Lázaro si es que lo buscamos. Los pobres siempre están a nuestro lado…... Un ejemplo muy urgente de eso es la situación de la buena gente de Gaza. Muchos países del mundo, incluyendo mi propio país no ven a Lázaro en la gente inocente de Gaza que están muriendo del hambre y del rechazo porque hay personas y naciones enteras al igual que el Rico Epulón del Evangelio. No ven los Lázaros de Gaza con amor, respeto y compasión. Les invito oír las palabras que Pablo le dice a Timoteo hoy cuando le dice: Tú, como hombre de Dios, lleva una vida de rectitud, piedad, fe, amor, paciencia y mansedumbre. Lucha en el noble combate de la fe, conquista la vida eterna a la que has sido llamado.¨

Our reading today is from the holy gospel according to Luke

Jesus said to his disciples, "A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.' The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.' He called in his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?' He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.' Then to another the steward said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.' The steward said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.' And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.

"For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."

Homily

The parable in today’s gospel is not a homey metaphor we often expect from Jesus’ parables. It is a brutal presentation of class exploitation and an example of the lengths to which an unscrupulous person will go for self-preservation. Still, Jesus is able to find a positive message in the actions of the unjust steward and bemoans the fact that those dedicated to the kingdom of God are not as single-minded.

We need to understand that the size of the debts in the parable was very large and would be difficult to pay back. The steward had erred in allowing his master’s clients to accumulate such large debts. And then, to ingratiate himself with those same clients, he reduces their debts, also by large amounts. We can imagine the shock and joy on the faces of the debtors as their debts were written down. More difficult is imagining the face of the master. He could have lost money, but overnight his reputation had gone from Mr. Scrooge to Santa Claus. The townspeople would be telling everyone what a good guy he was. And in Jesus’ neighborhood, that kind of capital was worth more than the money.

The point Jesus was trying to make is that even an unjust steward can be good to his neighbors, when his own life is on the line; and he questions why it is so difficult for his disciples to be good to one another, when eternal life is on the line?

Jesus seems to be saying that the goods of this earth are to be used in building up and caring for one another, and if we cannot learn the proper use of the goods of the earth, how will we ever learn to use the spiritual goods of God’s kingdom?

Taking advantage of one another seems to be rooted in our human nature since the fall of Adam and Eve. In the first reading, the prophet Amos condemns those “who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!” Even though they kept the Sabbath and the holy days, they were anxious for them to be over, so that they could get back to making a profit. And yet we admire people like Mother Theresa of Calcutta and Dorothy Day for their dedication to serving the poor. Jesus tells us that admiration is not enough; we need to imitate their virtue.

In the second reading, Saint Paul gives us one of the roads to the goods of the kingdom: Prayer. “Beloved: I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.” We must ask God for the graces of justice, kindness and mercy for our leaders as well as for ourselves. And he continues: “It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.” And then we must set about turning into reality the things that we have prayed for, serving not so much the world, as our fellow pilgrims in the world.

For, as Jesus said: “No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."

En el Evangelio de hoy, el sábado, 9 de septiembre de 2025, según San Lucas, capítulo 6, versos 12 al 19, nos presenta a Jesús en un momento decisivo: la elección de los Doce Apóstoles. No fue una decisión improvisada. San Lucas subraya que Jesús pasó la noche entera en oración, en diálogo con su Padre Dios, antes de elegirlos.

Este detalle nos enseña algo muy importante: las decisiones fundamentales de la vida no se toman a la ligera, ni solamente con la cabeza, ni movidos por sentimientos del momento, es decir, el corazón. Las decisiones de vida comienzan con la oración. Una oración especial que se hace usando la cabeza y el corazón, es decir, la cabeza (la razón) y el corazón (los sentimientos) armonizados. 

Y estas decisiones significativas de la vida, se toman de rodillas, poniéndonos en oración, buscando la voluntad de Dios. Si Jesús, quien es el Hijo de Dios, rezaba -- cuánto más nosotros, que somos frágiles, y necesitados, debemos orar antes de cada paso decisivo.

Luego, al amanecer, Jesús llama a sus discípulos y elige a doce. Este número recuerda a las doce tribus de Israel: con este gesto, Jesús está fundando el nuevo Pueblo de Dios, la Iglesia, que se extenderá hasta los confines de la tierra. Y los que escogió Jesús no eran perfectos: entre ellos hay pescadores de poca cultura, un publicano mal visto por la gente, y hasta Judas, que lo traicionaría. Esto nos recuerda que la Iglesia no está formada por santos impecables, sino por pecadores llamados y enviados por pura gracia.

Pidamos hoy al Señor:

·       Que sepamos orar antes de cada decisión importante y

·       Que, como los Apóstoles, aceptemos ser llamados aún reconociendo y con nuestras debilidades y limitaciones. Amén.

St. Peter’s life’s work as a Jesuit priest was helping the men and women who arrived sick, exhausted, and maltreated to the port city of Cartagena. He would meet the ships upon their arrival and go down into the holds where the human cargo was packed tightly together. It is estimated that one third of the men and women died in transit. Peter would carry medicine, food, bread, and lemons to those who survived. He attended to their human needs first and then, over time, tried his best to meet their spiritual needs. 

Peter also preached the Gospel message to the merchants, sailors, and ship owners. He tried to impress upon them that we are all human beings and that we have a common need to be treated with dignity and respect. When he visited the plantations where the African slaves were working, he would stay with them rather than in the comfortable homes of the landowners. He preached in the city squares, country areas, and was often among the sick in the hospitals. Fellow Jesuit Fr. John Hardon could have been reflecting on the life of Peter Claver when he wrote: “Love is shown more in deeds than in words. Love does not mean that I like doing what I’m doing, love means that I do it, and the doing is your love.”   

Over the course of his life, the conservative estimate is that Peter baptized 300,000 people - and he continued his instructions after they were baptized by distributing holy pictures and having translators help him to preach. He heard 5,000 confessions on a yearly basis.

It should be no surprise that his last years were filled with ill health. Unable to leave his room, his community assigned an ex-slave to attend to his needs. Unfortunately, this man mistreated Fr. Claver and stole his food. Peter did not complain, seeing his ill treatment as a penance for his sins. When he died on September 8, 1654, word spread quickly. People came from all over the countryside to visit his room, which was soon stripped of everything that might be considered a relic. His life was such a heroic example of the Christian praxis of love and the exercise of human rights that September 9th, the day after Peter’s death, is celebrated today in Columbia as Human Rights Day.

Hoy celebramos el Nacimiento de la Virgen María, Madre de Jesús. El evangelio nos habla de … María, de la cual nació Jesús, llamado Cristo.

Cristo quiere decir..”el ungido” o el mesías, el enviado de Dios. Por eso en la genealogía de Jesús nos dice hoy. Esto. Jesucristo, hijo de David, hijo de Abraham. Porque Jesús, como todos los Israelitas fue de la familia de Abrahán. Pero Jesús como hijo de Dios nació también de la familia del Rey David. Esta fiesta de hoy, el Nacimiento de María, la madre Jesús, la celebramos precisamente nueve meses después de la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Fiesta del día ocho de diciembre. Porque creemos que María, por obra de Dios, obra del Espirito Santo, María nació sin la mas mínima mancha del pecado. Además María antes, después el nacimiento de Jesús se quedaba inmaculada. Pura y totalmente de la belleza y dulzura de la Santísima Trinidad que la había escogido ser Madre del Redentor. Sobre la vida de María antes de ser visitada por el ángel Gabriel las Sagradas Escrituras no dice nada. Pero la tradición Católica tiene gran respeto por una obra que se llama el Proto Evangelio de Santiago…Allá se habla de Ana y Joaquín como los papás de María. Hay muchos detalles muy hermosos aunque no son artículos de nuestra fe católica. Por ejemplo el Proto Evangelio dice que Ana y Joaquín, al igual que Abrahán y Sara sufrieron por ser viejos sin tender todavía ni un hijo. Dice este Proto Evangelio de Santiago que Ana y Joaquín, muy parecido a lo que iban a ser su propia hija, María y José muchos años después. Dice que:Joachim trajo el niño a los sacerdotes. Ellos la bendijeron diciendo esto: O Dios de nuestros padres bendiga esta niña y dale un nombre Eterno que sea nombrado en todas las generaciones futuras. O Dios Eterno mira sobre esta niña y bendígala con una bendición que durará para siempre. Y digo yo, Padre Martín: Santísima Trinidad: Padre, Hijo Jesús (nacida de María) y Espíritu Santo háganos muy agradecidos por Jesús y por su mamá María cuyo nacimiento celebramos hoy.

Cuando Pedro ve la enorme cantidad de peces se siente lleno de asombro. Pedro se siente muy indigno de estar cerca de una persona tan maravillosa como es Jesús. Por eso le grita a Jesús: “Apártate de mi Señor. Soy un pecador”..Pero Jesús no le hace caso. Al contrario, le dice a Pedro esto: "No temas; desde ahora serás pescador de hombres". Pedro comienza aprender que eso mismo es estilo Jesús. Porque para Jesús, para Dios somos todos nosotros los amados hijos de su Padre Celestial. Claro que Pedro fue pecador. Uds. y yo también. Pero eso no es lo que importa. Pedro iba ver a Jesús acercándose a pecadores días y noches. Porque Jesús poco después llama el pecador y cobrador Mateo para ser también un pescador de hombres. Jesús se acerca a la mujer samaritana. Otra pecadora. Al comienzo toqué unos versos del canto NO SOY DIGNO de la Hermana Glenda. Porque para Jesús no es cuestión de ser o no ser pecador. No es cuestión de merecer nada. La misión de Jesús es una misión de la MISERICORDIA.  Jesús sabía, creo yo, que el mismo Pedro lo iba a negar. Jesús también sabía que todos los discípulos lo iban a abandonar cuando lo agarraron en el Huerto de Getsemaní. Hace muchos años hice yo los llamados Ejercicios Espirituales de San Ignacio de Loyola. Cuando una persona hace los Ejercicios Espirituales uno de los fines de ello es de reconocer y dejar cualquier idea equivocada de Dios. Pedro conoció a Jesús como un hombre de la misericordia. Por eso Pedro pasó esos tres años con Jesús amando y llamando a los demás, pecadores y todos…a recibir y a vivir la libre y gratuita MISERICORDIA DE DIOS. Les voy a oír el final de la Hermana Glenda cantando NO SOY DIGNO DE ENTRAR EN TU CASA

Jesús nos invita tomar el último lugar. Eso mismo es lo que Hizo Jesús. Jesús tomó el último lugar para estar acá contigo y con nosotros. Mas que eso Jesús tomó y Jesús sigue tomando el último lugar con la gente mas pobre, mas olvidada. Jesús siempre toma el lugar con los pobres, con la gente mas olvidada, con la gente mas abusada y agredida. Por eso Jesús, ahora mismo sufre y piensa mucho en la gente d Gaza, del Ucranio. Jesús desea estar con la gente muriendo del hambre en lugares como el Sur de Sudán en África y en Gaza en esa tierra santa donde hace dos mil años Jesús nació pobre..en el último lugar que fue un establo de Belén

San Alfonso que fundó los Redentoristas quería que nosotros que íbamos a trabajar con él..que nosotros también, al igual que Jesús, que nosotros fuéramos siempre a los últimos lugares. San Alfonso quería que nosotros, los Misioneros Redentoristas viviéramos y predicáramos su palabra de amor y perdón a gente mas pobre, a la gente mas olvidada, a la gente mas explotada y maltratada.  Yo personalmente no puedo hacer mas que esto por mi edad, 86 años y por mis pulmones débiles. Pero me lleno de gozo al saber que nuestros miembros siguen viviendo en los lugares mas remotos del mundo. Por ejemplo, tenemos un miembro, Padre Mike que trabaja en los cárceles de Carolina del Sur.  Muchos de nuestros miembros son de Vietnam donde a pesar del rechazo del gobierno siguen viviendo la palabra de Jesús. Uno de ellos, Padre  Peter Vang Cong Tran va cada año al lugar mas pobre del Norte de Vietnam donde vive la gente mas pobre de su país. Traen con ellos, además de la palabra de Dios cosas que la gente casi no tiene. Una jovencita se fascinó una vez, como ella le dijo al Padre Peter su, dijo ella “al buen olor de él”. Fue sencillamente del jabón que su gente casi no tenía.  San Alfonso nos formó para buscar los lugares mas, diría yo “más últimos” donde vive la gente mas necesitada de fe, de amor, de la palabra de Dios y, digo yo de buen jabón también.  Recen mucho para nosotros los Redentoristas nos quedemos fieles a la misión que San Alfonso no dejó.

Hoy la Iglesia celebra la vida de San Agustín. Hasta que tenía treinta años y conoció a Jesús Agustín era un gran pecador. Era muy inteligente y brillante, pero vivía una vida muy desordenada. Pero cuando Agustín llegó a conocer a Jesús, a amarle a Jesús. Sobre todo, cuando Agustín comenzó a seguirle a Jesús, pues Agustín llegó a ser , diría yo, un gigante de la fe y el amor de Jesús. Antes de conocer a Jesús Agustín yo estaba nada como los que velan y están preparados para el Señor. Antes de conocer a Jesús y amarle a Jesús, Agustín no estaba nada como el servidor fiel y prudente de quien nos habla Jesús en este evangelio. Sobre su vida antes de conocer a Jesús Agustín dijo estas bellas palabras. Dijo: Tarde te amé, hermosura tan antigua y tan nueva, ¡tarde te amé! y tú estabas dentro de mí y yo afuera, y así por de fuera te buscaba; y, deforme como era, me lanzaba sobre estas cosas que tú creaste. Tú estabas conmigo, pero yo no estaba contigo. Reteníanme lejos de ti aquellas cosas que, si no estuviesen en ti, no existirían. Me llamaste y clamaste, y quebraste mi sordera; brillaste y resplandeciste, y curaste mi ceguera;

exhalaste tu perfume, y lo aspiré, y ahora te anhelo; gusté de ti, y ahora siento hambre y sed de ti; me tocaste, y deseo con ansia la paz que procede de ti.

August 21, 2025 – Memorial of Saint Pius X, Pope

Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Thursday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of Pope Saint Pius X.

A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew.

           Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying, “The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast,

but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

           Then the king said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Homily

Our readings today begin with the joy of living in God’s grace, but end with a sad commentary on fruits of human pride and weakness. In the first reading we begin with the warrior judge Jephthah and his successful campaign to free the tribes of Israel from their enemies; and in the gospel we just heard, Jesus compares the Kingdom of heaven to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.

Wedding feast are usually joyful occasions; they certainly are in my family. And we enjoy getting together on other occasions to share food and each other’s company.

Jesus was no different. He often accepted invitations to dine with saints and sinners alike. And at the Last Supper, he left us a memorial of his loving presence, when he said: “Do this in memory of me.” So, we join together weekly, or even more often to hear the word of God and partake of this ritual meal through Holy Communion, in anticipation of the banquet that awaits us in the Kingdom of heaven. Saint Pope Pius X is remembered for encouraging frequent communion and for lowering the age of First Communion to seven or eight years old.

However, Jesus’ parable is not about peace and joy. The king is hurt when those invited ignore his invitation and then enraged when he sends a second invitation and some mistreat and even kill his servants. The parable, as told by Matthew, includes a reference to the destruction of Jerusalem for its rejection and crucifixion of Jesus.

Joy returns when the king sends his servants out into the streets to invite all they can find, good and bad alike, and the hall is filled with guests, which signifies the Church’s mission to all the world. But even then there is a discordant note. One guest refuses to accept the wedding garment, and is cast into the darkness outside. Not all who call themselves Christian accept to live love of God and neighbor as Jesus taught. And not all appreciate the Eucharist for the great gift that it is. Some ignore it, and others, more interested in their farm or business, make no attempt to fashion their life according to the one they receive.

And poor Jephthah from the first reading? The joy of his victory was cut short, because of a foolish vow he had made. He had promised: “whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites shall belong to the LORD. I shall offer him up as a burnt offering.” To his dismay, his only daughter was the one who came out to greet him. Sadly, so as not to lose face, Jephtah did as he had vowed; but the sacred author later noted that those who truly know the Lord, know that God dos not accept human sacrifice. We claim not to believe in human sacrifice today, but how many families are still being sacrificed on the altar of greed, war and cruel government policies.

Today’s scriptures offer us a promise and a warning: God is always ready to offer his people life and grace, but we often let our misconceptions and prejudices get in the way. The kingdom of heaven is not just about heaven, but the joy of living the way of the Lord here on earth.

Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help

This is not something new. Edith Stein, the towering intellectual saint and martyr the Church honors today, lost her faith in God during her teenage years, despite being brought up in a devout Jewish home. She was the youngest of eleven children. Her widowed mother encouraged all her children to think critically and encouraged them in their studies. 

Edith’s studies were interrupted by World War I. She became a volunteer nurse at an infectious disease hospital in her home town in Germany. Confronting the suffering of her patients must have been a major factor in choosing the topic of empathy for her doctoral thesis. Even with graduating summa cum laude from the University of Freiburg, she was denied a teaching certificate due to her gender. Instead, Edith became a teaching assistant to her university professor, the renowned philosopher and mathematician, Edmund Husserl. . 

Edith was constantly writing and studying, but it was not until she read the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila that her life changed dramatically. She was moved to convert to Catholicism and, eventually, to enter into the convent of the Discalced Carmelites. She took the name, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, honoring her patron saint. 

Her sister, Rosa, also converted and became a tertiary of the Carmelites, living outside the convent, but assisting the sisters in their mission. During the turbulent years of World War II, the leadership of the Carmelites grew concerned for the safety of St. Teresa Benedicta and her sister. They transferred them from Cologne to the Netherlands, thinking that their Jewish backgrounds would not under as much scrutiny. Soon after their transfer, however, the Dutch bishops wrote a strongly worded public letter condemning the abuses of the Nazi regime. Edith Stein also wrote a letter to Pope Pius XI, pleading that Pope must make a similar public statement against the Nazis. It is not known whether the Pope read the letter or not.  

It was not long after the Dutch bishops letter that the Gestapo rounded up 244 people of Jewish descent in the Netherlands, including Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and her sister, Rosa. They were sent to Auschwitz and murdered just a week later in the gas chambers, probably on August 9th, 1942. In a statement to her Carmelite superiors, Edith wrote: “I beg the Lord to take my life and my death…as atonement for the unbelief of the Jewish People, and that the Lord will be received by his own people and his kingdom shall come in glory, for the salvation of Germany and the peace of the world…” 

Even after her arrest, she was offered an escape plan, but refused, stating: “If somebody intervened at this point and took away (her) chance to share in the fate of (her) brothers and sisters, that would be utter annihilation.”

The writings of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross fill 17 volumes. A woman of integrity, she followed the truth wherever it led. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1999 and is one of six patrons saints of Europe.

Hoy es la fiesta de San Domingo. San Domingo fundó el grupo religioso católico que se llaman Los Dominicos. Pero el nombre que el mismo San Domingo les dio fue La Orden de Predicadores.  Los padres dominicos hacen lo que Jesús nos dice en este evangelio. Porque Jesús, sabiendo que él iba dar su vida en la cruz para que conozcamos su amor le dijo a Pedro y sus demás discípulos: "El que quiera venir conmigo, que renuncie a sí mismo, que tome su cruz y me siga…. el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá…. el que pierda su vida por mí, la encontrará. Esto mismo es lo que hacen los Dominicos hoy en día.

Tengo un amigo Dominico que se llama Padre Tadeo Padre Tadeo predica la palabra de Dios. Mas que eso él VIVE la palabra de Dios, viviendo las bienaventuranzas y las obras de la misericordia. Un ejemplo de eso es que Padre Tadeo escribe y visita desde casi veinte años a un preso, Gary, que tiene cadena perpetua en la cárcel. Hay un apodo que tienen los Padres Dominicos. Se han llamado los Perros del Señor. El origen de este apodo es un sueño que supuestamente tenía la mamá de San Domingo tenía durante su embarazo. Ella soñó que un perro salió de su vientre llevando una antorcha prendida. Sea como sea la autenticidad de este sueño nos habla de la fidelidad de los Dominicos a Jesús y a la Iglesia. Porque al igual que la fidelidad de un perro o perra a su dueño o a su dueña los Padres Dominicos son siempre fieles a la palabra de Dios que predican. Nos enseñan perder nuestras vidas viviendo el amor y el espíritu de sacrificio de Jesús. Nos enseñan hacerles caso a estas palabras de Jesús: el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá..y… el que pierda su vida por mí, la encontrará. Otra cosa es que el Santo Rosario empezó con la Virgen María apareciéndose a San Domingo. Ella le dijo que usara el rezo del Santo Rosario para combatir errores en contra de nuestra fe católica. Oremos: San Domingo, Virgen María ayudenos seguir a Jesús fielmente y ganar nuestra vida con Uds., el Padre ,Espíritu Santo y todos los demás Santos.

Juan Bautista fu el primo de Jesús. Jesús amó mucho a su primo Juan. Es mas Jesús dejó que su primo Juan lo bautizara. Hoy le dicen a Jesús que su primo Juan es muerto. Herodes lo había matado porque le decían cosas malas que estaba haciendo. Imagínense!  El querido y bien amado primo de Jesús lo han matado. ¿Pueden imaginar la tristeza de Jesús? Por eso Jesús, lleno de tristeza, quiere ir con sus discípulos y orar y compartir con su propio Papá, Abba celestial la tristeza que siente por la horrible matanza de su valiente primo Juan Bautista. Pero no dejan en paz a Jesús. La gente tiene hambre, hambre de la palabra de Jesús…de Dios. Además la gente de entonces, como la gente de nosotros hoy día tenemos hambre también.

Por eso Jesús olvida su tristeza. En vez de descansar él solo. Jesús satisface el hambre del pueblo. Hay un mensaje muy claro para nosotros acá. Porque muchas veces nosotros también somos tristes. Muchas veces la enfermedad o la misma muerte de alguien que queremos mucho nos llena de dolor y de tristeza. Pero si seguimos este bello ejemplo de Jesús pondremos nuestro dolor, nuestra tristeza al lado. Veremos, por ejemplo, el dolor y el hambre y el terror de la gente en Palestina, en Gaza. Pensaremos en la vergüenza que sienten mucha gente del estado de Israel al ver el maltrato de sus vecinos sean cristianos, sean musulmanes.  Al igual que Jesús aprenderemos a sentir el dolor y la tristeza no únicamente de nosotros, sino que veremos y nos llenaremos por la tristeza y la opresión de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en muchos lugares del mundo. Jesús, enséñame a sentir el dolor de todos.

Their story could be said to have started in the 600’s when monks arrived in China from Syria. Unfortunately, these monks not only carried silk to be traded with the Chinese people, but also the Nestorian heresy which denies the divinity of Christ. The Chinese emperor welcomed the monks and permitted them to share their faith. Over the next couple of centuries, churches were built and converts were made. Persecutions began in the 8th century, however, until almost all the Nestorian Christians were wiped out. 

The Spanish Dominican priest, Fr. Francisco de Capillas, arrived in China in the mid-1600’s after spending twenty years in the Philippines. He was successful in winning over many converts and started a lay order of Dominicans. The tolerant Ming Dynasty was then replaced by the Qing Dynasty and persecutions began again in earnest. Fr. De Capillas was arrested for “teaching false doctrine” and opposing the new emperor. He was beheaded while praying the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary in 1647.

Persecutions settled down after Fr. de Capillas’ death, but that changed in 1707 when the Pope Clement XI issued a decree forbidding ancestor worship. The Emperor used this as an excuse to expel all Christian priests, confiscate church lands, and close all churches. By the end of the 18th century, there were only one hundred thousand Christians left in the country and they had to practice their faith in secret. 

Fr. Augustine Zhao Rong, whose name is attached to today’s memorial, was a Chinese soldier ordered to accompany a French Bishop, John Gabriel Turin Dufresse, to his imprisonment and martyrdom. Zhao Rong was impressed with the Bishop’s gentle demeanor and courage. Upon the completion of his duty, he asked to be baptized. He progressed in the faith until he was the first native Chinese to be ordained a priest. Fr. Augustine was later arrested, tortured, and died of his injuries in prison. 

Other persecutions followed, the worst during the Boxer Revolution in 1900, which produced eighty-six martyrs including many religious sisters, priests, catechists, and other laity. The final two martyrs honored today died in 1930. 

In his canonization homily, Pope John Paul II said: 

Today the Church is grateful to her Lord, who blesses her and bathes her in light with the radiant holiness of these sons and daughters of China… Young Ann Wang, a 14-year-old, withstood the threats of the torturers who invited her to apostatize. Ready for her beheading, she declared with a radiant face: “The door of heaven is open to all,” three times murmuring: “Jesus.” And 18-year-old Chi Zhuzi, cried out fearlessly to those who had just cut off his right arm and were preparing to flay him alive: “Every piece of my flesh, every drop of my blood will tell you that I am Christian.” 

May our prayers join the prayers of our Christian brothers and sisters in China as they continue to inspire new converts to the faith. St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions, pray for us.

Jesús tiene un amor y una compasión que más nunca se agota. Prueba de esto son la cantidad de curaciones que hace en los dos capítulos de este evangelio de Mateo. El milagro que les leí ahorita fue cuando Jesús hizo hablar y oír este señor que estaba sordo y mudo. Pero poco antes de eso Jesús había hechos estas siete curaciones. 1. Primero Jesús curó un hombre de la letra. Entonces Jesús cura el siervo del oficial romano. Después de eso Jesús quita la fiebre de la esposa de su apóstol Pedro. Pero el amor y la compasión de Jesús sigue trabajando. Porque entonces Jesús expulsa los demonios de dos hombres. Entonces cura Jesús la parálisis de otro hombre. Sigue la compasión de Jesús. Porque va a la casa de Jairo y levanta la misma Muerte su hijita de los doce años y les manda darles algo de comer.  Sigue la compasión de Jesús. Porque poco antes Jesús había sanado una enfermedad de sangre de la mujer que le había puesto la mano con fe. Finalmente, antes de sanar el hombre sordomudo Jesús había devuelto la vista a dos hombres ciegos. La palabra de Dios hoy, al enseñarnos a Jesús con su amor y su compasión que no se acaban nunca…nos anima a decirle esto a Jesús: Jesús veo su amor y compasión por los enfermos y los débiles y mal tratados. Creo en ti, Jesús. Te amo , Jesús. Jesús ayúdame a más nunca dejar de hacer todo lo que yo puedo para acabar con las enfermedades, con las tristezas y con mi familia y con toda la gente que encuentro. Yo confió que tu propio amor y tu propia compasión me darán amor y fuerza para actuar como tu siempre actúa.

Cuando Jesús escogió a Mateo para que Mateo fuera uno de sus discípulos.. fue una sorpresa para los otros discípulos como Pedro, Andrés y Juan. Pero para los fariseos el hecho de que Jesús había escogido un cobrador de impuestos, una persona que ellos despreciaron... eso fue para los fariseos un gran golpe en la cara.  Pero Jesús iba seguir amando y escogiendo personas como era Mateo .Porque Jesús en aquel entonces y nosotros hoy en día  debemos de  seguir aprendiendo lo que Jesús dice hoy cuando dice:  “No son los sanos los que necesitan de médico, sino los enfermos. Vayan, pues, y aprendan lo que significa: Yo quiero misericordia y no sacrificios. Yo no he venido a llamar a los justos, sino a los pecadores”. Uds. y yo somos unos de esos pecadores que Jesús ha llamado para conocerle, amarle y seguirle. Mateo, el apóstol Mateo nos recuerda de una cosa muy importante de Jesús. Jesús nos llama no porque somos muy personas muy buenas. Jesús, Dios, nos llama porque ellos: Jesús y su Abba Celestial ven en cada uno de nosotros esa imagen y semejanza de ellos mismos. Por eso una lección para nosotros que nos enseña Mateo es eso. Cuando somos tentados de rechazar una persona porque creemos que esa persona es mala debemos pedirle a Jesús: Jesús, Jesús que escogiste a Mateo, aunque otras personas lo despreciaron, pensando que era una persona mala, Jesús ayúdame ver en todas las personas que encuentro hoy.. la imagen y semejanza suya, aunque esa imagen y semejanza suya sea un poco difícil de ver y reconocer.

Uds. que oyen esta prédica acá en el Internet Uds. saben y creen que lo que nos sana es la Persona de Jesús y las palabras de Dios.  El centurión romano hoy de momento pone su fe en la persona y en la palabra de Jesús. Porque el le dice a Jesús:  "Señor, yo no soy digno de que entres en mi casa; con que digas una sola palabra, mi criado quedará sano. El centurión hizo algo a lo que Abrahán y su esposa Sara hicieron cuando ellos acogieron los mensajeros de Dios en su casa. Abrahán les dijo:  "Señor mío, si he hallado gracia a tus ojos, te ruego que no pases junto a mí sin detenerte. Fue un momento de acogida…diría yo fue para Abrahán y Sara un momento de santa comunión.  Porque en el momento de recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía el decimos casi igual que el centurión:  Señor, no soy digno de que entres en mi casa, pero una palabra tuya bastará para sanarme. Y cuando el sacerdote nos ofrece el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús nos dice: “Cuerpo de Cristo”. Y nosotros respondemos: Amen. Quiere decir esto. Sí, yo creo esto.  Sabemos que a nuestro mundo nos hace falta mucha santa comunión. Porque hay demasiado, lo que se puede llamar triste desunión. El domingo pasado celebramos la fiesta de Corpus Cristi. Celebramos el don de la Eucaristía. Don que nos une mas a la persona, al amor y al corazón de Jesús.  Las palabras de Abrahán, de Sara del centurión y de Jesús…estas palabras nos invitan a vivir y a crecer en santa comunión con Dios y con todos los demás…en particular a los más olvidados, oprimidos, explotados y maltratados en el mundo de hoy
