 Exclusive: KOTOR 3 Fan Game In Development

I remember when it was announced that Star Wars was going to make an RPG and saying to myself, “What are they thinking?”  Up to that point Star Wars only produced games like Rouge Squadron, Battlefront or Empire at War.  No one ever thought the fast paced action of Star Wars could translate to a slow paced Role Playing Game.  Boy was I wrong because Knights of the Old Republic proved to be one of the most beloved games I had ever played.  My love for the game though also left a soft spot; targeted, and tortured while I waited for a true Knights of the Old Republic 3 game.  Well that game might just see the light of day thanks to a group of industry insiders called, “Project Blacklight.”  These dedicated fans intend to use their inside sources to legitimately develop a REAL Knights of the Old Republic 3 game based on the original production plans and notes.

I had the chance to talk with Project Blacklight to determine if these guys were legit or not, and what I heard was quite promising.  We discussed everything from the original two plot lines for Knights of the Old Republic 3 to there cooperation with some of the original Knights of the Old Republic 3 creative team.  You can hear the entire conversation in our Super Nerd Special Report Podcast below or you can check out some of the highlights from our conversation.

What is Project Blacklight

Project Black Light is a drafting project – meaning it’s the equivalent of any game in the pre-production phase.

We’ve established contacts in the Star Wars gaming industry and the hope is that once our draft is done they will help us to have the game pitched . . . it’s supposed to be the third [Knights of the Old Republic] game – a conclusion to wrap up [the story] and transition into the MMO.

Do you have access to any of the original KOTOR 3 story and will you use those story elements in developing your own KOTOR 3 game?

Yes. I’m not able to give you names because I don’t want anyone to get in trouble, but there are a lot of things that people don’t know about [the original] Knights of the Old Republic 3 game. With this project, I’ve had the privilege of talking with a lot of the original people that were working on it.

Knights of the Old Republic 3 was in development in 2005. There were actually two KOTOR 3 concepts. One was pitched by Obsidian which some people know of, and then there was a Lucasarts pitch. The in-house development team was selected to produce it. So almost everything we obtained. . .was based on the one they were going to develop, which was the Lucasarts story and not the Obsidian pitch, which most people thought was going to be [made into] KOTOR 3.

A large amount of the plot for KOTOR 3 that they were going to make would not make sense because of the MMO. The MMO was not in their game plan [originally] when they were making it, and when EA Games and Bioware [started] making the MMO they were not interested in [using any existing] KOTOR 3 content. They went completely their own way.

The game they were going to produce from the Lucasarts pitch [handled the Sith] much differently than what you would expect. The primary antagonist was a female Sith Lord who wasn’t an actual Sith – she was a Jedi who fell to the Dark Side. The Sith were not the Sith we see in the MMO. These Dark Jedi had fallen to the Dark Side [but were] not true Sith.

There were a handful of different characters [Obsidian] tossed around. Obsidian’s plot was all about the coming of a true Sith Empire from some unknown region, with powerful Sith Lords, and a massive army that infiltrated the Republic [in order] to bring the galaxy to an end. That is the basic plot that people are familiar with when they think of KOTOR 3. [That plot] was actually shot down in its entirety and Lucasarts went a different direction with it.

Are we going to get a definitive ending to the Revan story?

Yes. One of the things that we’ve done is read a lot of blogs and forums and the number one thing [fans] asked about was Revan. How does his story end? So that will obviously be a massive part of [our] Knights of the Old Republic 3.

Revan is very important … but I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s the sole purpose of the game. But that is definitely a big part of the game. We’ve spent a painstaking amount of time working to deliver as rich and powerful of a story line as possible while still making sure that it makes sense with the first two games and especially with the MMO.

From the polling that I’ve done, it was concluded that most people don’t like the Star Wars the Old Republic: Revan book. I have nothing against the author, but it created numerous canonical issues. The book was written in place of a Knights of the Old Republic 3 game to [bridge] the period between the first two games and the MMO. We’ve thrown that out completely. That book makes it impossible to make a third installment to the series [based on the original story line].

Why did KOTOR 3 never happen?  Did they just want to make more money from an MMO?

I’ve spoken with people from Obsidian’s and Lucasarts’ [ KOTOR 3 teams] about this [and they both] said the project was not as organized as you would think. It wasn’t really getting anywhere. They were having many issues regarding its development. It wasn’t that the people working on it were at fault, it was just the company was in a very strange period during the time [of production].

[There were] a lot of people getting thrown in [and] thrown out. Things were being changed here and there. There were management changes and the project was being pulled in too many different directions. When they eventually came back to the idea of [making KOTOR 3], they decided to make an MMO instead of an RPG.
