In this episode, I interview Paul Gough, owner of multiple practices and founder of PT Profit Academy. PT Profit Academy is a company committed to helping physical therapy clinics develop successful marketing campaigns, they type of campaigns that significantly multiply revenue. Using key insights Paul teaches practices how to target the perfectpotential patient through carefully chosen mediums. And what does that patient look like?—it looks like Mary, a fifty-three-year-old grandmother who’s physically active and hates painkillers, but in dire need of a way to alleviate her lower back pain.

When you need new information and resources for your practice and your patients, where do you go? How many websites have you tried and how little success have you had? Today’s guest has the solution to your problem. Meet Deidre Newborn, CEO of Therapy Share. The Therapy Share (www.TheTherapyShare.com) is a site that provides physical therapists with complete access to remarkable resources and outstanding industry information. Even though Therapy Share only launched recently, it’s already experiencing tremendous success, and as it continues to grow, it will become an amazing resource for all healthcare professionals. The idea started when Deidre and her colleague wanted to resolve a constant issue once and for all—they were always struggling to get access to helpful resources to share with their clients. From exercise programs to cognitive worksheets, they thought there should be an easier way to find the information they and their patients needed—and just like that, Therapy Share was born. The resources offered on the site are designed by professionals in the industry, so they’re 100% legit and 100% more likely to work. Whether you’re interested in purchasing the resources available, or are thinking about selling your own, you need to check out TheTherapyShare.com. Listen in as I ask to Deidre how she got this site going and what steps she has taken to ensure that it’s both relevant and beneficial to people in the healthcare industry.

"Paul has seen first-hand the impact that reduced insurance company rebates, increased government intervention and the changing allied healthcare landscape has had on health business owners around the world."

Health Business Ownership Has Never Been More Demanding and Challenging – with Increasing Deductibles, More Government Regulations, Changing Referral Patterns, and the Growth of Corporate and Doctor Owner Allied Health Clinics

Since graduating as a Physical Education teacher in 1987, and then as a physiotherapist in 1990, Paul opened multiple multi-disciplinary health clinics in and around Sydney, Australia.

He has been actively involved in clinical education around the world having lectured to over 25,000 health professionals - in the areas of program design, injury prevention, rehabilitation and business development and even found the time to win multiple titles as a competitive bodybuilder.

Paul is living proof this “Ultimate Health Business Lifestyle” is possible. At one stage he owned 6 successful Get Active Physiotherapy clinics in Australia, yet still spent more time at home than his wife preferred, never missed a school concert or sports carnival, and visited his clinics for only a few hours each week. While doing this he did not even live in the same city as 5 of his clinics!

Since selling his health businesses Paul now prefers spending even more time with his family and friends, at the beach, or at home working on the Million Dollar Health Professional Program, Profit Club, One on One Coaching, The Practice Acceleration Program, presenting live seminars and working on his most recent passion – the “One Minute Practice” program.

Paul has seen first-hand – the impact that reduced insurance company rebates, increased government intervention and the changing allied healthcare landscape in private practice has had on health business owners around the world.

Don’t miss this chance to find out how your international colleagues have handled and thrived under the exact same conditions USA health providers are so worried about.

Would you consider ADD or ADHD a super power?

Well if not, take a read of this from FORBES magazine
What do business mogul Sir Richard Branson, Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad, and JetBlue founder David Neeleman, have in common? Well, besides being monumentally successful, they all have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and, like other entrepreneurs and CEOs, some will even tell you that they are successful largely because of the “diagnosis”, not in spite of it.

It takes an adventurous spirit, to strike out on your own. Entrepreneurship fits perfectly with the ADHDer’s need for stimulation and a willingness to take risks. The greatest success stories in business took a leap based on what they saw in the marketplace at a particular moment in time. Rejecting solutions that seemed to be “normal”, they instead trusted their instincts and forged ahead with something new and unproven while their more risk-averse peers shook their heads and insisted it would never work.
Recently I attended a private event for the elite entrepreneur, where Dr Ned Hallowell, gave a very insightful review of how ADD/ ADHD has been presented in the media and by other doctors to the general public.

But in fact, the majority of the entrepreneurs in the room including myself felt a shared commonality among the symptoms described. Many where leading dentists, physicians, surgeons.

Dr Hallowell was gracious to grant me a quick interview for my audience. I hope you enjoy and find some comfort in your findings

My favorite saying.....
[Tweet "It's not what you make, it's what you KEEP!"]
As most healthcare practitioners know, it's always a challenge to figure out what the right thing to do is and the wrong. But most just don't want to lose out by over-paying uncle sam. Im not a proponent of not paying taxes, but i am the first to tell you that the proper tax advisor could save you millions of dollars over the lifespan of your practice. Better yet, it could help with the sale and even something for the next generation. There are so many options, I can't just list them all.

In this episode I interview the managing attorney of Shah & Associates. The wealth of knowledge I received was absolutely amazing.

Sit back and listen to the insights of what every practice owner should know.
If you're thinking- I just pay what my accountant tells me, then this episode is definitely for you. Recently, I read a thread on Linkedin where a new grad wanted to open a private practice. She asked what a practice owner made a year. Bold question. But I'm glad that she asked. The answers where typical. But to the shock of the new grad she decided that she could make the same amount as an employee over a couple of years. This answer disturbed me.
There is simply no way an employee can "earn" more than a practice owner. Yes its true a practice owner could have a really bad year. But as an employee, eventually your salary is capped and you have to pay taxes on that salary, with no significant write offs. There are so many levels to this conversation. Since it was not a thread i started, I did not have permission to repost.
My goal for all my followers is to take a deeper understanding of the phrase it's not what you make but what you keep. And of course to consult professionals such as Neel and his network to ensure that you are doing just that.

#GetPT1st is a something that was not brought up directly in this interview. But indirectly Michael Bowers, the newly appointed CEO of the APTA, stated that if all physical therapists tweeted the same hashtag on the same day, it would be trending. Now that would be a statement!
I like his thinking...
Now, i don't know your stand on the APTA. Some members love it, while others have a lot of criticism. Of course Michael is fully aware of this.
Its like this in every industry not just physical therapy. There will be individuals that are upset that the association is not doing enough.While others having no care at all. My take is simple and yet effective. The association is meant as a resource. Support your profession in any way you can. If you think that is by paying dues, and being active, so be it. If you think its by tweeting, and writing on threads on linkedin, thats fine. But don't come crying when changes occur and you didn't get a chance to speak or be involved in those changes. If your biggest complaint is about the dues then listen to the entire interview. There are some great ideas here.

I want to make it clear that I am never in support of the establishment, big corporations or status quo, but I am the first one to say if you are not helping to make a change then please don't complain.

Listen to the entire interview and leave me a comment. You can also message me on linkedin.

Remember on May 1st 2015 tweet GetPT1st........lets put Michaels theory to the test.

For Jamey he knew his passion had changed. So he did what alot of us do not have the guts to do…..He removed himself from the practice.

Like most private practice owners and MDpreneurs, Sturdy Mckee was approached by a software company (ie Zocdoc) to implement their services. But the challenge was that, Zocdoc did not provide him or his practice everything his practice required. The majority of people sit back and wait for change.....

Instead of waiting for a change to take place, Sturdy's entrepreneurial drive helped him create a new program. ScheduleDoc (http://scheduledoc.co) was Born. A value driven company that understands that all healthcare practitioners need a better system when it comes to scheduling patients.

Learn from Sturdy, how he took a simple concept, that was a pain-point in his practice and created the solution that could be used by every healthcare provider. If you would like to watch a demo of this software click here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGDmU4X_JlsvKvMHrAw-ehQ). Sturdy also has some great advice for those new grads around the 35 min mark in this episode.

As an entrepreneur of a private practice, it prepares you for what works and what doesn't work. The question is, can you admit what doesn't work?- Sturdy Mckee
When researching more information about software I wanted to give my listening audience another viewpoint of why scheduling software could be advantageous. I discovered www.kabukit.com (https://www.kabukit.com/)
Asha Soares, CFA (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-you-doing-reduce-no-shows-asha-soares-cfa) has written a great article on dealing with decreasing the dreaded statistic of the "no show" rate. She identifies with dentists but this can be transferred to any healthcare professional in private practice.
But why do no-shows happen in the first place? While it's true that some people are just inconsiderate by nature, there are a variety of other reasons behind the no-show - some of which can be managed.

	* Appointment Reminders

One of the biggest, easily avoided no-show excuses is forgetting about the appointment altogether.

	* Educate Your Patients

Make sure that your patients understand the importance of regular visits to the dentist. Reducing the number of no-shows and cancellations starts in the dental chair.

Even the busiest of practices have cancellations. Let's face it, last minute cancellations are hard to fill and cancellations are money lost for you and your practice. Its especially frustrating when you know how many people are looking for last minute appointments, but have no way of connecting with those patients.

	* Follow Up with No-Shows

Finally, follow-up with no-shows and cancellations personally to find out why they couldn't attend the appointment and express concern for their absence. Make sure you track no-shows so you can identify "chronic no-shows" and enforce any appointment cancellation policies.

About Us

Kabuk is an exciting new platform that connects Canadians with the healthcare professionals they need, when they need them and enables them to book desired appointments directly online. For healthcare providers, we help attract new patients, reduce no shows (using automated appointment reminders), and, reduce staff time spent on booking appointments. Learn more about Kabuk at www.kabukit.com (https://www.kabukit.com/).

I personally believe that all practices need systems to create an automated and independent practice. Do you need help with creating those systems?

	* Appointment Reminders

One of the biggest, easily avoided no-show excuses is forgetting about the appointment altogether.

	* Educate Your Patients

	* Follow Up with No-Shows

Finally, follow-up with no-shows and cancellations personally to find out why they couldn't attend the appointment and express concern for their absence. Make sure you track no-shows so you can identify "chronic no-shows" and enforce any appointment cancellation policies.
