Wait! Who's that guy?? It's Steve... or maybe it's Doug! And the guys are covering The Dandy Warhols this episode! From indie underground to the bane of their label, the Dandy's have always made the music they want to make (whether it gets released or not is another story!). The guys also chat about experimental indulgences, a(nother) milestone for U2, and Steve's shocking birthday present.

We Used To Be Friends - Welcome To The Monkey House

Be Alright - Why You So Crazy

Bohemian Like You - Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia

5:29 - Ladytron did an episode of "What's In My Bag?" with Amoeba Music, where they all shop at a record store and pick out their fave albums, then chat about them!

13:15 - The trailer for DIG!

19:17 - Here is the interview of Zia McCabe by the Women Of Rock Oral History Project. It's a great insight.

20:15 - Vancouver Washington is right across the river from Portland Oregon, and it didn't make any sense for Zia to have moved up to Canada and get recruited into the Dandy's from there. Vancouver BC is about 5 - 6 hours away.

22:09 - It's not obvious when spoken, but the label's name was Tim/Kerr

44:18 - As bad as that sounds, it's actually worse! Here's a clip from DIG! about how it went down

48:13 - Anyone else think Zoe is prettier than Cameron Diaz? The music video for "Every Day Should Be A Holiday" includes footage from the film "There's Something About Mary"

49:08 - The video for "Boys Better" has a very guerilla feeling to it, probably due to lack of label support (video is sorta NSFW)

54:37 - If you don't get that reference, your assignment is to watch all of Brooklyn 99

1:01:40 - Here's the Vodafone ad "How Are You?"

1:26:07 - The Dandys perform "Bohemian Like You" at Top Of The Pops

1:28:19 - Check it out! Here is Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" and The Dandy's "You Were The Last High"

1:31:27 - It was also "We Used To Be Friends" on The O.C.

1:32:24 - Pitchfork sometimes needs to lighten up

1:54:52 - The incredibly fun and groovy music video for "Mission Control"

2:02:49 - It's the same general gist, but it definitely sounds like the Dandys. Here's their take on the Mythbusters theme

2:29:32 - To get an idea of the musical repetitiveness, Doug referenced the Bubble Bobble soundtrack, which Angry Video Game Nerd covered in this video

2:37:09 - The unfortunate AI nightmare that is "I'd Like To Help You With Your Problem". It's got a great message behind it, but has all the trappings of bad AI - ghost limbs, scrambled characters, blob people, etc

Doug's Recommendations:

8:48 - Yes we did talk about Lauryn Hill quite a bit! Check out our episode on One Album Wonders

48:53 - Yeah, Pitchfork gave Parachutes a fairly neutered review. Ouch!

51:47 - With hindsight, it's easy to overlook Coldplay's American debut on Conan. But at the time, they must have been crushed.

1:03:34 - Here's the Royksopp Trembling Heart Mix of Clocks. Music is pretty groovy but the lyrics feel a little mismatched.

1:03:49 - And if you like the sound of them, here's our episode R Is For Royksopp

1:10:10 & 1:10:20 - These are the openings of both versions of Talk (or Talk X and Talk Y as Doug proposes)

1:18:07 - Man these guys are really hard to please. Pitchfork give X&Y a pretty lackluster review.

1:19:04 - New York Times were pretty hard on Coldplay even at this point (sorry, article is behind a paywall!)

1:34:54 - Ed Sheeran demonstrates how he won his copyright court case on the Howard Stern Show

1:46 - You can watch the silly minute long reel on YouTube here

5:35 - The excellently named Don Ferguson would regularly portray Preston Manning in the Royal Canadian Air Farce. It's really dated at this point, but back in the 90's this was hilarious (this isn't the specific sketch Doug was referring to, but it's the same sort of thing)

6:16 - Here is the Legal Eagle video "How Swift Got Her Masters Back"

6:32 - Rick Beato interviewing Sting. If you love music, you should watch Rick's channel

Music featured this week:

James Bond Theme - John Barry & Orchestra (composed by Monty Norman)

Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey

1:21 - Stuart is referring to the episodes U Is For U2, Part 1 & Part 2

1:35 - Doug is correct! Both Travis and Stuart were around for our special episode on our Top Five Favourite Albums (although Stuart isn't in the picture)

1:45 - You can listen to our special on One Album Wonders here

4:23 - Steve just managed to get that one. It was Mya who did the theme song for the video game "Everything Or Nothing"

4:28 - Esthero did the theme for "Nightfire" called "Nearly Civilized" and it's pretty great

5:10 - Monty Norman and John Barry are the two greatest influences to music in the Bond films, hands down

7:12 - For the record "Millennium" by Robbie Williams is excellent

16:01 - In fairness, Shirley Bassey did THREE Bond themes. Can you name them?

17:47 - Dr, No doesn't have a dedicated theme song, per se. The opening credits open on the James Bond theme, before transitioning on Caribbean percussion (as heard in this clip), and then finally into a native rendition of "Three Blind Mice." This actually makes for a very stylized opening sequence.

24:31 - It was actually a huge bit of musical foreshadowing for the film. Those familiar with "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" would recognize that it signifies that Bond's newfound love was doomed.

29:00 - You can scope out the whole demo for "GoldenEye" by Bono and The Edge here

31:30 - You can check out Radiohead's "SPECTRE" synched up with the actual opening credit sequence here

As a result he lost a ton of his vinyl collection. In fairness, he will say that a good percentage of them were also warped from sunlight, so that probably made it an easier argument to buy into

Calculate - Golden Era

If You Must - Both Sides Of The Brain

6:17 - Here's Catey Shaw's Soundcloud; check it out!

7:49 - You've probably seen this video but with a sad melancholic instrumental track playing over it, seemingly criticizing use of electronics as some kind of societal failing. While there's an argument for that, taking the original song out of the video removes a good portion of the message: it's not just about electronics, but a system in place that breeds apathy. It's a fairly directed message towards the American political and commercial system. Watch the video here.

10:51 - Even after a remastering, this G Is For Gorillaz episode is still cursed

32:50 - You better wash your hair if you must, you gotta brush your teeth if you must, or else you'll be funky!

44:58 - Jump The Gut is a classic

Steve and Doug go back to the new rock movement of the mid-2000's and talk about the strangely named band, The Music. The duo also lament and gush about live shows, the value of selling your own music, and Vancouver's night life.

Music featured this week:

Breakin' - Welcome To The North

Take The Long Road And Walk It - The Music

No Weapon Sharper Than Will - Strength In Numbers

5:31 - So in case you're interested, here are the Bandcamp pages for Different Sleep and Lavachild

Steve and Doug are joined once again by Their Friend Travis to discuss the rock legends, Led Zeppelin. They groan at the notion that "Stairway To Heaven" is the only good Zeppelin track, ponder the genesis of metal, and even sidetrack to Gilligan's Island.

Six Degrees From King Crimson:

Led Zeppelin -> George Chkiantz -> King Crimson

Music featured this week:

Black Dog - Untitled

No Quarter - Houses Of The Holy

20:11 - This never gets old: Viking Kittens

31:00 - James Brown's "Get On Up" plus Zeppelin's "Whole Lot Of Love" becomes "Whole Lot Of Sex Machine"

35:20 - Steve is thinking of 12 X 5 from 1964

37:50 - Whoops! Steve meant to say Atticus Ross. Atticus Finch is the lawyer from "To Kill A Mockingbird"...although his inclusion would certainly make for an interesting song

1:02:21 - Is Steve crazy? Or do you think that "Kashmir" and "Wake Up" sound very alike?

1:03:35 - The homage is very real: Doves "M62 Song" takes serious inspiration from King Crimson's "Moonchild"

Music featured this week:

Take Ü There

Where Are Ü Now

To Ü

5:36 - You can hear more about what Steve and Doug think about their new album on the episode H Is For The Helio Sequence!

7:58 - So that contest is obviously over by now, but here is DC Pronk's Soundcloud anyway

26:14 - We actually get around to covering them in quite a bit more depth, which you can hear in our episode J Is For Justice

30:07 - It made a huge splash in Calgary (where Steve first saw it) and then picked up a lot of steam around the net. You've probably seen it, but if you haven't you should. Check out "Hideaway" by Kiesza

36:30 - Yeah, so the effects artist really tried to brighten up this otherwise yawn video for "Where Are Ü Now" - over 1.1 BILLION views as of 2019

44:57 - Tinseltown is a theatre brand owned by Cinemark. Their only Canadian location was in International Village Mall in downtown Vancouver. It is now a Cineplex.

Music featured this week:

This Seat Is Definitely Taken - Sleepy Tigers [EP]

Sleeping Pills - Home Is Where You Hang Yourself

Japanese Gum - The Young Machines

7:18 - The website is a little glitchy, but the episode still works! Take a listen to Doug cohosting the "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" episode of the Sci Fi Movie Podcast!

9:25 - Take a listen to our old buddy DC Pronk's Soundcloud

16:42 - What do you think? You can watch this kind of awkward interview Marc Bianchi gave to KTSW 89.9 back in 2011

41:46 - After we initially released this episode, Marc Bianchi contacted us himself and gave some feedback! One of the items was addressing this "mystery remix" of "Keystroke" and he thought the only thing that made send was "These Days (AmAnSet Keystroke mix)" by The American Analog Set (from their Updates EP) - and he was right!

1:03:33 - Sigh.... one more viewing of this Telus ad with music by Her Space Holiday

1:13:07 - Interestingly, Bianchi released a new Her Space Holiday album, Gravity, in 2018

7:46 - Check out the entry for "Polish Girl" by Neon Indian on Doug's list of 100 Favourite Songs - it's number 39 - and then also listen to our episode N Is For Neon Indian

25:36 - Doug is right, "Promises" by The Presets is very sad and also has a great beat to it

37:30 - So I've reevaluated the video of the live performance of "Vibrate", and there IS some background noise. But the song is far too crisp to be recorded live, so I'm pretty sure that they layered the studio version on top of this live video. Take a look for yourself!

42:47 - Here is Ghostland Observatory's interview with AVFuzz

58:45 - Ghostland Observatory and Snoop Dogg play against each other in Soundclash 2011

59:12 - Apparently in 2018, they released a new album via Trashy Moped called See You Later Simulator - check it out at their official site below!

Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand

13:26 - Take this opportunity to check out the music of Lux Lisbon, it's pretty good!

20:42 - You can hear more in our episode B Is For Belle and Sebastian!

26:12 - Listen to Steve and Doug poke fun of Daniel and Alex Turner in their episode A Is For Arctic Monkeys!

40:58 - Avant-garde: (noun) - the advance group in any field, especially in the visual, literary, or musical arts, whose works are characterized chiefly by unorthodox and experimental methods

50:54 - That'd be Fromage 2005 for you keeping track at home

1:00:56 - And so should you! Go here: S Is For Sigur Rós

1:20:25 - Ooooooooo! Spooky! Franz Ferdinand's video for "Evil Eye"

Steve and Doug take a trip down Nostalgia Lane for Ireland's huge international New Age act, Enya. The gents also talk about album sales in countries, singing in Elvish, and stalkers.

Six Degrees From King Crimson:

Enya -> Ross Cullum -> Tears For Fears -> Mel Collins -> King Crimson

Music featured this week:

Orinoco Flow - Watermark

Only Time - A Day Without Rain

The Celts - Enya / The Celts

3:41 - Spoiler alert: upon the release of SPECTRE, Steve found Sam Smith's "Writing's On The Wall" to be almost unlistenable

13:03 - This VHS rip isn't the best quality, but offers a rare look at the early days of both Clannad and Enya. Enya is on keyboards and backup vocals, in case you want to shout that it's Moya singing, not Enya.

15:56 - Looks like this miniseries is pretty hard to track down. The one I found on YouTube is from 2000, and another I found on the BBC's website is from 1978 - but the episode titles match, so maybe it's a typo? Being in Canada I can't view them to verify. The one Enya did the music for is fully titled "The Celts: Rich Traditions and Ancient Myths" and is from 1987.

19:57 - Here's Enya's full interview with Good Morning America in 1991

36:09 - Listen to the lyrics to "Wire" by U2. Another interesting play on words that Steve likes is the line "Cartoon cutout / cut throat bled out." Translating that into another language would lose the flow and alliteration

37:52 - Doesn't look like Enya hits that distinction of top female artist in the world. Sources vary, but it looks like Madonna and Barbra Streisand have her beat

38:14 - Here's Enya's interview on the Late Late Show, Part 1 and Part 2

55:53 - No joke! will.i.am curiously didn't ask for permission to sample (heavily) from Daft Punk, and produced a song / video that is arguably his best work, especially when compared to the fairly boring original version. Just ask permission dude!

1:09:50 - You can read up more on Loxian here on Enya's website

Doug's Recommendations:

Book Of Days (English version) - Paint The Sky With Stars

The Celts - Enya / The Celts

Storms In Africa - Watermark

Steve's Recommendations:

Caribbean Blue - Shepherd Moons

Cursum Perficio - Watermark

Aldebaran - Enya / The Celts

This week, Steve and Doug take on their next request, in the form of the troubled and intriguing career of neo-soul gem D'Angelo. Also, bearing your soul as an artist, treating your audience as adults, and struggles with substance abuse and suicide. Some heavy topics in this one; buckle up!

Music featured this week:

Lady - Brown Sugar

Really Love - Black Messiah

Untitled (How Does It Feel) - Voodoo

Cruisin' - Brown Sugar

2:25 - Looks like they're trying to fix up their website, but the links still work so please check out Doug's guest appearance on the Sci Fi Movie Podcast episode on "Men In Black"

10:51 - As of 2019 it doesn't look like Kanye West is actually running, but here is his rambling speech from the 2015 VMA's

32:18 - Oh, uh, explicit content warning

Steve's Recommendations:

Smooth - Brown Sugar

Africa - Voodoo

This episode, Steve and Doug tackle the big electronica duo from London, Chase & Status. They jib jab a bit on how techno became dubstep, the almighty ampersand, and music you can (can't?) dance to.

Music featured this week:

End Credits - No More Idols

Count On Me - Brand New Machine

Pieces - More Than Alot

1:21 - Looks like they're trying to fix up their website, but the links still work so please check out Doug's guest appearance on the Sci Fi Movie Podcast episode on "Men In Black"

6:55 - What interview with Cope? This interview with Cope!

25:29 - Take a look at the music video for "Pieces" and let us know what you think! Cheap, or artistically interesting?

25:53 - Steve misspoke here; "Hurt You" doesn't have a music video, but instead what's posted online is the visuals that would play in the background during the tour. Still a great idea!

33:00 - Here's a weird one folks, but one we can chalk up to a buggy website (seriously, I see broken code). NME gives a blistering and dour review of No More Idols, but yet the rating is 5 stars. Strange!

34:15 - Steve has a soft spot for "Turn Down For What"; Doug does not

42:54 - Chase & Status released an EP called London Bars later in 2015, then Tribe in 2017, and then RTRN II JUNGLE in 2019

47:54 - Here's the interview Chase & Status did with Tim Westwood. Pretty funny!

49:40 - Here's a playlist for the Roni Size Reprazent's album "In The Mode"

Music featured this week:

Heartbeat - Summer Heart

Fog Rolls On - Boracay Planet

9:01 - A few years have passed, and the video of Big Lenny's appearance has come back onto YouTube, because nothing stays blocked forever.

11:36 - Here's a copy of my original Facebook post: 1) Click here 2) Pause at the beginning 3) Mute the video's sound 4) Click here 5) Sync up the start times 6) You're welcome

23:28 - Just a quick word regarding the "PURE" video... there's an epilepsy warning on the YouTube description, so might as well pass that on here. At the time, Steve thought Doug was joking!

26:03 - Sadly Steve hasn't been able to find that promo video in years

46:56 - The only Dream Journal Steve could find on Bandcamp and Soundcloud seem to be a different artist... so we're not sure what happened there. But here's Zoolab's Bandcamp!

11:53 - WatchMojo's list of Top 10 Animated Music Videos, which features Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?" This is a great list!

15:47 - As we embarrassingly found out in our K Is For Kasabian episode, there are two singers: Tom Meighan and Sergio Pizzorno

17:43 - Arctic Monkey's win at the 2006 Mercury Prize Awards was kinda awkward

46:32 - In case you aren't sure just how Bowie the song and video are, here is David Bowie's "The Next Day" - oh, uh, some disturbing content in there

52:10 - Reportedly, ABBA was offered a cold hard $1 billion (that's with a "b") to go on tour in 2000, by a British and American consortium. Truthfully, it might have still been a profitable tour!

1:02:25 - Indeed, the boys finally released another album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino in May 2018!

Doug's Recommendations:

8:45 - Okay music fans, here are the videos for Marianas Trench's "Pop Music 101" and Matthew Good Band's "Anti-pop"

19:52 - For more of our thoughts on Queen, check out our episode Q Is For Queen

21:11 - Here's her interview with Jimmy Fallon that Nate was referring to

33:08 - Todd In The Shadows did indeed cover "Who Let The Dogs Out" on his show One Hit Wonderland. Doug missed what Steve was alluding to, and is referenced in that episode: the original song was by Anslem Douglas, and was indeed on All Stars 2000

49:53 - Is this the best thing on YouTube? You be the judge and look at this graph

1:03:20 - No, it's definitely Spears doing the faux Brit accent in the song, which baffled some critics (including Steve)

1:04:51 - No joke! will.i.am curiously didn't ask for permission to sample (heavily) from Daft Punk, and produced a song / video that is arguably his best work, especially when compared to the fairly boring original version. Just ask permission dude (see below video)

1:27:58 - I'm pretty sure Doug is talking about Soulja Boy: The Movie

1:29:20 - Here's "Turn My Swag On" by Soulja Boy Tell'em. It is, admittedly, hilarious

Back in the dark recesses of the Vancouver nightlife, there was once a post-punk spastic collection of artists called UJ3RK5. Steve and Doug try to make sense of it all.

6:02 - Here's the video of Kanye West almost crashing Beck's acceptance of Album of the Year for the 57th Grammy award

9:52 - Obama calling West a jackass pre-interview is still hilarious

11:13 - DMX just can't seem to figure out how to use Google

35:38 - Again, just to get it in writing, the stories of Rasputin are probably exaggerated and some of the supernatural elements are easily explained these days. The Tsar's son's recovery via telegram could even be the placebo effect

53:53 - Heads up, PledgeMusic is no longer a thing :(

1:07:08 - Doug compiled a list of his 100 Favourite Songs, and put "Lost In The Plot" as #8

1:16:51 - Steve and Doug would later go see The Dears live, and have a quick chat with Murray Lightburn, although Steve was too chicken to ask for a snipe

Merry Christmas! What better way to celebrate the holidays than to plug in and listen to our episode on Crystal Castles? Along the way, Steve and Doug also muse about music videos, She-Ra and cartoon villains, and divisive albums alienating fans.

Music featured this week:

Celestica - Crystal Castles II

Plague - Crystal Castles III

Alice Practice - Alice Practice [EP]

1991 - Crystal Castles

4:34 - Here, we've saved you the trouble of looking them up on Twitter: Maya Rae and Steven Hardy

6:00 - What?? You know - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's "For Kate I Wait". And in case you're wondering, yeah he's a weird guy

7:25 - Come at me, Charlie Brown fans

12:18 - Okay, elephant in the room time. YES, we are now both completely aware of the horrendous situations that Alice Glass has alleged against Ethan Kath in the years between this episode's release and today. It's tragic, heart-breaking, and taints this episode. Rather than bury it though, we think it's important to highlight this band regardless, if at the very least to continue to validate Alice Glass' passion and contribution. Her artistry is still unquestioned.

13:20 - And here's another plug for MITIGO

14:47 - Here's the "Crimewave" video from Crystal Castles and Health

22:00 - God that's awkward

24:02 - In 2017, Alice Glass denied that this story was accurate and said Kath made it up to diminish her creative process

36:19 - Here is the video for "Courtship Dating" in all its boring glory

42:47 - The quality Doug looks for in a good remix is to expand and shape the original song into something more reminiscent of the remix artist. The Little Ones had a cheerful song called "Lovers Who Uncover" and Crystal Castles offers this fascinating remix

50:00 - For clarity's sake, the Crystal Castles song is first, then the Sigur Rós follows

56:00 - Fun story: in the time since this episode was first released, the Crystal Castles video for "Plague" was taken down for copyright violation (seriously!). Some fan made the effort to upload another copy of the video, but apologies if this link becomes broken in the meantime. But just to show I'm not nuts, here's an article from Pitchfork about the release of the video

1:05:34 - Crystal Castles did indeed continue on without Alice Glass, releasing Amnesty (I) in August of 2016 with new vocalist Edith Francis

1:06:41 - Check out Alice Glass' Soundcloud here - it's not dissimilar from Crystal Castles, but definitely has her own sound. In other words, still abrasive at times but at other times very melodic

1:11:39 - And now that short promo video for "Magic Spells"

1:17:11 - For comparison, here's the track by Liars "It Fit When I Was A Kid"

1:18:17 - Here's the YouTube channel by the fan that has collected basically all of Crystal Castles' work

Doug's Recommendations:

Magic Spells - Crystal Castles

This episode, Steve and Doug think back to some previous episodes to expand their thoughts and chat about some concerts they went to. Also, some feedback regarding a question Steve posed regarding the pro's and con's of a remix overshadowing an original song.

1:14 - Yeah, I've changed the upload order and put the MITIGO interview after this follow up episode. Going through the past episodes, the follow up and the interview episodes haven't been consistent in which goes first, so I'm putting some consistency in.

5:15 - As discussed in P Is For Paul White!

20:43 - Backtrack to R Is For Roxy Music!

24:53 - We did skip Passengers "Original Soundtrack 1" in our U Is For U2, Part 2 episode but at least we cover it here!

17:23 - Follow Doug's recommendation and pick up the "Dark Was The Night" compilation!

21:18 - Here's the demo version of "O.N.E." and as you can tell, it's more in line with the music from All Hour Cymbals than Odd Blood. But still groovy

11:02 - It's since been rebranded as "R U Talkin' R.E.M. RE: ME?", but definitely worth a listen!

12:19 - And we did with our episode Follow Up Fun and Concerts Too

30:05 - Steve wasn't a fan, but feel free to make your own judgments and check out this soundtrack from "The Great Gatsby"

34:34 - Well this is awkward. Steve has lately taken a keen interest in experimenting in the kitchen, and has started posting a lot of his creations to his own Instagram account. In fairness, they are usually delicious

10:57 - Okay Doug, you win. Here's the video for "Another One Rides The Bus" from 1981. I love how Tom Snyder keeps trying to drop jokes that don't fly.

15:09 - The side-by-side comparison between "Beat It" and "Eat It" really has to be seen to truly be appreciated.

15:47 - Sigh. Special guest appearance by Scarlett, Steve's very young daughter. Don't worry - she nods off pretty quick.

20:54 - Hey look! You can see the whole archive of Ask Al here!

26:58 - The winner of the 1987 Grammy for Best Comedy Album went to Bill Cosby's "Those Of You With Or Without Children, You'll Understand". Doug's comment about wondering where "they are now" is, in hindsight, awkwardly hilarious.

32:18 - We love "UHF" and you should definitely watch it (sorry Orion!).

49:51 - "The Weird Al Show" is full of tons of sketches. Here's a compilation of Fred Huggins episodes.

On this *remastered* second part of their U2 episode, Steve and Doug continue talking about the Irish rockers with guest cohosts Stuart Ferguson and Travis Mendgen. The four chat about image changes, alienating fans, and how to structure an album (or not!).

0:45 - As stated last episode, you'll probably have noticed a bit of a drop in fidelity and an echo. To accommodate the two guest hosts, we recorded in a new, larger space and weren't as close to the mic as we should have been. It's not a big difference, but there you go.

1:48 - Take a gander at the video of U2's cover of "Night and Day"

2:15 - Okay but seriously "Sweet Fire Of Love" by Bono and Robbie Robertson is an absolutely amazing song and you guys should all listen to it
