Part 2 – Brian’s Story Continues
In part two of this two part series, Brian Mathrusse shares how our creator God gave him assurance that there is hope and recovery is possible. This required turning away from the unhealthy habits Brian had lived with for many years, and making the decision to work through his addiction and mental health issues. Brian’s story reminds us that substance abuse and mental illness do not discriminate. Even individuals who come from well-respected families and enjoy educational success can find themselves making decisions that are not easily overcome. This episode includes encouragement for anyone wanting to improve their mental health and well-being.

This episode features an interview with the authors of Empower the Warrior Within: Using God’s Word to Win the War. Debra Schwietert and Annie Bifulco had a providential meeting through their mutual therapist’s anxiety group. The original author, Rex Briggs, MSW, developed the secular anxiety program many years ago. The principles in his program are also found in the Bible. Before retiring, Rex recruited Annie and Debra to create a Christ-centered program using his original materials. The resulting book and accompanying field journal are available on Amazon.

Annie Bifulco spent years working to overcome crippling anxiety through intensive individual, group, and advanced group therapy with Rex Briggs, MSW, and other counselors. After working alongside Rex for almost a decade, he approached her about rewriting the program he had used for 40 years in clinical practice, for more tailored use in the Church. As he prepared to retire from his life’s work, Annie agreed to pursue this calling, partnering with Dr. Debra Schwietert, an expert in curriculum and a fellow program graduate.

Annie has served in various ministry roles for over 25 years. Together, Annie and her husband (Coy) have over two decades of combined experience in the fields of mental health and residential treatment. She has given thousands of hours to reading, researching, working, and receiving multiple trainings and certificates in the fields of coaching, psychology, neuropsychology, and theology. Annie and her husband, Coy, live in Rapid City, SD. Together, they have four children.

Painful Pancreatitis

On March 12, 2026, I had a sudden onset of pancreatitis. This condition produced excruciating pain, greater than any other pain I’ve experienced. While I at first felt abandoned by the Lord, I knew his promise to never leave me nor forsake me. About halfway through my 6-day hospital stay, I began to experience the comfort of God as he presented four important lessons I could learn to help me persevere. In this podcast, I share my story and present the four ways God taught me to deal with pain. These lessons can be applied to physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational pain. I pray that God will use the lessons he taught me to draw you closer into his presence and prepare to face any pain that comes into your life.

This first episode will give you suggestions from Scripture for resetting your spiritual life. The key passage is found in Ephesians 1:17-19 (NASB) in Paul’s prayers for the believers in Ephesus.

Paul prayed that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you

a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know

what is the hope of His calling,

what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and

what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.

Start the year by being more intentional in your relationship with the Lord!

Many years ago, when I begin considering serving the Lord as a Christian writer and speaker, he gave me a mission to focus my efforts. My full mission statement reads as follows: I will offer encouragement for life in a complicated world by inspiring people to choose hope, experience transformation, and recognize victory in our Lord, Jesus Christ. Today’s episode is in preparation for a new weekly blog and monthly newsletter titled Encouragement for Life. What else would I name it? My first attempt to offer encouragement and kickoff a mental health ministry, at God’s design, was in writing and publishing a workbook. In This Corner: Battling Depression from Inside the Ring was published in 2005. 20 YEARS AGO!! A couple of years ago I republished it as In This Corner: Battling Trauma and Mental Illness from Inside the Ring because trauma did play a big part in my mental health challenges. To celebrate my 20 years, I’m hosting a book club and creating a launch team to draw attention to this important workbook. Please join me! Just follow the link below.

This episode is a presentation that was given at a virtual workshop for the Faith+Mental Health conference in May 2025. Caroline has nearly 20 years of experience as a leader for a Christ-centered mental health support group where she emphasizes hope, transformation, and victory. This approach is based on the Spirit-led process God revealed to Caroline in reflecting on her own recovery journey. This unique perspective will challenge leaders of support groups, small groups, Sunday School classes, etc., to encourage their group members to choose hope in the midst of challenging situations, experience God’s transformation as they grow and heal, and recognize victory in their daily lives. The presentation will include definitions of key terms; how to incorporate hope, transformation, and victory in each meeting; tips for encouraging holistic transformation; sample scenarios that might occur in a group setting; and the use of a confidentiality covenant.

What does the church think about mental health?

In this first episode of 2023, Caroline has a discussion with a long-time friend that addresses one of the main purposes of the Mental Health and Faith podcast — taking a closer look at mental health and the church. Their conversation includes the following topics:

How does the church address mental health? Or does it?

What is the difference between long-term mental illness and situational mental health conditions?

Situational vs. clinical conditions from medicalnewstoday.com. “Situational depression occurs after life-altering events, but clinical or major depression has a range of causes and is a longer-term condition.”

Definition of situational depression from verywellmind.com. “Situational depression involves symptoms of depression that are related to stress. It is not a recognized clinical disorder but is an informal term used to describe what may be more formally diagnosed as a type of adjustment disorder.”

Information on situational conditions from Nami.org. “Situational stress can generate emotional or behavioral symptoms that look and feel very much like clinical depression. Depending on the degree of symptomatic discomfort, the treatment plan for situational or stress-related symptoms may be supportive or psychoeducational in nature and often includes the teaching of simple coping tools (find some below) that can help combat the impact of everyday stress. Remember that certain types of anxiety and sadness are often a normal response to difficult or overwhelming circumstances.”

What can the church to do meet the mental health needs and other needs of church members and the community?

This episode is a replay of Episode 18 – The Cycle of Recovery (Part 1) – Hope, originally published in April 2023.

Find Hope

In this first episode of a three-part series, Caroline introduces the Cycle of Recovery. In reflecting on her recovery journey, Caroline recognized the need to find hope, experience transformation, and recognize victory. Today, she shares her insights on recovery and hope.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11, New Living Translation)

What is Recovery?

A definition of recovery from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) states that

“Recovery is a process of change through which people improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.” (https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/recovery)

Where can you find hope?

Caroline mentions three ways you can find hope:

By reading stories of hope in the Bible

By joining a support group or finding people in your life who have experienced similar struggles

By observing the world around you to see where Go is at work.

A New Creation

As we seek to grow in our spiritual lives, we have hope, joy, and peace. We will realize we God has a purpose for us in life. When we grow in our spiritual lives, we will improve our mental health as well.In the second episode on January’s “All Things New” series, Caroline teaches from two passages in two letters from Paul about how we become can become a New Creation. These are the only two verses in the whole of Scripture that uses the phrase “new creation.”

Galatians 6:15b – What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.i ch. 12:2; Rom. 16:7; Gal. 1:22

The New Covenant

When the people of Israel were rescued from slavery in Egypt by the Lord, He established a covenant with them that would be impossible to keep. In His perfect timing, God revealed the New Covenant to take its place. Caroline reads from Exodus, Jeremiah, and Luke in this episode comparing the first conditional covenant with the unconditional eternal covenant. Below is a 10-point comparison between the old and the new. Thanks be to Christ, our Lord!

Old Covenant (Exodus 19:1-7)
New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

Established at specific time (Exodus 19:1). After leaving Egypt.
To be established “on that day” – no specific time announced. (Jeremiah 31:31) Jesus’s death and resurrection established it.

God’s instructions were contained in the “Book of the Covenant” – the Ten Commandments and other laws. (Exodus 20:1, 24:7)
God’s instructions are written on our hearts. (Jeremiah 31:33) “Instructions” implies we are to follow God’s expectations, commands, and directions, but not in a legalistic sense.

Conditional covenant: Israel agreed to obey. God promised to make them his people, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. (Exodus 19:5-6)
Unconditional covenant: “I will be their God, they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33) We participate in the covenant through faith and God’s grace. (Ephesians 3:6)

The people were afraid to talk to God face-to-face. They relied on Moses. (Exodus 20:18)
We can have a personal relationship with God. Jesus is our mediator. (Hebrews 9:15). We can come into God’s presence because of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.

The place of worship and sacrifice – the earthly tabernacle (Hebrews 9:1)
Worship anywhere. Jesus entered the heavenly tabernacle. (Hebrews 9:11)

Confirmation of covenant: Blood of animals spilled and sprinkled on altar and people (Exodus 24:6-8)
Confirmation of new covenant: The bread and cup, representing Jesus’ body and blood. (Luke 22:20)

Covenant required ongoing sacrifices. There were penalties for sin. (The Law; Hebrews 10:3, 11)
Covenant based on a one-time, once-for-all sacrifice. (Hebrews 10:12). We are set free from the penalty for sin. (Hebrews 9:15)

Special sacrifices in the Holy of Holies – behind the curtain. (Hebrews 9:3) Only the high priest could enter once a year.
No sacrifices are required accept of ourselves. The curtain was torn when Jesus died. (Matthew 27:50-52) All who believe have access to God. (Ephesians 2:18)

Symbols – The Ark of the Covenant: held the manna, staff, and the Ten Commandment tablets. Symbols of God’s covenant to Israel. (Hebrews 9:4)
No earthly symbols needed. The Holy Spirit is our guarantee. (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) There is nothing wrong with symbols and sacraments, but they are not necessary to remind us of God’s covenant.

Our sin required sacrifice.
Our sin has been paid for by the blood of Christ. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” (Jeremiah 31:34)

New Heavens and a New Earth

The fourth and final episode in the All Things New series looks at three passages in Scripture — the only three passages — that use the phrase “new heavens and new earth.”

Isaiah 65:17-19

God speaks to his people through the prophet Isaiah to give them a glimmer of hope in the midst of being judged by God for disobedience. He promises to create a new heavens and a new earth, a place where he will dwell with his people, a place without mourning or tears.

Revelation 21:1-7

The apostle, John, sees a vision in which Jesus gives him a glimpse into heaven. John sees the new heavens and new earth that Isaiah wrote about, The new Jerusalem is coming down from heaven where God will be with his children. A place without weeping or pain.

2 Peter 3:8-13

Peter refers to God’s promise of a new heaven and new earth (from Isaiah’s prophecy) as something we look forward to. We are to wait patiently for Christ’s return, knowing that God does not want anyone to perish. While we wait, we are to tell others about Jesus!

Affirmations & Journaling

In this third of four episodes on wellness, Caroline shares information on how to use affirmations and journaling to improve mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Affirmations

Using affirmations and accompanying Scriptures, a person can retrain their thoughts to line up with the truth of God’s Word. They will begin to accept their identity as a beloved child of God and heir with Christ while hiding Scripture in their hearts.

Journaling

Journaling gives individuals an opportunity to express themselves in a healthy way. Whether journaling prayers, emotional experiences, or the events in daily life, journaling sometimes reveals surprising feelings or memories that transfer from the subconscious to the paper (or computer document) you’re writing on. Journaling prayers is especially beneficial in growing closer to the Lord.

Caroline closes out her four-part series on wellness by discussion spiritual wellness. Two key activities for spiritual growth are prayer and Bible study.

Prayer
The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Neibuhr (1892-1971, German theologian)

https://www.prayerfoundation.org/dailyoffice/serenity_prayer_full_version.htm
God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will, so that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

Caroline also shared the ACTS prayer as a model for prayer.
A=Adoration
C=Confession
T=Thanksgiving
S=Supplication (petition, praying for needs for self and others).

Prayer Assignment:

Write a prayer expressing your pain, struggles, doubts, questions, etc. God can take whatever you have to say. He wants you to come before his throne and pour out your heart to him. So pour away.

Write a prayer thanking God for listening. Offer words of praise for the blessings in your life.

Write a prayer, asking God to make his presence known to you throughout this process of recovery and into the future. Express your commitment to healing and health by whatever means God designs.

Bible study

When it comes to the Bible, Caroline suggests both reading and studying. One suggested method of studying includes four questions to ask after reading a passage.

Studying God’s Word

Begin with prayer, asking God to bring insights and understanding to the passage you are about to read.

Read a passage from scripture (a few verses at a time is usually plenty when you are first starting)

Look back over the passage, meditate on the words, and ask yourself the following questions:

What is happening in the context of the passage? Refer to a few verses before and after the assigned passage for greater understanding.

What do I learn about God?

What are some principles, or teachings, I can identify in the passage?

How can I apply God’s words in my current situation?

End in prayer, specifically asking God to help you live out his word in your daily life.

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7, NASB)

Dentistry involves so much more than cleaning teeth. Dentist Timothy Doolin, DMD shares incredible insights on how the development of our tongue and facial structure can affect our ability to breathe, sleep, and develop our minds and bodies in a healthy way. He provides biblical support as well as many references and resources. Dr. Doolin also introduces four methods for improving tongue development and breathing skills that will also lead to positive mental health and wellness.

Tim referenced the following books about breathing: Breath, by James Nestor; The Biology of Belief, by Bruce Lipton; Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life, by George Catlin.

Judith Vander Wege has been a Christian freelance writer for 44 years. On today’s episode, she shares about the heartache she’s endured over her life and how God has walked with her through the pain and grief. Judith shared insights about grief from her book, Annalisa’s Journey through Grief. See the book on Amazon.

suggestions for Coping with Grief
What are the things that helped Annalisa cope with her grief?

1. It helped that a kind, concerned and respected friend was the one who brought her the news.
2. He let her cry without giving her platitudes, and acted sympathetic and patient.
3. It’s best not to say much while the griever is adjusting to the shock of the death.
4. Annalisa’s aunt was with her, who was also grieving. She said, “We’ll make it through.”
5. The one who brought the news (Pastor) prayed with them.
6. Annalisa’s dad was her aunt’s brother so they could support each other and understand.
7. They knew God is holy and righteous, and that he uses evil for good for those who love him.
8. It helped that neighbors and church friends were kind and helpful and sympathetic.
9. It helped Annalisa to reach out to Brenda (her bully) to try to help her and pray for her.
10.Favorite songs help.
11. Realizing other people have grief, also, helps.
12. It helps to have an older Christian loved one, who has gone through grief, remind of what God’s word says and help to understand about God and His love.
13. It helps to attend a Grief Support Group, especially if they are around the same age.
14. Realize that varied emotion are normal. It’s ok to cry, to express feelings of guilt, fears, etc.

The Mental Health and Faith: A Closer Look program presents a series of episodes on Writing Your Way to Recovery. Throughout June 2024, Caroline shares content originally created for presentations at two different mental health conferences in Missouri. Today’s episode explores how journaling can be beneficial in working your way to healing.

Journaling

Thanks to my fellow author and poet, Sharon Shoemaker, for the 8 Tips for Effective Journaling that are presented in this episode. (No cheating, you’ll have to listen to hear them!)
