This summer, I worked with a student who had always struggled in school, especially with reading in heavy subjects like history. Bright, intuitive, and deeply dyslexic, he failed his Grade 8 history exam and was required to rewrite it in summer school. The amount of material he had to review was overwhelming — not just for him, but even for me as his tutor. That’s when we turned to AI tools like ChatGPT and NotebookLM. What happened next transformed more than his exam result, it changed how he saw himself as a learner. In this post, I’m sharing how we used AI to make studying accessible and empowering, and what it means for neurodiverse students everywhere.

This summer I worked with a student, with a very dyslexic learning profile, who had always struggled in school. This year his biggest challenge was his grade 8 history course. He ended up failing his end of year exam with a 57%, only a few short percentage points below a pass. His school then insisted that he attend summer school and re-write the exam at the beginning of August. He’s incredibly smart, curious, and intuitive. But every time he sat down to study, he felt overwhelmed. The amount of material. The way it was presented. The pressure. The fact that he struggles in test-taking scenarios meant that it just never clicked with a passing grade. And when I looked at all the material he needed to “re-learn” before his exam re-write, I too was overwhelmed by the large volume of content.

So, we tried something different.

We used ChatGPT to simplify the textbook language and generate summaries in bullet-point form. Then using those summaries, we entered them into NotebookLM to organize his notes and create study guides, briefing documents, timelines and a podcast on each chapter. He also made old-school handwritten flashcards of the vocabulary on small neon cue cards in different colors for each section. I showed him how to talk to the tools, how to prompt, how to guide, how to think alongside the AI instead of having it think for him.

He went from frozen and frustrated to prepared and confident. And the best part? He started believing in his own ability to succeed, because he finally had tools that worked with the way his brain works.

That one experience reminded me of something I’ve seen over and over again in my work: neurodiverse students are not broken… our systems are. And AI can be a turning point.

Why Neurodiversity and AI Belong in the Same Conversation

For years, I’ve watched bright, capable students get penalized for not learning the “right” way. A kid with dyslexia who’s brilliant at problem-solving but dreads reading. A student with ADHD who can explain complex ideas but has messy notes. A child with mathlexia who understands big-picture logic but crumbles under timed drills.

They’re not the problem.

The problem is a system that still expects everyone to learn the same way and measures success by outdated standards.

That’s why I believe AI is such a powerful opportunity. It’s not a shortcut or a cheat code. It’s a way in.

What AI Can Do for Neurodiverse Students

Here’s what I’ve seen AI do firsthand, not in theory, but in real tutoring sessions with real students who’ve shown me what they create with AI:

Clarify confusing content. AI can summarize long, dense chapters into bite-sized points.

Help organize information. From study schedules to to-do lists, it helps structure chaotic minds.

Practice, quiz, reinforce. Flashcards, practice tests, memory boosters which are all customizable.

Bridge accessibility gaps. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech tools make content usable.

Adapt to learning styles. Visual learners can build mind maps. Verbal learners can request explanations.

In short, AI doesn’t take away the learning, it literally makes it possible.

Tools I Recommend (and My Students Use)

Here are a few that come up constantly in my work with neurodiverse students:

ChatGPT – for simplifying notes, brainstorming, explaining confusing ideas in simple language (even in math).

NotebookLM – to turn their own notes or handouts into study guides, quizzes, briefing documents, timelines and podcasts.

Otter.ai – to record and transcribe lectures.

MindMeister – to create mind maps that organize complex ideas visually.

Speechify – for text-to-speech reading support.

Quizlet AI – to build flashcards and study smarter.

And yes, I’ve created tutorial worksheets for every one of these. You can find them at maxlexia.myshopify.com, made specifically for neurodiverse learners and the parents/teachers who support them.

It’s Not About Replacing Effort. It’s About Redirecting It.

I know some people worry that AI will make kids lazy or do the work for them.

That’s not what I’m seeing. Not at all!

When students are supported by AI the right way, they actually:

Feel more organized

Manage large volumes of course content in concise ways

Ask better questions

Learn more independently

Feel proud of what they’re accomplishing

The key is to teach them how to use AI as a tool, not a crutch.

What Parents and Teachers Can Do

If you’re a parent or educator, you don’t need to be a tech expert. But you do need to be open to the idea that the traditional ways might not work for every brain.

Try the tools out yourself.

Model how to use them ethically.

Encourage exploration; AI can unlock learning in ways that weren’t possible before.

And if you want help? That’s why I built Maxlexia.com. To offer real support, built from real experience, for real students.

Final Thought

AI isn’t magic. It won’t erase every challenge. But it can be the difference between “I can’t do this” to “I’ve got this.”

And for a neurodiverse kid who’s spent years saying the first, this change in mindset is everything.

Let’s help our students get ahead of the W-AI-VE.

Oh, and what was the result of my student’s history exam re-write?…

84%!

Noah embodies the traits of resilience and perseverance!

Listen as he reflects on his academic experiences. Initial discouragement when he began in the learning support program in his school at which time his peers would judge him and equate intellectual ability with a learning profile that required accommodations.

His self-esteem took a hit.

Then in grade 10, things began to click and Noah took off academically!

For many students with dyslexia the school year and final exams

are a long and gruelling process…

They can be totally drained at this point in the year and really need the summer vacation time to decompress and to recharge for the next academic year.

Sending a student like this directly into summer school for extra math help is often completely ineffective.

They are exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally and require this downtime to rest and replenish.

Any material presented at this time may not “upload” and retention may be an issue into the next school year.

A more effective approach, is to begin working a week or two before the start of the next grade, when students are refreshed and better able to focus and retain the content. Previewing material is also extremely effective at this time for preparing students to have successful academic outcomes in the upcoming year.

Here we go!!!

AI is here to stay…how will we steer our way through for the best outcomes?

Here is an AI generated list of the benefits of AI:

Automation: AI can automate repetitive and mundane tasks, enabling humans to focus on more creative and strategic tasks.

Improved efficiency and productivity: With AI, businesses can improve their processes and workflows, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity.

Better decision making: AI can analyze large amounts of data and provide insights that humans may not be able to see. This can help decision makers make more informed decisions.

Personalization: AI can be used to personalize experiences for individuals, such as suggesting products or services that are tailored to their preferences.

Improved customer service: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can provide 24/7 customer support, answer common queries, and resolve issues quickly.

Increased safety: AI can be used to detect potential hazards and prevent accidents in industries such as healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing.

Cost savings: By automating tasks and improving efficiency, businesses can save costs on labor and other resources.

Overall, AI has the potential to revolutionize various industries and improve the quality of life for individuals.

And an AI generated list of potential problems:

While AI has many potential benefits, there are also several potential problems that need to be addressed. Here are some of the key issues associated with AI:

Bias: AI systems can be biased, which means they may reflect and reinforce existing societal biases, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes.

Lack of transparency: Some AI systems are “black boxes,” meaning that it is difficult to understand how they arrive at their decisions, making it difficult to identify and correct errors or biases.

Job displacement: The increased automation of tasks and jobs through AI can lead to job displacement and unemployment, particularly for low-skilled workers.

Security risks: AI systems can be vulnerable to cyberattacks and hacking, leading to potential breaches of sensitive information and security risks.

Privacy concerns: AI systems can collect and analyze large amounts of personal data, raising concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse or abuse.

Regulation challenges: The rapid development of AI technology has created challenges for regulators and policymakers, who may struggle to keep up with the pace of change and ensure that AI is developed and deployed responsibly.

Unintended consequences: AI systems can have unintended consequences, such as causing social or economic disruption, creating new ethical dilemmas, or even exacerbating existing problems.

Overall, addressing these challenges will require ongoing research, collaboration, and investment from policymakers, technologists, and other stakeholders to ensure that AI is developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner.

There is some debate and discussion on social media about whether dyslexia is actually a superpower.

And if it is, why doesn’t it always show up as such?

There are many factors leading to these conclusions, but the main one, is that the traditional school system is not set up in such a way as to recognize dyslexic thinking and allow students to shine their dyslexic brilliance.

How can we help change this?

Early diagnosis and intervention

Targeted support

Accommodations

Increased teacher training to help them better understand the dyslexic student

Share with teachers actionable tools and best practices for dyslexia

This is MY area of expertise… math and dyslexia and dyscalculia.

I have discovered that the magical “cure” for dyscalculia can be found with the assistive technology of a CALCULATOR.

Students with dyslexia and dyscalculia often have poor number sense which can affect many aspects of their performance in math.

With early access and proper training on how to effectively use a calculator, there is no need to hold students back in math merely because they cannot memorize the multiplication tables.

The result is that they can succeed in any academic and professional pursuit that has a math component!

As the repetitive messages from early traumatic academic experiences begin to sink in over time, the dyslexic life journey leads to a negative script for your inner dialogue.

This becomes the words by which you define yourself and this story then becomes your story. Giving power to these words can lead to a lifelong cycle of failures in all areas of your life.

You may never live up to your full potential unless you begin to re-write the script with your OWN words. Only then will you be able to see and celebrate your dyslexic brilliance!

Dyslexia is referred to as a disability and a learning disability.

In my experience working with my dyslexic peeps, I have seen everything BUT disability. I have witnessed incredible intuitive, creative, dyslexic brilliance and it blows my mind every day!

In this podcast I explore some of the early traumatic experiences that can have longterm psychological and emotional impacts on a person’s life and discuss some of the ways we can become more innovative in the way we provide education to reach and teach ALL students.

By providing teachers and educators with more training we can help them better Recognize, Optimize and Maximize their work with dyslexic students!

How Maxlexia evolved from Mathlexia…

Maxlexia was not something that I created intentionally… rather it evolved naturally from years of my work exploring, defining and curing Mathlexia.

I work one on one with people who have dyslexia and who are struggling in math. This experience has blown my mind and opened my eyes to the incredible intuitive and creative math abilities of students who are actually failing math in school.

As I began to reflect and formalize how I was getting these dyslexic students from math grades of 30% upto 80-90% I realized that although my work involved a solid component of addressing math content… my real work was in rebooting their dyslexic life experiences.

When a child with dyslexia has early traumatic academic experiences, their self-confidence and self-esteem are crushed at a young age and they carry this baggage for years. This can negatively impact all aspects of their personal and professional lives… sometimes forever

Welcome to the MAXLEXIAâ„¢ Educator Excellence satellite series!

Here we will explore the ways in which we can:

* effectively reach and teach dyslexic students in the classroom* build and maintain self-esteem and self-confidence in vulnerable students* be able to recognize dyslexic students, particularly in math* optimize teaching methods and maximize every dyslexic student’s academic success!

The term Mathlexia was created as a result of my experience working with clients with dyslexia who were chronically struggling in math.

It is a compilation of learning profiles that is primarily characterized by dyslexia, but which also encompasses other learning disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, anxiety and depression.

This EdEx series of podcasts and online courses will delve into all things Mathlexic and examine how educators can best led their students to academic success!

This first podcast, “The WHY of Mathlexia” focuses on three main components:

* Moving from desperation to celebration with a new dyslexia diagnosis* Motivation and inspiration to see dyslexia in a new and positive light* Celebration of dyslexic brilliance and the intuitive math abilities associated with it.
