Thank you for sending the question and first let me start off by saying congratulations on landing the interview, because it’s challenging for some job seekers to even get the interview. So congratulations that’s a great accomplishment! All right, so here are 3 steps to a successful interviewing.

1. Research the company before you get the interview.

• For example, are you on social media? Are you on LinkedIn, Twitter  and Facebook? I know Raniesha is on LinkedIn because she reached out to me that way. Let’s go a step further. Are you following the companies where you would like to work on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook? Are you a part of their LinkedIn Group? Some companies actually have LinkedIn Pages and Groups on there. So, I would suggest to definitely join their groups, listen to their conversations, see what’s going on there. That could help you prepare for the interview.

• Do you have a blog? (WordPress or Blogger) I would strongly suggest get a blog and write about your industry. You can write about articles that you read, things that people are saying on the Group, add your opinion and your professional opinion about things, and things like that. That would be great to do, even on interviews.

2. I would suggest scheduling an interview, an informational interview. Interview someone in the company where you would like to work. I would strongly suggest interviewing the Head of the Department. Ask them questions that you would really want to know about that industry. You know, how did he/she get into the industry? What would they suggest that people do that’s interested in getting into the industry? Where do he/she see the company that they’re currently at in the next five years or what challenges are they facing in that company? And things like that, because this is very important for you to know, because the issues that they’re having at that company may be the same challenges that they’re having at other companies because it’s in the same industry. So, I would definitely say setup an informational interview. If you have a blog, then you can post your interview on your blog and let that person know. “Hey, I just wrote an article about you,” and I think that’s pretty impressive.

Here are some suggestions from an article that I read 10 Job Interview Tips From A CEO Headhunter By: Russell S. Reynolds Jr. with Carol E. Curtis Published on: June 11, 2012 One of the things mentioned in the article is that you want to prepare for your interview ahead of time and you know, most likely, they’re going to ask behavioral questions. They’re going to ask questions like: why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself? When you are asked this question, Recruiters just want to know about your career and you want to be short and straight to the point. You want to make sure that you’re, not going on and on and on. Hiring Managers just want to know the trajectory of your career and to get a sense of what you think is important and how have you performed these things. So, make sure you focus on your strengths.

Oh! One more thing. You want to focus on what interests the interviewer because if you go on a tangent about something totally different, you’ve lost the interviewer. You want to focus on what the interviewer wants to know. This just helps the recruiter make sure that you’re qualified for the position.

The other thing that it stated in the article was of course you know Recruiters are going to ask the weakness question. That is just something that they’re going to ask, and that’s okay. The key to answering this question is to be confident in the fact that your weakness doesn’t make you less of a great person to be for that position. Recruiters just want to know how are you going to handle this weakness question. What are you going to tell the recruiter? So, make sure you let the recruiter know that you’re working on that. You’re working on your weakness, and how you’re working on it.

3. Keep your interview answers short and straight to the point. Now, when I say keep it short and straight to the point, you want to use the CAR method. You want to tell the recruiter what was the C – challenge. When they ask you the question use an example from a previous job that you had. Also, you can use your internship. The A is Action. You want to tell them what action steps did you take to solve that challenge. Then, last but not least, is the R – the Results. You want to tell them what results did you give. Here’s an example of Raniesha’s C.A.R method using your internship:

• So, when they ask you a question, your challenge part would be: “During my internship last summer, I was responsible for…” Okay? So, that would be the C.
• The A, which is the Action, would be: “I designed a new promotional package to go out to the students,” and elaborate a little bit more on that.
• The R would be Results. You could say something like: “We used some of the student’s great ideas and raised attendance past the numbers from the previous year.” That’s could be your CAR method.

Would you like your résumé critiqued? If so, all you have to do is send a request by email. In the Subject Line, type: “Rescue My Résumé,” and your name, then attachment the resume in a Word document so I can critique your it on Rescue My Résumé Segment of this show.

Here are 5 tips that you need to consider when creating your résumé.

1. One is make sure that you tailor your résumé to a specific position. Looking at TJ’s résumé, he has tailored it to a specific position that he’s interested in. You don’t want to make it difficult for the recruiter or the hiring manager to decide what type of job that you’re looking for and, in TJ’s case, what type of teaching position is he looking for. It’s important to tailor your resume.
2. Target colleges and universities where you would like to work. The reason why you’re going to do that is because you’re going to do some research. Take a look at past and present faculty member’s LinkedIn profile where you would like to work. Research where they worked previously before they started working at the college or university. Where did they teach, write it down, because you could try to get a position at that college or university where they used to work.
3. Research past and present LinkedIn profiles of faculty member’s skills. This helps you to understand that most likely you need to add those skills to your résumé. The college or university is looking for those particular skills, so definitely use LinkedIn to your advantage. It’s a free resource, so take advantage of it.
4. Schedule informational interviews, they’re so important. You want to try to get an informational interview with the Head of the Department where you would like to teach, or you can also get an informational interview set up with the recruiter if that’s possible. Targeted faculty members that used to work there in the past or currently working there because they are such a great resource. You can get so much information from past and present faculty members like what they look for when hiring someone at that college or university. Faculty can give you information about their previous colleges and universities where they used to work. Faculty members can advise TJ what to do or what would help him get the position. TJ’s résumé is for a teaching position at a college or university, so it’s going to be a lot different and I would strongly suggest that all job seekers set up an informational interview. Talk to current and past employees, faculty members; ask if they can critique your résumé.
5. Create a resume checklist. You can’t go wrong with a checklist to help create your resume. On the checklist put all the steps above, it will help to make sure that you don’t miss important components on your resume. Make sure your contact information is located at the top of the resume, aligned correctly and in your summary, there’s no fluff. Focus on your experience, self-management skills, and accomplishments.

Your resume should be easy to read within 30 seconds. Let’s just face it recruiters are not going to stay on your résumé very long. Recruiter’s responsibility is to fill the job quickly with the best person qualified.

Make sure that you have core components such as, your strengths, general skills, computer skills, and of course industry-specific skills. I would also suggest, that job seekers have testimonials on their resume. I’m not saying a whole book or like seven people, but at least one strong testimonial from someone in an upper management or higher-level position. Maybe the Dean of one of TJ’s previous college or university where he used to work or something like that. Have a quote that’s one to three sentences long of skills that a co-worker said about you would be great. The testimonial needs to be specifically about your accomplishments. I think a testimonial would be very impressive to have on a job seekers résumé. Have quantitative accomplishments on your resume. Make sure that you are using action words. If you no longer work with the company, college or university, make sure you use past tense, because you no longer work there.

Of course have your education on your resume. What I noticed on TJ’s résumé, is that he had his education at the top. Now, this is just my opinion and that’s how a résumé is. Everybody’s opinion as to what they think is best, so there really is no right or wrong way to write a resume. There’s just some ways that are better than others. I would strongly suggest, because TJ’s have experience, he really doesn’t need to have his education at the top, because it’s going to be the assumption that TJ’s have the education piece; that’s why TJ’s want to teach. So, I would suggest TJ put his education at the bottom. A lot of times, when recruiters see education at the top, they’re making the assumption that you don’t have that much experience. I would consider making that change.

I notice TJ has quantitative measures on his résumé, which is great. TJ doesn’t have italics on his resume, so it’s very neat and easy to read on the eyes. There are some spacing issues that I see, so I would correct those, but otherwise I think TJ’s résumé is great, outstanding and I’m impressed. I’m not an expert in writing résumés for faculty, so I would definitely say contact someone in your network and have them take a look at your resume. In my opinion, TJ’s résumé looks very good; it’s nice and neat not overwhelming or too long. TJ has a lot of information that is necessary for him to indicate on his resume. So, I think TJ did an awesome job, and I just want to thank him for sending his résumé to me to be critiqued.

Let’s start off with the word ‘Intentions’ alright. I’m just being honest with you. When I meet you, whether it’s online, whether it’s in person, over the phone, at an event…I don’t say…when I first meet you, ‘what is your intention?’ I don’t say that. That’s just not me, I’m a true believer that…if I talk to you on the phone or if I get a message from you, an email or I see you in person at an event, even if we just happen to be at the same gas pump at the same time pumping gas. I just feel like things happen for a reason and it was meant for me to meet you at the time that it happens. So, I don’t think of it as…what’s your intention. I don’t know maybe it might be me, maybe this person didn’t mean it in a negative way or maybe I’m being defensive I don’t know.

Okay, so let me tell you what happen. I shared this with my friend because we go way back. So, let me tell you what I do. This is what I do sometimes, every Thursday if you listen to the show I give people shout outs. I give you a shout out because it’s just my way of saying thank you, that’s why it’s called ‘Thank You Thursday’. I don’t think we thank each other enough and I think most of us, want to be heard, want to be seen, want to be recognized for the work that we do. Some people just like the attention alright, let’s just keep it real. I just figured you know… I’m going to dedicate Thursdays to say thank you to my peeps, you know what I mean? If you’re following me on Twitter, LinkedIn whatever it may be it’s just my way of saying thank you. Also, if you leave comments I give you a shout out two times because I say thank you at the time that you do it and then I put you on my blog and that’s why happened.

I posed a question because sometimes I put a question on the internet, LinkedIn groups, Facebook and Twitter and I get a lot of response back on LinkedIn I love that and I strongly suggest my job seekers do the same. See a lot of stuff I suggest to you, I’ve done it and so have my clients. So, it’s just what I do…alright. I post a question out there so I can get someone else’s opinion and so I could share it. I don’t remember what the question was but there’s this group leader on LinkedIn. I won’t be specific as to what’s the name of the group. She answered my question and what I tend to do is if you take the time out of your busy day to leave a comment and answer my question.

I figured the least I can do is give you the credit for what you just done especially, if you leave a good comment. So, I’ll cut and paste your comment and put it on my blog and I’ll also post a link to your LinkedIn profile so the readers can go directly to you. I also post your picture so, I’m giving you all the praise…I’m giving you all the credit because I don’t want my readers to think that’s what Jacqui said, that’s what Job Coach Jacqui said no, this is what you said! So, I thought to myself…I never had this issue before. I have been blogging since I think 2008 and I never ran across a situation like this before. So, that’s why I’m sharing this with you today. I was like, that’s a good comment I like her answer. She actually wrote a little bit of what I said on a previous show. I was like hey we answered the question kinda similar and I replied back to her comment ‘thank you for taking the time to do this and hey go to my blog www.jobcoachjacqui.com I just gave you a shout out!

Next thing I know, I get an email back stating ‘that’s plagiarism, you didn’t ask for my permission’. I thought to myself, wow! I thought plagiarism was when you take someone’s words and you don’t give them credit and you use those words as your own, you know what I mean? Another thing I was thinking was when someone posts something on social media isn’t it there for the public. Didn’t you post for people to see? So, I replied back by first saying I apologize but this is something I’ve always done. She pretty much was asking what my intention was. I told her my intention was to share this useful information to job seeker to help them get back to work. It’s another tip to help them get a job and I thought it was great and I wanted to give you credit where credit is due. This is a way for my network of over 11,000 people can read and hear what you had to say and she didn’t like it. So, I apologize and told her she threw me for a loop and this is the first time I’ve ever experience this.

I being kind because she went on and on, she went in on me! She was like plagiarism, legal stuff and blah…blah…blah and on…and on and I’m think woo Boo it ain’t that serious. Hey, if that’s how you take it, if you feelin’ that kinda way I’ll remove it…not a problem, no big deal. I told her that’s the intention of my blog, that’s why I’m on social media just to share information to help job seekers to get back to work.

How about she responds back, no keep my comment on your blog but I’m the group leader and I know what you’re doing. I know the reason why you did this is to earn money and to sell and blah…blah…blah. I was like really, because if you go to www.jobcoachjacqui.com I don’t think you will find on my blog me saying buy this or purchase this because I’m not selling anything. It’s free information!

No you don’t know my intentions or expectations, you got me all wrong! I just had to vent real quick. Did I go over my 15 minutes cause I really, really, really try to keep it short? I apologize if I went over fifteen minutes.

Do me a favor click on comment and let me know Jacqui you took it the wrong way or Jacqui she’s right you should have ask her for permission or do you agree with me, Jacqui you gave her the opportunity to allow her opinion to be seen and heard by your network and her network on a different platform.

I talked to my girlfriend (social media expert) and she was like just remove her. That’s why people are on social media to be seen, heard, accepted and recognized. She was like it’s out there, it’s on Google. Has she sent an email to Google and was like hey, I’m on your search engine. You didn’t ask for my permission to be put on your search engine.
