Welcome to the first edition of the Northeast Ohio Business Podcast. If you live and try to run a business Northeast Ohio you know you’ve got to be tough. Not only do we have bad winter weather, potholes, orange barrels and deer, but we’re also long-suffering Browns fans. Need I say more.

On the business side, the recession hit our area harder than most regions of the country. For this reason it takes a special breed to thrive as a business owner on the Northcoast. It requires a combination of guts, tenacity, smarts and flexibility to make it work

This podcast is all about people like this. It’s an opportunity for us to lean from their stories, successes, mistakes and insights.

Lisa Holly & Woody Melton - Art Handler

Our guest this week, Lisa Holly, president of Berea moving and storage and Wood-Lee International Art Handler. Lisa, together with her brother brother Woody found themselves as accidental business owners eight years ago when their mother was suddenly killed in a car crash.

Instead of reacting like a deer in headlights they sat down and decided to figure it out. They hired a business coach who helped them set clear objectives and a plan of action. Ever since they’ve been executing those plans while remaining laser focused on their objectives and their customers.

The best way to know Lisa story is to hear it straight from her. So take a few minutes and listen to the story of Lisa Holly.

Press:
Cleveland Plain Dealer article about Lisa and Woody's turnaround of the family business.

Lisa’s business coaches: Jack Mencini and Adam Sonnhalter from Maximum Value Partners

Lisa’s HR consultant Norma Delp from Signal Tree Resolutions

Lisa’s book recommendation: Good to Great by Jim Collins

I also talk about one of my favorite communication tools, Jing, which is a free app for creating short screen recordings and screen captures.

Speaking of keywords, many people tell us that they’re totally baffled and even intimidated by the process of finding good keywords. I make an attempt to clear up some of the mystery. This is a very important subject that we’ll continue to discuss in the future.

During the podcast I mentioned a Google keyword tool but failed to tell you the name. It is Google Keyword Planner. Its main purpose is to find keywords for Adwords (paid search) but, when used properly is a great tool to identify keywords for organic search. I’ll post a short how-to video about is soon.

This is the first regular edition of our podcast where I talk about the basic elements of an effective business website and the importance of being yourself (marketing-wise). This is particularly important if you're following the advice of a guru. Not all magic formulas fit everyone, so read between the lines to get the fundamentals a then make it your own.
Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.

Doris Taylor, director of regenerative medicine research at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, is the doctor I mentioned who is doing the "Ghost Heart" research. Here's her blog.

Here's a link to the interview Doris that I heard on NPR. I know this has nothing to do with marketing, but it's absolutely fascinating.

Here's a link to the interview Doris that I heard on NPR. I know this has nothing to do with marketing, but it's absolutely fascinating.

Mad Marketing Podcast with Marcus Sheridan on The Sales Lion.

I receive so many questions about marketing, website, WordPress and technical issues that affect our clients each week that I thought I’d start a podcast to answer them. Besides I like to talk.

It’s called The Independent Professional Podcast (I’m open to new ideas for the name). I’ll be publishing it semi-regularly at first, about every two weeks. Now that we’re getting into the holiday season it might be a little spotty.

I’ll be answering your questions and sharing information about helping independent professionals attract new clients and manage their business in the digital world.  In general we’ll focus on the opportunities and challenges of using technology to move our businesses forward. Here’s a list of  topics:

Attracting new clients

Managing the business

Managing / allocating your time attention and focus

Doing things more efficiently

Problem solving

Using the right tools (hardware, software, online services and physical products)

I don’t have all the answers and as an independent professional myself I’m on the same journey as you. So I’ll be learning right along with you and sharing my experiences as I go.

I’ll be keeping the show to about 30 minutes in length.

We’re working now to get it listed on iTunes which will be the best way to subscribe. Â I’ll keep you posted on this.
