In this episode we talk about Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers sequel, the world’s fastest archer, Ingress, and Google Fiber. So sit back, and catch up with us!

WARNING: This episode contains SPOILERS! Consider yourself WARNED!

 TV & Movies

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agent Coulson is alive and kicking! We talk about how magical of a place Tahiti is and we discuss how he came back after the first Avengers movie. Greg doesn’t feel that the rebirth of Agent Coulson was a very smooth integration to the movies, while Sheryl thinks it was a brilliant concept. We go over the main characters and describe their roles and the basic plot of season 1. We also liked how well they did integrate the story line of season 1 into the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1

Buy/Rent: iTunes | Amazon | Netflix

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

We loved this movie! Neither of us were big Captain America fans growing up, but we love the new movies. We also love how well Marvel has been integrating (apart from Coulson coming back to life in the T.V. series) all of the movies and story lines into one cohesive story. Sheryl really liked the inclusion of Falcon in this movie (go figure she loves birds), and we both really liked how the series tied into this movie pretty directly, and being able to see whats happening behind the big super heroes. Hydra infiltrating and taking over the giant, “big brother”, automated killing drones to take out anyone who doesn’t fit into Hydra’s very specific view of humanity is a scary thought.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Where the fuck is Thanos? Where the fuck is Ant-Man? Why are the teasers so dark and depressing? Still, we are really looking forward to this movie!

Dragon Age: Origins

We have been waiting for a good D&D style video game ever since we finished Baldur’s Gate 2 back on the PlayStation. Dragon Age: Origins really fills that role. It is a fun, detailed RPG that even for its age has beautiful graphics and a really really good story. The character creation is simple yet detailed just enough to make sure your character looks how you want. At first look, the three choices of classes seems really restrictive, but once you get into the game you realize that each class can be played very differently depending on your choices when leveling up and selecting feats, skills and talents. One of the biggest draws to the game is the deep story and they do a really good job at making you feel like an important character relatively quickly and you feel like a hero.

Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition

Cool Shit

Lars Anderson, Fastest Archer in the World

This guy is friggin amazing! Able to shoot three arrows (with extreme accuracy) in 0.6 seconds, grab arrows out of the air and fire them back in one fluid motion, and can even split incoming arrows mid-flight with his own! Watch the video and be amazed!

App of the Week

Ingress

Ingress is a ARMMORPG GPS-dependent game (say that 250,000 times fast, we dare you!) Now what that means is that it is an Augmented Reality Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Game which is GPS dependent. Ok, so basically all the players are “Agents” trying to wrest control of virtual portals placed in real-world locations from the other faction in an attempt to either help or deny the Shapers entrance into our world. Ok, so basically the Shapers are alien beings trying to come into our world and we are split into two factions, the Enlightened who believe the Shapers are humanities evolution, and the Resistance, who are trying to keep the Enlightened from letting mankind be enslaved by the alien race. Choose a side and join the game that is not a game.

Yes, Google is creating their own gigabit ISP service, yes, GIGABIT internet. 1000mbps. Our 50mbps seems so freakin’ slow now. They are also planning on offering TV and phone service also. Unfortunately they are only starting in a handful of cities right now, but will be expanding throughout the U.S. eventually. If you happen to be one of the luckiest fucks in the world and have Google Fiber, let us know your experience with it so far.

But before killing Marks, Jax has an interaction with the recurring weird homeless woman, who has a number of rumors about who she is and what she represents. Kurt Sutter (the creator of SoA) has stated in many interviews that she “is Jesus Christ”. She has appeared in quite a few episodes, but very few of her appearances has her saying anything. In the last episode she tells Jax “It’s time.” and gives him her blanket that he uses to camouflage himself to kill Marks. If she is Jesus Christ, why the fuck would she help a psychopathic, megalomaniac with gun tourettes kill another human being? Other people think Sutter is being coy and wants to let the fans decide what she is, some saying she is the Reaper or the Angel of Death (we pretty much agree with this rumor). Still others think she is the ghost of Emily Putner, the woman John Teller killed when he was in his fatal accident with the semi. The plot seems to be completely separate form the comics or the current show story line, albeit set in the same world, just in a different location with completely new characters. It also seems to be very family-focused, centering around two small families and their struggles in the new “zombie” apocalypse.
Greg’s Rant

Why the FUCK are we now explicitly labeling shows as ‘scripted’ or ‘un-scripted’? I mean, seriously, have we been so saturated with “reality” shows (and if you think those “reality” shows are unscripted, you are…O.K., Sheryl is telling me to be nice here) that we need to tell people that shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy” aren’t real, we have a serious issue. I mean, I would love to see the first “reality” show starring half-decomposed corpses walking around L.A., but for fucks sake, are we serious with this shit?

Gaming

Dead Space

The Dead Space series  was an exceptional series of games that skillfully merged sci-fi space adventure with survival horror, with a strong, STRONG emphasis on survival horror (which is why Greg couldn’t play most of them, he’s too scared). The first game gave us awesome mechanics like strategic dismemberment, using a mining laser as a main weapon, and awesome zero-g environments. The games ambiance and environmental effects are out of this world amazing. The story is very involving and interesting, but we wont give it away, we want you to play it. The sequel moves the story along nicely, with polished mechanics, and even better environmental ambiance you came to expect from the first game. The sequel also includes a horde-mode style multiplayer mode.

The real fun came with the third installment, with the co-op multiplayer mode. Greg actually jumped in with Sheryl on this one, completing the entire game as a duo. The story is as deep as you would expect, but instead of just making the secondary player a bland, generic additional gun, they actually made the off-character a CHARACTER. He even has his own storyline that you discover throughout the game. He even has his own scenes which Isaac can’t even see or be involved with. We thought this was a very well thought-out and implemented feature.

Gregs App pf the Week is iTV Shows 3, an iOS exclusive app that handles keeping track of all of the episodes for each show you watch in a very slick, elegant and simple UI. It does cost $2.99, but it is well worth it. The only downfall is that when the developer updates the app to a new major version, he makes it a separate app, which does incur another charge. However, this does not happen very often, and when he does do this, it is well worth coughing up the extra cash. If you haven’t drank the Apple kool-aid yet, Android has a very similar app that I haven’t used in a few years but when I did, it was he top of its game, SeriesGuide. Steam Machines (http://bit.ly/1FYJ9Fd)
We discuss Steams newest venture of creating a new type of console. Their Steam machines and accompanying SteamOS allow you to bring your PC game library to the big screen. With a custom controller and the ability to play (some of) your Steam library, we think that this new concept will help bridge the gap that is segregating the gaming community. Albeit, at its current stage, it doesn't look too promising since it is only compatible with Linux versions of the Steam library.
