What is a sensory inventory? When we notice what is happening around us by focusing on our senses, we are able to tune in to everything that is happening around us. So often our brain tunes our sense out (understandably) but what happens when we notice? If we take an inventory of some of things we see, hear, or feel then we can really notice when something is different. Also -- take a listen to hear how you can turn this experience into an intervention in itself!

In this episode, I talk a little bit about the power that space can bring to creativity! Not like outer space, but silence -- absence of doing -- the space of being. In this weeks challenge, you will find ways to utilize silence and create more space for yourself and for your clients. When we have more space -- we have more opportunity for new ideas to emerge!

In this episode, I am sharing our first creative self-care challenge! In light of recent events and dealing with some tough family health concerns, we will be taking some time to do some extra self-care in these next few weeks. Instead of interviews, we will posting a series of creative self-care challenges instead as we take some time to heal and get back to our groove. Once we are back in that place, we will be recording our 100th episode and releasing that (a Q&A episode!).

We want to hear how the challenge went for you! What ideas came up for you -- how was "yes and"ing??? Tag us on Instagram #ctucreativitychallenge or email us at Kate@creativetherapyumbrella.com

Ella shares with us what non directive play looks like in her work, how storytelling is an integral part of the work, and how symbols can be utilized throughout these experiences. Take a listen and enjoy!

Ella is a fully trained Art Psychotherapist. Her qualifications include: MA (Hons) in Art Therapy from Crawford College of Art and Design, PgD in Principles of Art Therapy from Crawford College of Art and Design, BA (Hons) in Design from NCAD, and Diplomas in Teletherapy and Play Therapy for adults and children. Ella is a fully accredited member of IACAT - The Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists.

Ella has worked with children, adolescents, young adults, and families. Her experience includes children going through foster care, struggling with separation in the family, autism, trauma, grief, and diverse mental and physical disabilities. Ella has also worked with adults within the psychiatric services, in areas including bipolar disorder, addiction and psychosis. Ella is interested in working with children as well as adults. She has seen that art therapy is a powerful and non-invasive way of helping a person work through difficulties they are experiencing. Very often people can find it challenging to verbalise their issues. Help and support in the form of Art Therapy as such presents a very effective solution. By creating a safe and secure environment for her clients, Ella uses the creative process as a way of helping and guiding her clients through any issues they may have. Ella uses Art therapy, Play therapy, Sandtray play therapy, therapeutic story telling to name a few within her work. She uses a non directive approach throughout sessions with children, letting the child chose the narrative of the sessions. "It is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self"-D.W.

In this episode, Amanda shares her ingenuity with incorporated the concept of “Design Thinking” into the therapy world. She shares the catalyst for applying this idea originally and has since continued to explore the possibilities of this helpful skill. Amanda has presented on this topic at numerous conferences.

Design thinking is a framework for handling problems and building new opportunities through creative thinking, innovation, and experimentation. The process includes five actions that are focused on the “client”. This non-linear process includes the following actions: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Amanda gives us examples of how this process can be used in therapy to better create more dynamic, functional, and successful interventions. She explains that this process is continuous and that complacency doesn’t fit into this model!

Take a listen to learn more on how to get more creative by using this process to ground your actions, interventions, and thinking!

Amanda Bryant, is the owner of Colorado Music Therapy Services and has over twenty years of experience working with people with neurodevelopmental differences, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. Amanda has developed numerous music therapy programs throughout the Denver/Boulder Metro region and is a regular presenter at conferences.

In this episode, I share my experience with Selective Mutism as a child and how creative resilience was a factor in me coming out of my shell. I was a REALLY shy kid. Like almost got held back in kindergarten because I wouldn’t talk to anyone. The turned-my-head-away-from-anyone-who-looked-at-me type of shy.

BUT. Put me in front of a tree and I would figure out how to climb it; to the very top. Throw me a kickball and I’d come up with a new game with my best friend/cousin. Tell me a story and I’d write three more endings. Give me one of those awesome square washcloth-making loom crafts and I’d make 50 of them in a day. (Bless my mom, she claimed everyone at work bought them for $1 each. Years later I found them hidden in a drawer!)

And that was the saving grace for me. I had parents who endlessly supported my creativity throughout my childhood, teens, and early adult years. My dad being a musician was always giving me a high-five for picking up another instrument. My mom, a total craft-a-holic, would allow me to watch over her shoulder for hours as she made wood-burned spoons, Christmas dough ornaments, and stained glass stars (she made those for our wedding!).

With all of that support, I eventually broke out of my shell and flourished in the right circumstances. I was lucky.

So many of the children we work with don’t have incredibly supportive parents. So many children have faced insurmountable trauma. So many children have developmental differences that make even the simplest things, incredibly difficult.

And creativity might just be their resiliency factor. Their superpower. Their out.

The research shows that creativity supports self-esteem, emotional expression, individuality, self-worth, and much more. As clinicians, we can provide that space for our clients and nurture that creativity muscle. But, we have to do some work on our end.

If you haven’t read the Quick Guide to Boost Creativity, don’t hesitate. Simple things we can do can exponentially impact the children that we work with. Opening our eyes to their creativity, we can help them overcome the most difficult obstacles they may face.

Now you know the story of why I am so passionate about this work. I’d love to hear your story!!!

In this episode, Rachel tells us about her journey to becoming a music therapist. With her unique background in communication disorders, Rachel is also a huge supporter of interdisciplinary treatment and gives some great tips about collaborating within the school system. She also gives us a peek into the world of Music Therapy E-books, a website dedicated to ebooks of all kinds! Go check out the site here and enjoy the episode!A little about Rachel: "Being a music therapist is my dream job. Hands-down. After taking a bit of a winding path on the way to becoming a MT-BC (more on that, here), I was able to finish my B.A. in Communication Disorders from Truman State University and M.A. in Music Therapy from the University of Iowa. I’ve had the opportunity and honor to use music therapy with children, teens, and adults with communication disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. On the side, I enjoy all things web design, photography, writing e-books (“Children’s Songs for Therapy”, and, “Listen, Sing, Speak!”), jogging with Jolene (my 7 year old pup), solving crimes via Matlock & Murder She Wrote, eating too many fried pickles, and getting lost in new cities."Follow on Instagram or Facebook!Check out Music Therapy Ebooks!See Rachels post on ASHA regarding co-treatment between speech language pathology and music therapy!Download your free ebook... about writing an ebook!
