Welcome! Our Halloween Series continues with Over the Garden Wall. I had never seen it, and knew nothing about it. That makes this episode a pleasant surprise.

Patrick McHale's animated gem is a Halloween cult classic. It's whimsical, eccentric, and endearingly funny. Plus, it's not terribly scary--call it a soft PG. That means kids as young as 8ish could enjoy it as well.

Hopefully you'll check it out before Halloween, before it goes away on Hulu!

Hey! Our Sweaty Series continues with an all-time classic: Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men. It's a classic legal drama and an intense character study. Lumet's minimal approach to the material is ground-breaking.

And it's one of the sweatiest movies you'll ever see. As the jury deliberates a murder trial in a room with no AC, the pit stains grow larger as the movie progresses. Next week, another film by Lumet, and it's possibly even sweatier!

Enjoy!

Is A Hard Day's Night the Greatest Musical Ever | Review

Cinemavino — Wed, 11 Jun 2025 16:56:00 +0000

Welcome! This episode kicks off our Beatles series, and we begin with their first film--A Hard Day's Night. Roger Ebert famously said the Beatles had four seasons, and this film perfectly captures them in spring. They loved making music. Their brotherhood was still strong. Mega-fame hadn't exhausted them yet. For this brief moment, it felt like Beatlemania could last forever.

We have differing opinions of this movie, so you'll have to see which side you fall on. Next week, get ready for the Beatles in summer, with Help!

How does it hold up? (Spoiler alert: All 4 of us gave it the exact same rating!)

To pair with this new classic, we enjoy a little Spanish Cava!

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a Sentimental Favorite | Review

Cinemavino — Wed, 30 Apr 2025 12:54:00 +0000

Welcome! Our Indy series wraps up with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Yes, there are two more after this one, thus making this not a trilogy. But, those last two films are increasingly disappointing, and these first three films feel so neatly contained and are such a product of their time.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've quoted so much of it. It will be joy to show my kids one day. To pair, we enjoy some delicious Italian red wine. Enjoy!

Hello! Our Sci-Fi series will be a little off, as I've got two sick babies at home. I always want to make sure you guys get the best (and best-sounding) version of Cinemavino, so we'll continue with Blade Runner next Wednesday.

In the meantime, I think this is the perfect time to double back to our episode looking at Aliens. This 2021 entry aired during our Halloween series, but it could have fallen under several categories: Sequels, Sci-Fi, Halloween, and All-Time Classics. James Cameron's brawny action-horror flick is one of the best thrillers of the 80s.

Enjoy this look back, and we'll be right back on time next week!

Seasons greetings! We hope y'all are warm and safe, and all ready for the upcoming holidays. Part 3 of our Christmas Series takes us to a sardonic 80s classic--Bill Murray's Scrooged. It's a gnarly, sarcastic update on A Christmas Carol, with Murray perfectly cast in the lead role.

As with many of our other recent choices, this one was a modest hit that's become a cult classic. How does it hold up? Also, Murray was notoriously difficult to work with on this film. How does that affect our opinion of it? We'll also discuss other films in which Murray reportedly made life difficult for cast and crew. Tune in and get all the hot gossip on this week's Cinemavino!

The Long Kiss Goodnight is a Hidden Christmas Classic | Review

Cinemavino — Wed, 04 Dec 2024 20:25:49 +0000

Can you believe it's already December?? Our annual Christmas Series will feature a few unorthodox selections, just to keep things spicy. We'll start things with a 90s cult flick that might have slipped under your radar: The Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.

This spy action-comedy had top level stars, a premium screenwriter (Shane Black, who created the Lethal Weapon series), a veteran director (Renny Harlin, of Die Hard 2 fame), and yet it was a box office disappointment. Why was that? Has it gained a cult following since then? Most importantly: How is it as a Christmas movie?

Find out the answers to all of those and more on this week's CInemavino!
