The biggest question we get from parents is this: Will my insurance cover this scoliosis care, and do you even take insurance? In this episode, Dr. Mandy takes some time to explain why many chiropractors don’t take insurance, and what kind of solutions are available for patients at every price point – including how a scoliosis brace might be covered by your insurance.

Insurance and Scoliosis Care Things to Keep in Mind from this episode:

Your initial investment for a consultation is minimal if your insurance doesn’t cover it.

There could be options to get a brace covered by your insurance plan; however, you must be committed to following the care plan and protocols so that we can use the medical documentation and progress reports from your care plan to appeal for coverage.

Something is always better than nothing. Ask yourself: what are you willing to pay for a better quality of life for your child or yourself?

Ignoring your scoliosis diagnosis? Most of the time people don’t think they are. But here’s what ignoring it looks like: A medical doctor looks at your x-rays and determines that it’s not bad enough for surgery, therefore they determine that nothing else needs to be done. Most medical providers are unaware of the proactive tools available. In this episode, Dr. Mandy shares insight on the long-term consequences of ignoring a mild diagnosis, as well as some options for proactive care.

Options for proactive care include:

A Traction device – this device is similar to a foam yoga block. Patients are usually prescribed this to use at home for a specific amount of time each day. It helps reduce the pressure on the nerves of your spine. When done correctly as prescribed, it can improve correction to the spine.

Bracing – there are many forms of bracing are available. We recommend a 3-D corrective brace. It is different than the ones the medical community is familiar with and provides more accurate correction.

* A Traction device – this device is similar to a foam yoga block. Patients are usually prescribed this to use at home for a specific amount of time each day. It helps reduce the pressure on the nerves of your spine. When done correctly as prescribed, it can improve correction to the spine. * Bracing – there are many forms of bracing are available. We recommend a 3-D corrective brace. It is different than the ones the medical community is familiar with and provides more accurate correction.

Have you been told you don’t need a brace for your scoliosis? That advice might be incorrect! In this episode, Dr. Mandy shares a story of how a teenage patient with scoliosis went from a 19 degree curve to a 10 degree curve with a brace that she was previously told she didn’t need. You’ll also learn why bracing can have positive results for adults.

Benefits of Bracing in adults include things like:

Do you wake up wondering why you can’t feel your hands? Experiencing numbness or tingling in your hands ever day might be a common problem for various reasons, but it is not normal. This is something Dr. Mandy asks her patients frequently. If your answer is, “yes,” then this episode is for you!

Reasons Why You Can’t Feel Your Hands:

What’s going on in your neck affects your hands.

The muscles on the front of your neck or shoulders are so tight they are affecting your hands. (Episode 23 is another great resource to listen to about this!)

When your nerves aren’t firing correctly, your hands can become numb and tingly from your hands falling asleep or you might lose strength and drop things.

What to do about it:

If you wake up and can’t feel your hands on a consistent basis, get it checked. Have your neck checked by your chiropractor. Letting it go unchecked for years could result in degeneration and other problems.

Have you ever wondered to yourself, “Why can’t I poop?” While this might seem like a silly, gross topic to talk about on a podcast, it’s definitely an important one to address! Dr. Mandy gets this question a lot as she works with her scoliosis patients. In this episode, she shares some insight on how scoliosis and spinal issues might be contributing to digestive issues.

Things to know on the topic of “why can’t I poop?”:

If you have a curve in your low back – and your spine is not in the position it should be in – that will affect your ability to poop. Structurally it changes where your organs are positioned and the messages from your nervous system to your brain won’t function optionally.

Chiropractic adjustments always have a huge impact on your ability to poop. If the nervous system is calm, and the nerves are firing well, your body will work better.

Food allergies and other digestive diseases will add to the issues. Always check with your provider before making changes to their recommendations.

Being in a high stress state will affect your body’s ability to function correctly.

Babies that haven’t pooped for a day or more might need a chiropractic adjustment to help release the stress on the nervous system.

What to do if you can’t poop:

If you notice digestive issues, get your nervous system and spine checked as soon as possible. Call your chiropractor today for an adjustment and be sure to monitor your care frequently to resolve the issue!

In this episode, Dr. Mandy gives advice and things to consider if you’ve ever wondered this yourself.

Why do you get a hump on your back?

A hump on your back often happens because something has happened in your body that makes the curve in your neck not what it is supposed to be. It happens over years, not months. When you have something going on in your neck, it can affect your entire body.

What to do if you notice a hump on your back:

Get it checked out as soon as possible.

Without a checkup, you risk long-term degeneration of your neck and spine.

A hump on your back often happens because something has happened in your body that makes the curve in your neck not what it is supposed to be. It happens over years, not months. When you have something going on in your neck, it can affect your entire body.

What to do if you notice a hump on your back:

* Get it checked out as soon as possible. * Without a checkup, you risk long-term degeneration of your neck and spine.

A common phrase we hear in the chiropractic world is this: “Oh, I’ve just got bad posture.” But here’s the thing: We all have scenarios that we can relate to where we aren’t sitting with good posture. However, there’s a difference between bad posture from sitting in a cramped spot all day versus daily issues of not being able to sit up or stand up straight because of back pain or muscle pain.

What happens after the brace? This is an important question that pops up when patients are wearing a scoliosis brace. It is usually followed by: How do I even know if I’m done wearing a brace? In this week’s episode, Dr. Mandy answers both of those questions and gives you some next steps to consider.

Dr. Mandy’s professional opinion: If you have a brace that still fits you, wearing it 6-8 hours a day (usually at night) can be helpful management to keep your spine healthy and strong. However, there are many factors to consider. Scroll down to discover some of the considerations you might need to make once you are done wearing your scoliosis brace.

Questions to consider for what happens after the brace:

What’s realistic for your life right now?

Females: Are you two years from your first menstrual cycle?

What’s working well for you right now with your brace?

Are your growth plates closed, or are you still growing?

What’s not working well for you right now with your brace?

Have you grown recently in height or weight?

What are your specific needs due to your scoliosis diagnosis?

Welcome to your ’50s and ’60s! This season of life is commonly known as the Prime-Time Years of life. In this episode, Dr. Mandy shares tips for patients with scoliosis in their Prime-Time years. She also gives encouragement and guidance on how to advocate for new care.

Things to consider in your Prime-Time Years:

Pay attention to the little things that negatively impact your life in big ways, such as: it’s harder to pick up your grand kids, osteoporosis, low back pain, trouble with every day movements.

It is possible that a diagnosis of scoliosis has been missed through the years. If you have never had x-rays done of your spine, consider going to a provider that is willing to give you an x-ray referral and do a follow-up appointment with them.

If the problem or pain goes away, and then comes back a little bit worse and stays longer, that’s a red flag that something significant is going on. Your body is trying to tell you something!

Early intervention is important! Don’t wait another five to ten years before getting help. It is NOT normal to experience scoliosis issues as you age. It might be common, but it is not normal. Working with the right provider is key to giving you a solid quality of life!

Welcome to your ’40s! It’s been said that the ’40s is the best decade; however, with scoliosis you might notice yourself slowing down in new ways. In this episode, Dr. Mandy addresses what to watch for and what to do with scoliosis in your ’40s, and also shares things to consider when it comes to adult bracing options.

Things to consider with scoliosis in your ’40s:

Scoliosis will progressively get worse in the adult years. If you haven’t had your scoliosis rechecked, your ’40s is definitely the time to do so. If your last scoliosis x-rays are 10-20 years old, it’s time to update them! Get an updated, thorough assessment with new x-rays so you know exactly what’s happening with your scoliosis.

Pay attention to the early warning signs of small aches and pains and let your provider know.

When getting an updated prognosis, you are looking for two things: 1) a baseline of where you’re at now; and 2) options for continued care.

Options available for help with scoliosis in your ’40s:

Traction for scoliosis curves – this option is easy to use but must be prescribed by someone trained to use it. This helps prevent further spine curvature.

Regular adjustments – this option will help your spine move and function better.

Adult Bracing – the objective of an adult brace is different than for kids. Often the recommendation for adults is to wear it 6-8 hours a day. Check with your provider if this option is for you and follow the recommended wear times.

The most important thing for every adult with scoliosis in their ’40s to remember is that you’re never too old to get help. There are so many solutions still available to you!

* Scoliosis will progressively get worse in the adult years. * Pay attention to the early warning signs of small aches and pains and let your provider know. * When getting an updated prognosis, you are looking for two things: 1) a baseline of where you’re at now; and 2) options for continued care.

Options available for help with scoliosis in your ’40s:

* Traction for scoliosis curves – this option is easy to use but must be prescribed by someone trained to use it. This helps prevent further spine curvature.* Regular adjustments – this option will help your spine move and function better.* Adult Bracing – the objective of an adult brace is different than for kids. Often the recommendation for adults is to wear it 6-8 hours a day. Check with your provider if this option is for you and follow the recommended wear times.

The most important thing for every adult with scoliosis in their ’40s to remember is that you’re never too old to get help. There are so many solutions still available to you!

Your ’30s are the time of life when you are settling into your career, your family life, and just settling into a new groove of adulthood. The ’30s is also when physical issues with scoliosis start to creep up on us. In this episode, Dr. Mandy addresses what to watch for and what to do with scoliosis in your ’30s.

Things to consider with scoliosis in your ’30s:

Always consider your health history.

Pay attention to if scoliosis bothers you during winter months while skiing but not during summer months.

There is adult bracing available. It will provide correction to your spine while wearing it. It can help with postural changes, less pressure on the nerve, etc. Adults typically do not have to wear the brace 24/7. (Always ask your provider and follow recommendations.)

What women with scoliosis in their ’30s should watch for:

Women might notice that they have had zero scoliosis issues until they get pregnant. This is due to hormone changes in your body. Pay attention to what is happening in your body if you are pregnant and have scoliosis in your ’30s. Signs your body needs extra support include: pain, hard to move, feeling unstable on your legs – these are all signs that your spine is not handling the changes well.

The key is for women to handle their scoliosis treatment proactively BEFORE pregnancy, and BEFORE you start to notice pain in general, etc. The earlier you start – and maintain – a solid scoliosis care plan in your ’30s, the better.

Postpartum healing can be different with scoliosis, as well. Women with scoliosis can really benefit from consistent scoliosis care while their body is healing after pregnancy.

What men with scoliosis in their ’30s should watch for:

Men might notice that the things they did in their ’20s – such as working, traveling, sports – is catching up with them. They might notice that it takes them longer to heal and feel better after sports or long travels.

Men with scoliosis in their ’30s can take better care of their bodies by getting enough sleep, good nutrition, consistent adjustments, and updated x-rays.

The most important thing for every adult with scoliosis in their ’30s to remember is that you’re never too old to get help. There are so many solutions still available to you!

Transitioning into adulthood with scoliosis can be challenging. In this episode, Dr. Mandy shares some insight on conversations she has had with her college age patients, and the advice she has shared with them to help them better adjust to adulting with scoliosis during the college years. You’ll also hear a heart-to-heart message from Dr. Mandy to help set college students up for long term success with their health and wellness when it comes to navigating life with scoliosis.

Always remember: the advice on this podcast is for educational purposes only – check with your care provider before making any changes to your current care plan.

Tips for adulting with scoliosis during the college years:

The recommendations for adults with a brace change from full time wear in your high school years to 6-8 hours of wear in the college years. If your brace still fits, talk to your care provider about continuing to wear it part-time.

You will need to find new care providers in your new community for college. Talk to your care provider to find out who they can refer you to for chiropractic care, massage therapy, and any other care providers you need to connect with.

Communicate your expectations clearly to your new care providers and be sure to include past care routines.

Choosing a pro-active care plan of regular chiropractic care helps keep your bio-mechanics as normal as possible. This means it can help your spine have better movement, help your discs stay healthy, and have a better overall quality of life.

Questions to ask a new chiropractor:

Dr. Mandy recommends asking the following questions when interviewing a new chiropractor to find out if they are a good fit for your care needs. These questions are great to ask massage therapists and physical therapists, too.

What is your policy for new patients?

What is your philosophy on care for your patients?

Would you be willing to connect with my current provider for a general patient overview phone call?

This week on the podcast, we are talking to fellow providers again. Specifically, the chiropractors. Tune in as Dr. Mandy shares some quick scoliosis tips for chiropractors.

Tips for Chiropractors

This week on the podcast, we are talking to fellow providers. Specifically, the massage therapists. Tune in as Dr. Mandy shares some quick scoliosis tips for massage therapists.

Tips for Massage Therapists:

* Notice how your patients bend over to pick up their clothes, or how they sit in your waiting area. * Where your patients carry their handbag can also be an indicator of scoliosis – does the strap slip off the shoulder or does it stay in place?

These seemingly unimportant details can make a huge difference in whether or not scoliosis is discovered and managed well.

It really does take a team of providers to help our scoliosis patients effectively! We would love to network with you to provide specialized care for your patients, as well. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

This week on the podcast, we are talking to fellow providers. Specifically, the physical therapists. Tune in as Dr. Mandy shares some quick scoliosis tips for physical therapists.

Tips for Physical Therapists:

* Scoliosis might show up as a muscle imbalance in your patients. Pay attention to changes in the scapula or how the muscles in the spine work. The slightest change in the spine could be a sign of scoliosis.* Pay attention to your patient’s family history and personal health history.* X-rays are more important than you might think! Posture alone is not a great determination of scoliosis. The posture doesn’t always match the x-ray.* Patient positioning matters. Scoliosis won’t always be visible if your patient is laying flat on a table. When your patient lies down, the body self-corrects. So look at them while they are standing or sitting and specifically pay attention to their lumbar spine. * Anytime there is a postural or structural concern, there should be an x-ray. The risk of an x-ray is low compared to the risk of a missed diagnosis. * Whenever there is a question or something seems off, get it checked. Early intervention is important!* Help your patients by doing the following: Get x-rays done. Refer them to a specialist (like us) to help manage scoliosis and help assess when surgery might be necessary. Traction protocols and chiropractic adjustments can be used; however, bracing might be necessary too.

It really does take a team of providers to help our scoliosis patients effectively! We would love to network with you to provide specialized care for your patients, as well. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

When kids have a brace for scoliosis, school can be challenging. We’ve noticed a theme of questions coming through our office since school started and we want to help you with this. Today, Dr. Mandy shares some tips to help you have an easier transition back to school with a scoliosis brace.

Back to school tips for a scoliosis brace:

* A scoliosis brace will not fit in a school locker. You will need to store it somewhere safe if you take it off. Communicate this need with a school admin, teacher, or counselor so you have support and a safe place to store your brace during off times.* Transition times at school can be some of the most challenging. Consider what parts of your day seem to be the hardest for you with your brace, and talk to your parents and school support team for help with solutions.* Brace shirts are not always cute, but there are some better options available online! Contact our office to get our latest suggestions on more clothing to wear with your brace.

A question we often get asked in our clinic is: Do I have to quit playing sports now that I have scoliosis? Dr. Mandy knows how important sports can be to her patients. That’s why today she dives into the topic of sports & scoliosis with 3 things to consider. The more you know about scoliosis, the better decisions you can make! So let’s dive in…

3 Things to Consider when it comes to sports & scoliosis:

* Pain while playing sports means you need to have more support and/or modifications to the sport you are playing. If pain shows up, talk to your provider and ask for modifications to help you continue the sport or extracurricular activity. * Watch for increased stress on the spine, and avoid loading the spine with weight. For example: playing drums in band can actually cause increased stress on the spine. * Eliminate anything that increases rotational and spinal stress. This is especially important for pre-surgical curves. Cheer, gymnastics, and dance are examples of sports that could increase spinal stress for scoliosis.

“Is a sports physical enough to find and diagnose scoliosis?” This question pops up a lot in our world. A sports physical typically takes 30 minutes and is focused on measuring important vital signs to assess whether it is safe to start a new sport or a new sports season. Checking for scoliosis is not always at the top of the list, therefore a scoliosis diagnosis might be missed during the exam. Or it might be found, but be given the “wait and see” suggestion if the physician is not specialized in it. Today Dr. Mandy shares some important information that parents need to know about a sports physical and scoliosis.

Gaps in the sports physical process:

* Not all kids play sports, so they don’t get a sports physical. Scoliosis can be missed simply from not having any doctor appointments.* Parents assume the sports physical will catch scoliosis, but it doesn’t. And then a diagnosis gets missed.

What can you do?

* Kids ages 10-14 should be checked ever year for scoliosis. If a sports physical is already scheduled, specifically ask your provider to check their spine for scoliosis or request a referral to a specialist if needed. * If you have been told there is a curve in your child’s spine, get an x-ray so you know exactly what kind of scoliosis you are dealing with.

You’re at an appointment with your child and the provider says, “Oh, she has a curve in her spine!” So you ask them what you should do, and they reply, “We’ll just watch it and see what happens.” Enter: the wait and see mentality in scoliosis treatment. No assessment is done and you follow that approach of “wait and see.” Sometimes this turns out okay and other times… this approach has irreversible results. In today’s episode, Dr. Mandy shares some things to consider when confronted with the wait and see mentality approach in scoliosis treatment.

Be proactive if you hear the words “wait and see!”

* Your specific circumstance is unique to you, so getting ahead of the curve progression is important.* Time is not always on your side. “Wait and see” is not a proactive option.* Ask for x-rays and a full assessment to know what is actually going on with scoliosis. * Get a second opinion from another specialist to be sure you know all of the options available to you.

Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Naturopathic Doctors are valuable providers to partner with when managing scoliosis. In this episode, Dr. Mandy speaks to each of these professionals to help educate them on what to look for and how to help their scoliosis patients. She shares things she wished she would have known in the early years of her chiropractic clinic. Listen in to this episode to discover what providers need to know about scoliosis. Be sure to print out the show notes if you are one of the providers mentioned!

What Chiropractic Providers Need to Know about Scoliosis:

* Pay attention to your patient’s family history and personal health history.* X-rays are more important than you might think!

The above tips are what chiropractic providers need to know about scoliosis. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

Tips for Physical Therapists:

* Scoliosis might show up as a muscle imbalance in your patients. Pay attention to changes in the scapula or how the muscles in the spine work. The slightest change in the spine could be a sign of scoliosis.* All of the tips shared above for chiropractors apply to PTs as well. It’s always best to have an x-ray because it will show us what’s really going on.

The above tips are what physical therapist providers need to know about scoliosis. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

Tips for Massage Therapists:

* Pay attention to when your patient sits on your table. Watch how they bend over to pick up their clothes, or how they sit in your waiting area. Where they carry their handbag can also be an indicator of scoliosis – does the strap slip off the shoulder or does it stay in place? These seemingly unimportant details can make a huge difference in whether or not scoliosis is discovered and managed well.

The above tips are what massage therapist providers need to know about scoliosis. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

Tips for Naturopathic Doctors:

The red flags of scoliosis can be easily missed if you don’t know what to look for. As a parent, and a scoliosis chiropractor, I will tell you to pay attention to your intuition – it is always right. In this week’s episode, you’ll discover what you need to be aware of to make sure scoliosis is managed well. You’ll also learn who should get checked for scoliosis and when.

3 Red Flags of Scoliosis:

* You or your child have never had a spinal check done. Schools used to do complimentary scoliosis checks, but unfortunately they no longer do this. Complimentary spinal checks can be done with your scoliosis chiropractor. Just be sure that you have your scoliosis check done by someone who knows what to look for.* You’ve been told that you, or your child, have a curve in your spine but no x-rays have been done. This happens a lot. In fact, for patients that are in dance or pageants, they might hear during their dress alteration fitting that one side of their hip is higher or there is something wrong with their posture. This is a red flag that needs to be checked and x-rays are the only way to get an accurate view of what is actually going on with the spine. If you’ve ever been told that you or your child have a curve in your spine – you need to have a very specific kind of x-ray done! Check with your scoliosis provider for an accurate x-ray referral. * You or your child have had x-rays but your provider has not had a conversation with you about the results or shown them to you. In order to get the best care, you need to make sure you have all of the information. Ask to see your x-rays and have that conversation with your provider. And if your provider isn’t having those conversations with you, reach out to a specialist for a second opinion. You can contact our office for an in-person or virtual consult.

Get connected:

* For Families – early detection of scoliosis is key. Many families learn about solutions when it is too late for them to be effective. Connect with us to find out how we can help you. Even if you live outside of the area, we can help you find providers in your area that can help.* For Providers – we would love to network with you to provide specialized care for your patients, as well. Connect with us to learn how we can partner together to offer solutions to your patients.

When scoliosis hits close to home, it changes your life. We learn things about scoliosis in Chiropractic school, but when you become a parent of a child with scoliosis, you start to have a ton of questions that school didn’t answer. It was never my plan to specialize in scoliosis as a Chiropractor; however, over the years, people showed up at my clinic needing my help. Because of my experience as a scoliosis parent, I’ve been able to help patients that fall in between the spectrum of care. This is my story…

Next steps for when Scoliosis hits close to home for you:

My hope with this show is to get the word out, and share resources that can help. This is not something that is commonly taught in medical school or chiropractic school. Below are a few action steps to take so you can be well equipped when scoliosis hits close to home for you.
