Welcome
Yeah, we are a little late getting this one out. We will work on getting better at that.
APOLOGY: My apology to Jason Garver of the Moonshine Lunch Run. In the intro of the show I mistakenly pronounced his last name as Graver. It is indeed Garver and I apologize for my error.

Recalls
Good News! No motorcycle recalls during this period.

Moonshine Lunch Run
Do you need an excuse to ride? Some people live by the moniker, "Ride to Eat, Eat to Ride". But how far would you ride to get a burger known as the Moonburger and have the opportunity to sit around and talk long distance motorcycle riding with those who have the same passion? Today we interview Jason Garver of the Moonshine Lunch Run. A quick heads up! Jason graciously did the interview after a long day at work while enjoying the evening with his family. He gave me fair warning the kids were there and it might get noisy. As you can expect, it did in some areas of the interview but does not take away from the content. If you are wearing earbuds you have been warned. LOL

Besides your normal every day looking rides you will see many like this Super Tenere set up for the long haul. Just check out the backup navigation devices, the multitude of driving lights on the front, and the auxiliary fuel tank mounted to the tail plate. I wanted to talk with the owner but had no idea who he was. I am sure that that motorcycle could tell some stories.

At some point on the day of the ride Jason used a drone to film over the immediate area. If you watch the video you will see breaks in the lines of motorcycles lining the roads which tells me he did this later in the morning. At my arrival there were no breaks in the lines and there were continuous arrivals the entire time of my stay. Check out the video here.

While planning your 2015 rides make Moonshine a must visit. Terry Hammond had a dream and he is no doubt looking down over the MLR with a big smile. In Terry's words,
"If you don't make it to Moonshine, you ain't a Motorcycle Rider, you're just a Motorcycle Owner!!!" Here is my obligatory pic out in front of the Moonshine to show I am a rider not just an owner!

For more information on the Moonshine Lunch Run follow this link to their website and we hope to see you there next year.

Welcome
Hello once again. Right on the heels of the Sam Manicom interview I am sitting in Carrollton, GA for my daughter's softball tournament. Hotel is disgusting, wifi is almost non existent, but life is good. Sitting here at Starbucks bumming their free wifi so I can get the podcast out to you. I am not going to profess that this is my best episode to date for sure. I have the wife, daughter, and granddaughter sitting with me so many distractions. I think you will hear it as my thoughts might seem broken at times but I felt it was better than not putting out an episode. No matter how bad the episode it covers a very important topic.

Hello! Seems like forever since we were here doing the same thing. The difference between then and now is that we have our first interview to offer up to you and we came out of the gate running! I am excited bring the show to you and hope you will share it with others who are interested in world travel by motorcycle.

Recalls
I mention in the podcast that there are no recalls to discuss this episode but I have to elaborate a little. I get recall information directly from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration via an RSS feed and I have not been informed of any motorcycle recalls. While looking through the internet today I found that Yamaha did have a recall that posted February 10th on the NHTSA site. The recall involves YZFR1 and XTC12 Super Tenere motorcycles. You can get the affected model years and the cause of the recall by following clicking here.

We Care About You
Remember in episode 4 I discussed distracted driving and so called safe driving? Well, it seems that the good old US is not the only country that is worried about us. From Russia comes a new motorcycle that uses radar to decide when you are not reacting to a hazard in front of you and will actually apply the brakes for you. I talk about it in the opening of the show and you can read more detail from our friends at Visordown by following this link.

Sam Manicom
Sam Manicom is a renowned world traveler and author. He has four books out currently that make up the Adventure Series. The graphic at the top of this post shows Sam and the available books. I recently finished "Into Africa" and I have started "Under Asian Skies". The books are amazing and leave you feeling that you are riding along side Sam, living the same adventure and seeing the same sights. You can purchase Sam's books on his website or at the Book Depository. If purchasing from the Book Depository I have provided the link to each book below that will take you directly to their site.

Into Africa
Under Asian Skies
Distant Suns
Tortillas to Totems

You can follow Sam on Facebook and Twitter

Come back in two weeks and listen to part two of the interview. You can follow us on Twitter as well by following this link. Share with your friends and leave us some comments below. And, rate us at your favorite place to get your podcast downloads whether it is iTunes, Stitcher, Miro, or any other. Have a great couple of weeks and stay safe!

Glad you are back once again and we have a quick show for you this week. Prep time was at a minimum as my father passed away yesterday, Saturday, after a four week hospital stay. Rest In Peace Dave McQueen.

Recalls

Good news! No motorcycle recalls this week. The manufacturers have to be loving that.

Sam Manicom

We will be recording with Sam this week and you will hear that discussion on Episode 05 that will hopefully release on March 9th. Let all your adventure riding friends know that a true world traveler will be joining us for some teaching and some fun!

Distracted vs. Smart Driving

I read a couple of disturbing articles this week, one from the UK and one from the US, that affect our safety. I give my opinion on what was contained in those articles. You can read a little further into them at the links here.

UK article on distracted driving.

US article on smart driving (my moniker).

Feedback

Send us your thoughts on the show or just contact us to say Hi!
Comments can be left in the comments section at the end of these show notes.

Welcome to Episode 3!!

Thank you all for listening and reading the shown notes here on the blog.

This episode I explain that random download that you received a few days prior to the release of this episode. My apologies for that.

Cold Remains in the Midwest
We begin by talking about the cold weather that has kept us here in the Midwest confined to four wheel vehicles. Negative wind chills and lots of snow!!

Recall
Our recall this week is from Triumph and does involve a couple adventure models of the brand. Click here to read the recall on the NHTSA website.

2013 Motorcycle Sales
Next I discuss the motorcycle sales figures for 2013, mostly as they pertain to the adventure motorcycle segment. Hear about a prediction I made in 2008 along with some friends that proved to be way off base.

Gear Review
I give my thoughts on my riding pants, Tourmaster Venture Air. I also ask you for your suggestions on buying proper adventure / dual sport specific riding gear. These are great pants but not for off road in my opinion.

Breaking News
We have been successful in securing a couple of the interviews I promised you all. Over the next three to four weeks, working around their schedules, I will be interviewing two gentlemen surely to make you want to listen in. I do not know who will be on first. The deciding factor will be their schedules. One is a world traveler and author. You all know him as Sam Manicom! The other will be an excellent source for those of you, like me, that are new to the sport. Shawn Thomas, instructor for RawHyde Adventures will join us.

I invite you to send me questions that you would like me to ask either of these gentlemen during our interview. Feel free to email me your questions at Steve@adventuremotorider.com or you can leave a voicemail via your computer by clicking on the "Send Voicemail" button on the right side of the screen you are looking at. This does require a microphone on your computer to be used. Get them in fast so I have them prior to recording.

If you would like more information on what either man does feel free to check out the website for each by clicking their name below.

Shawn Thomas - RawHyde Adventures

Don't forget to send all your friends here and have them follow us on twitter: @advmotopodcast

Check us out in two weeks!!!

If you are a motorcyclist in Indiana, have visited the ABATE of Indiana bash called the Boogie, attended the ABATE of Kansas annual party, or spent time in South Dakota or Wyoming around the Sturgis Rally you know the name Big Mike and you know the Eclipse Band. Big Mike was a great vocalist and even more accomplished guitarist. I was always in awe of the man and how he made a Les Paul sing even with those big, bear sized hands and fingers of his.

For those who were fortunate enough to know him outside of his music, you were truly blessed. What you got was a man who loved his family and his music. He enjoyed many things like hunting and fishing but my perception was that he was happiest putting smiles on people's faces with his music. He never failed at that.

I find it ironic that Mike was taken from this earth by a heart attack since this man was all heart. He was always doing for others and just last September he, through Eclipse Entertainment, partnered with our fund, the lovingBri Fund, to help us raise money to cure childhood cancer. He only asked for a small donation to help cover costs and pay his helpers and agreed to come out and do it all again in 2014. But, the next ride he said he would do for free. Mike and friends also worked on projects that were dear to his and brother Donnie's hearts to help feed Veterans in need among other things. That was Mike. He loved his wife. He loved his family. He loved his band. And, he loved making you and me smile through music.

If a heart attack is caused by so much giving, so much sharing of love that your heart just stops from exhaustion then that is what took my friend. He gave it all.

There is a song by the Eclipse band that fits this situation so well and honors the life of Big Mike Donaldson. I have included it above. Mike Donaldson is one of the good ones and he will be greatly missed. Enjoy that golden Les Paul for me Mike and hold my baby girl on your lap and hug her from her Daddy.

As I sit here and write show notes preparing to record the podcast I look out the window and see that we got about four new inches of snow overnight. It has been a banner year for snow lately here in Central Indiana. No motorcycle riding for this region!

Recalls:

BMW announced a major recall in mid December involving many bikes. Read more here.

For you electric afficionados, looks like Zero is having an electrical problem of all things. Well, I guess that is one of the only things that can go wrong on an electric motorcycle. Find out what is up here.

Dakar

2014 was an exciting race in the motorcycle division. The top names were once again battling towards the top as Spaniard Marc Coma brought home the win on a KTM. Cyril Despres (France), despite one hour and five minutes of penalty, finished third in an amazing ride. If the penalty had not have happened Despres would have finished in second place ahead of Spaniard Viladoms with a forty-seven minute lead. Spain and France end the 2014 Dakar with three riders each in the top ten finishers. KTM dominated the top 10 with five motorcycles, two of which were on the podium, while three Hondas and two Yamahas completed your top 10. One of the Yamahas, that of Cyril Despres, completed the podium.

Kevin Ash

We are at the one year anniversary of the tragic death of Kevin Ash, British motojournalist killed while test riding the 2013 BMW 1200 GS during a press launch in South Africa.

Gear Review

Since the weather here has been brutally cold I have decided to do some reviews on gear that I have found to work amazingly well in cold weather. Over the next month or so we will do gear reviews while we set up future interviews with globetrotters and those who make all the fun farkles for us. This episode I cover the Comfort In Action ST Balaclava, a must have piece of gear if you will ride in cold weather situations. I have had mine for a few years now and it looks like they may not be in production any longer although I have found them in stock at limited sites and limited quantiities available. Here are links to two. An alteranative to this balaclava that looks to be just as well constructed and priced very competitively is the Klim balaclava.

I mentioned in the audio that I frequent a few websites and use the name Harleymac1 as my username. Feel free to hit me up when you are there and share your ideas for fave rides or products to cover. You can find me at Stromtrooper, advrider, and VSARI. I look forward to learning more about adventure riding through all of you and maybe through interviews you will all learn as well.

While waiting for iTunes to validate the feed so this can be listened to other places besides on the website only I have started a Twitter page. If you are a tweeter please follow us at @advmotopodcast
