Keep the Main Thing Podcast is a collection of sermons and messages from Pastor Lee Evenson. Leland Evenson was an Ordained Lutheran Minister. It is estimated that over his 60+ years in active ministry, Pastor Lee as he was referred to, delivered over 5000 sermons, and presided over a thousand weddings and funerals. We have been able to obtain just a fraction of those messages, primarily from the late 80’s and early 90’s, and wanted to share them with his past congregations and new followers as well. We know there are a number of people excited to hear some of Pastor’s old messages and we are delighted we can do that.We look forward to sharing with you these still timely and impactful messages from Pastor Lee. We hope that hearing them again will bring back memories, inspire you, and continue to build up your faith.

Pastor Lee opens with a remarkable story about an expectant mother who had to have complete bed rest for the last 10 weeks of her pregnancy. What Pastor Lee marveled at, was she also had complete God rest. Pastor Lee tells us that if we know Jesus, we have His life within us. And in order to carry that life and for that life to come forth in us, we need to learn what this woman had learned. We need complete God rest. Pastor Lee uses three words to outline change: the Position, the Prescription, and the Person.

In this message he uses the letter R from the word prayer to teach us, that R can stand for Relationships. Emphasizing that is where the power lies. Prayer isn’t a puzzle to solve. It’s not a transaction or a technique. It’s a relationship—communion with a Father who knows us, hears us, and cares about every part of our lives. That is where the power is.

In that story there is a single line that captures what Pastor Lee sees as the tragedy of the church. We’re afraid to follow the Lion of Judah into the future. Instead, we want to go back to see where He’s been. We have turned our churches into museums. We see God’s faithfulness only in history. On this Reformation Sunday, Pastor Lee calls us back to the basics, giving us the three essentials that Luther discovered, and that the church desperately needs today.

Pastor Lee opens with a personal story about leaving family after a visit. Having to be physically separated from those he loved so deeply was painful. Pastor Lee makes the observation: we’re not wired to be detached from the people we love. And that’s how God designed us to relate to Him. He wants us abiding in Him—constantly connected, deeply rooted, living in His presence moment by moment. Working from John 15:1-8, Pastor Lee shows us the image Jesus used. I am the vine and you are the branches.

The first Sunday after Easter, 1991. A sermon from Pastor Leland Evenson is titled “Wind at Your Back.” Pastor Lee addresses something many of us have experienced: the letdown that comes after a big event or an emotional high. Pastor Lee brings us into that room where the disciples were deflated days after the resurrection. Wonder and doubt mixed together. Was it really true? What happens now? Where do we go from here? The wind was completely knocked out of their sails. Then Jesus came to them. Stepping right through the locked doors of that room where they huddled in fear. His presence, put the wind back in their sails. But how do we experience that wind in our backs today? Pastor Lee gives us three essential words to help us get the wind back in our sails.

Pastor Lee preaches from John 12:22-28, and he opens with a statement we’ve all heard. “I’m worth more dead than I am alive.” Pastor Lee does something striking: he agrees with that statement. But he takes it deeper. He suggests that Jesus Himself struggled with this reality—knowing that in some sense, He was worth more to us dead than alive. The reality of His upcoming crucifixion on our behalf. It wasn’t something He welcomed; it was something He wrestled with. Pastor Lee central question of this message—really, the central question of the Christian life: What is the purpose of your life? What are you dying for? What are you living for?

The message from Pastor Lee is titled “What Makes You Mad.” Pastor Lee opens his sermon by reminding us something important: it’s not really worth getting angry over something small—like a penny, as he illustrates. God designed us with the emotion of anger. The issue is how we use it. Pastor Lee reminds us that anger can be reflective and positive, or it can be purely reactionary and destructive. The difference matters enormously. He draws from the Gospel lesson for that Sunday, which describes Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem—overturning tables, driving out the money changers. It’s one of the few times we see Jesus visibly angry. And Pastor Lee uses this scene to explore what righteous anger looks like.

Pastor Lee helps us understand that everything already belongs to God. Everything we possess is part of His gift to us. Giving is the natural way for us to live. In a vulnerable and personal testimony, Pastor Lee shares his own journey of being baptized in the Holy Spirit and how it transformed his life. The challenges they faced, the cultural struggles they wrestled with—they remarkably parallel to what we’re dealing with in the twenty-first century. The perpetual predicaments of life remain the same, whether it’s 1976, 1990, or 2026. But so do the answers to life’s struggles and our hope for the future. It’s found in having a relationship and faith in Jesus Christ.

Pastor Lee opens his message with a fascinating and bizarre story—the story of a house built entirely out of spite. A man, consumed by anger toward his neighbors, constructed a ridiculous, impractical house for one reason only: revenge. It became known as “the spite house.” Pastor Lee suggests that we all visit—or even live in—our own “house of spite” from time to time. Pastor Lee also tells us that the worst hangover in life is the hangover of unforgiveness. You’ll have to listen to see how we move out of the “spite house”, and get rid of those nasty hangovers.

Pastor Lee is preaching from Romans chapter 12. Pastor Lee reminds us that through God’s grace, we’re not only brought back to God—we’re also brought back together as Christians, developing what he calls a “healthy interdependence.” Christians need each other—each bringing unique gifts that strengthen the entire body of Christ. It’s the way God designed us in what Pastor Lee calls “the great gift exchange.”

This blind spot can cause us to miss out on much of life because we invest our time and resources in the wrong places. Pastor Lee tells us that in our culture, we’ve changed the price tags on things—assigning high value to what ultimately holds very little, and overlooking what matters most. Pastor Lee encourages us by reminding us that this 100% investment in God’s Kingdom will yield returns even today—but more importantly, it’s a long-term investment with amazing value throughout eternity.

Pastor Lee makes an observation, that in life, there are side effects—and most of them we’d rather avoid. He draws a clever parallel to those moments when a doctor prescribes medication and then warns us about potential side effects. We weigh the risks against the benefits and decide if it’s worth it. But Pastor Lee takes this everyday experience and applies it to something far more significant: what happens when we become Christians? What are the side effects of following Jesus?

The title of Pastor Lee’s sermon carries a question we’ve all heard, and probably all said: “What am I going to do with you?” As Pastor Lee points out, this familiar line usually comes from a place of frustration, exhausted patience, or even anger. But he asks us to hear it differently—to consider it as something deeper, more hopeful, and genuinely thought-provoking. This is an emotional message. Pastor Lee draws from his own experience with his father, his role model for laying the right foundation. And he asks all of us a penetrating question: Are we living out the kind of faith our children could bank their lives on? The kind of faith they could build upon, trust in, and pass down?

Pastor Lee reminds us of something vital: while God is always moving toward us, we can’t simply wait passively. We need to actively move toward Him. Drawing from Luke 24 and the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, Pastor Lee reminds us that we seldom do anything well if our hearts aren't in it. He speaks to those who are downhearted, slow of heart to believe, or struggling with doubt. Pastor Lee encourages us not to lose heart, but to experience the burning heart that comes from encountering the risen Christ and the glad heart that flows from feeling God's unfailing love. The pursuit of fun is what it is all about. With all this time off from work and responsibilities and the means to afford much, we are constantly looking for new avenues of fun and ways for us to be entertained. Pastor Lee uses the example of what would happen if you drilled a hole in a record album that was off-centre. It was first presented on January 28, 1990. Pastor Lee invites us to lean into the emotions we might have from the times in our lives when we were overlooked by this world. He then reminds us that the standards the world sets are not necessarily God’s preferences for partnering with His people. This is a truly inspirational message for us all.
Today’s podcast is part two of a three-part series Pastor Lee presented in January 1990. It is titled “United We Stand”. Pastor Lee based this series of sermons on Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church. Pastor Lee, using 1 Corinthians and other examples from the New Testament, shares that even the early church and its leaders faced conflicts. This sermon openly discusses a conflict that was going on in Pastor Lee’s own parish. You will be touched by Pastor Lee’s genuine humility as he is the first to offer up an appeal for forgiveness from the entire congregation, and particularly those he felt he had wronged and hurt in some way. Pastor Lee set a good example in that the first step towards unity is asking for and accepting forgiveness.

An inspirational message that was part one of a three-part series of sermons, based on I Corinthians. Using Paul’s letter to the Corinthian Church, Pastor Lee reminds us that life gets better with Jesus, but it does not necessarily become easier. He suggests that we focus on living better and not just pursue a better life. Pastor Lee tells us that having Jesus bring true purpose for our lives can be better than just upgrading a standard of living.

On “Christ the King Sunday” on November 26, 1989, Pastor Lee delivered a sermon titled, “Avoiding Customized Religion”. Pastor Lee begins by quoting a columnist from the St. Paul Pioneer Press, who, after the October 1989 earthquake in the Bay Area, wrote in his column that we are not in charge of this world. Believing we are in charge of this planet is more concerning than many other threats or crises we encounter. Pastor Lee suggests that putting ourselves in charge and customizing our religion is not only a bad idea, but also an impossible way to live. The sermon is based on the Epistle lesson from that Sunday, Colossians 1:15-20.

“A Climate of Growing Faith”. October 1, 1989. Pastor Lee takes us into a discussion about faith. Pastor Lee points out that Jesus suggested faith, which can be as small as a mustard seed, is enough to “move mountains”. Pastor Lee brings home that a small faith is a mighty faith. Although a small faith is substantial enough to make a difference in this world, Pastor Lee encourages us to work at increasing our faith to rest more comfortably in it. We need to build up our courage and take risks if we want to walk out our faith every day. He emphasizes that growing our faith is not easy, because it runs counter to our nature and puts us in situations that might be uncomfortable and inconvenient for us. Yet with Christ’s help, the rewards can be tremendous.

This is a great message on what it looks like to give Jesus exclusive rights to our lives, and a few of the fruits of that relationship, that we will enjoy by giving our whole selves to Christ. Pastor Lee tells us by allowing Jesus to have exclusive rights over our lives, He can transform us. In which case we have peace and purpose in our lives. We become more joyful and more useful to Jesus and to those around us.

He asks his audience, are people saying hope for the best with resignation – no anticipation or excitement? Or when you say hope for the best, are you saying it with anticipation. Using passages from Luke 12 and Hebrews 11, Pastor Lee shows us why as God’s children, we really can Hope for the Best.

“Learning a Foreign Language”. It was first given on April 23, 1989. Pastor Lee takes a divisive situation head-on that was going on within his parish. He uses the Bible’s prominent lessons, to Love one another, as his basis for delivering this challenging message to a hurting congregation. Pastor Lee takes an interesting tact in addressing the issue that was causing the conflict. Instead of taking sides or expressing his viewpoint, he urges the congregation to focus their energies on loving each other as Jesus commanded us to do, and let God be the one who takes on the issue at hand. Even though this was a very pointed message, given at a specific point in time, it is a great reminder for us all.

A message from Pastor Leland Evenson given during Advent 1988, Titled, “Signs of Pregnancy”. Using Mother Mary’s, and Pastor Lee’s daughter Shanna’s pregnancy as a backdrop, Pastor Lee asks the question: What are we giving birth to in our lives? He reminds us that spiritually we are all pregnant carrying maybe a sense of joy given to us by our Savior. Or perhaps a spirit of strife or other troubles.

His metaphors and analogies of a woman’s pregnancy and the Christian faith are ingenious and charming. So, think of this as an early warm-up to the forthcoming Christmas season.

Pastor Lee uses Ephesians 6:4 as his basis for this sermon. Pastor Lee asks a very simple, fundamental question, “do you exasperate your children?” Or are you bringing them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord? Pastor Lee explains why those parenting behaviours are so different. And what will be the probable outcome for your children and with your children as they get older.

Podcast 34 is titled “Moving out of Misery”. From the title, you would not think it was a sermon on repentance. However, Pastor Lee makes it clear that if we produce changes in our hearts and mind – which is the definition of repentance – we may be able to rid ourselves of a lot of misery. Pastor Lee uses an interesting juxtaposition of our obsession with changes to our outwardly appearance, to the more vital need to focus on internal transformation. This message from Pastor Lee asks us, are we willing to do the harwork of repentance, to be sanctified in Christ? To gain a more profound relationship with our Creator while also building richer relationships with those around us.

This message from 1988 is as relevant, if not more relevant today, as he speaks to parents and teachers about raising our children. He knew the important role and responsibility that particularly parents had for bringing up children the right way. He gives us practical tools that will help all of us build better relationships with our children. Ways to guide them, lead them; reminding us all along the way that children are watching us more than they tend to listen to us. He passionately drives home his points on raising children with a lot of emotion and strength. His compassion for the next generation comes through loud and clear.

That is the title of today’s sermon from Pastor Evenson. Pastor Lee uses John 6:53-70 and Joshua 23 along with marriage metaphors, to bring home the idea that we face choices every single day. And a wrong choice will usually lead to another wrong choice. Pastor Lee leaves us with a choice, a big question. Which we will all have to answer. But then playing off the old cliché, “who says so?” he reminds us that we have nothing to fear because Jesus says so. Pastor Lee has packed this message with anecdotes and Bible verses that emphasize the important point that Christ is always present, He loves us and is utterly concerned for us. And his absolute Lordship allows us to defeat fear and know He is in control.

In his sermon, Stand Firm, Pastor Lee uses Second Corinthians 1:3-7, 8-11, and verse 18; emphasizing how Paul experienced trouble not as a punishment for something he had done. But for the preparation for something he was going to do. A quote from Pastor Lee, “Whatever is going on in your life right now, whatever has you feeling like there is no hope – no way out – no future. Remember that’s where God wants you. And that we cannot know the meaning of every event, but we can know that every event is meaningful. So, stand firm!”

Using the Epistle lesson from that particular Sunday, Romans 13:1-10, Pastor Lee’s central focus is found in verse 8 where Paul urges the early Christians to “let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love one another.

A Palm Sunday sermon from 1987. Pastor Leland Evenson reminds us that allowing God to lead us and Lord over our lives is the way to a truly joyful and peaceful existence. He tells us that life works best when we are under the right authority, and not rebelling against it. He makes the comment that we were not created to be the king, yet we continue to try to rule our world. And there are many consequences when we strive to be ruler over our life and other lives.

There are many struggles trying to maintain our empire, and sooner or later find out the hard way that we are not in charge. When we allow there to be a regime change and let God be our King, we will experience an adventurous and fulfilling life.

A great message as we mark the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

Pastor Lee effectively again relates experiences from his time at the hospital with his wife, Merriam. Using germs as a metaphor for sin. Discussing how sin causes infection in our lives, as do germs. It is a pointed message that strikes at the heart of all of us. Yet of course he inspires us to remember that God’s grace is sufficient. Imploring us not to take God’s forgiveness for granted. Encouraging us to work at being better followers of Christ.

United We Demonstrate, Divided We Destroy. A Pastor Leland Evenson sermon delivered on January 25, 1987. He based this message on the letter Paul wrote to the Corinthian church – Corinthians 1:10-17. Pastor Lee implores us to set aside our selfishness and egos, which can destroy relationships and people. And look to Jesus who showed us how putting other people first leads to peace and unity. This sermon is a good example of Pastor Lee imploring us to, “keep the main thing, the main thing.” Encouraging us to put aside our selfishness and strive for unity. Unity with one another in Christ.

A sermon that we all need to hear. Rejection is part of everyone’s life. There is no one who is immune from rejection. One only has to read the news, or you can observe it in your own community, that rejection, self-hate, and self-pity are everywhere. Today’s message is based on the gospel lesson from the ninth chapter of the gospel of John.

Take a listen to “From Rejection to Reception”. It is an emotionally packed sermon that helps us remember that having the right perception of Jesus will help us handle rejection. With the right perception, we willingly move towards the loving reception we receive from our father in Heaven. For God is, of course, the right source for finding our true identity, recognizing our absolute genuine worth, and experiencing unconditional love.

An encouraging message for everyone from Pastor Lee Evenson on using our adversities and troubles for God’s purpose in our lives.

That our burdens can be bridges to help others who are going through difficult times. An inspiring talk based on Paul’s second letter to the Corinthian church.

A great reminder that life isn’t always perfect and ideal. That God allows trials to come into our lives not as a punishment but as preparation.

Welcome to another episode of Keep The Main Thing Podcast with Pastor Lee Evenson.

Today’s sermon from Pastor Lee is from December 1986. It is titled “When life turns around”.

It is a noteworthy message on repentance. He makes some great points, using his own experiences.

Pastor Lee starts his talk describing how by nature we are heading the wrong way because we live in a sinful world. He has an interesting comment about the world’s sinful dilemma, “we’re asking the right questions but getting the wrong answers.”

Welcome to another episode of Keep The Main Thing Podcast with Pastor Lee Evenson.

Podcast #3 is entitled “Long Range Planning”. First delivered in November 1986, Pastor Evenson refers to Luke 21 as the text for this particular sermon.

This sermon reminds us that there will be an end to our earthly existence and to the earth itself. He reminds us to look to eternity, to be prepared for persecution as a Christian, and encourages us to persevere.

Some great stories and analogies in this 26 minutes.

Coming March 22 will be the inaugural Podcast of “Keep the Main Thing”, sermons and messages from Pastor Lee Evenson. We know there are a number of people excited to hear some of Pastor’s old messages and we are delighted we can do that.

We are also setting up a website www.keepthemainthing.com. We will post the podcasts and hope the website will also be a place where people can post messages, stories and memories of Pastor Lee, and the impact his ministry had on their lives.

We look forward to sharing with you these still timely and impactful messages from Pastor Lee. We hope that hearing them again will bring back memories, inspire you, and continue to build up your faith.

Episode 2 will be published on 3/27.

Thank you.
